  • RE5 producer: Mature games will sell on Wii , but need an 'X-Factor' (hint: it's 'Resident Evil')

Mature games can sell well on Wii; just ask Resident Evil 5 (and RE: The Darkside Chronicles) producer, Masachika Kawata. Speaking to VideoGamer.com, he acknowledged that it's not easy for adult-oriented titles to break out on the system, but says it's still possible given hard work and an "X-Factor."One of the roadblocks mature games face on Wii is perception, Kawta said. "People get this perception that on Nintendo Wii all there is are cutesy games. However, when you actually try to develop a game on Wii it costs you money, it's time consuming and it's not the easiest console to deal with." So, real games (i.e. ones that aren't cute) are hard to -- wait, did he just say "cutesy" games aren't games? Well, he has been around blood and gore an awful lot lately, but still."There are good [mature] games that didn't sell, obviously," Kawata admitted. "You need an X-Factor." We presume he's talking about the likes of Platinum Games' excellent MadWorld, which we have to admit probably would have sold better with the "X-Factor" that's served Capcom so well on Wii: the words "Resident Evil" in the title.

We thought we would be inundated with questions following E3, but it appears that you guys are still too shell-shocked from the Metroid: Other M trailer to speak. Or from the Wii Vitality Sensor reveal. We don't mind telling you, by the way, that we can't help but be delighted that Nintendo is making something that weird. And if you don't think it's a good idea, don't worry too much about it. It's Nintendo, after all, and the thing will end up being used in one game at most.Anyway, our question this week is about rail shooters. If you have a question for us, send an email to asknintendo AT joystiq DOT com!

For those of you planning to relive the horrors of Claire and Leon's jaunt through Raccoon City in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, know that Capcom has confirmed the game will have a dynamic, sliding scale difficulty, Siliconera reports. Depending on how well you're blasting zombie skulls and putting down lunging dogs, the game will ramp up the difficulty or, should you find yourself nothing more than a walking, talking snack for the many undead frequenting this once sleepy mountain town, the game will ease back and give you a fighting chance.Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles is scheduled for release this winter.%Gallery-47570%

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles trailer blasts through Raccoon City

It's been about a month and a half since we've seen anything on Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, and boy has the wait been worth it. This latest trailer not only shows off several memorable areas in Raccoon City, but it also reveals some of the iconic baddies from the Resident Evil universe making a return, all the while making sure to pour on the buckets of blood. You'd think zombies wouldn't bleed that much, what with coagulation and all. But, then again, you'd think the dead would never walk, either ...So, head past the break to watch the video, and keep your eyes peeled for Ada Wong, who manages to make a brief appearance.%Gallery-47570%

Considering that Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles follows Leon and Claire through their wonderful vacation time in Raccoon City during the zombie outbreak, it's only natural to wonder if supporting characters will also return. While we've been holding out for a Hunk announcement (or, better yet, Tofu!), IGN reports that Ada Wong will make a comeback. Even more surprising is that Ada will not be tied to Leon's exploits this time around, as she was in Resident Evil 2, but will even appear alongside Claire Redfield.Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles is slated for a winter release this year.

  • CAPTIVATE09 takes place in Monte Carlo, new game announcements imminent

In an effort to reach out to its fans in the Western European version of CAPTIVATE08's setting, Capcom announced details (via Capcom-Unity) this week about its "totally not a gamer's day" event, unironically titled CAPTIVATE09. Taking place in Monte Carlo, Monaco, the company says it's announcing "new games" at the event (emphasis on the "s" at the end there) -- an especially interesting statement to make considering Capcom's Chris Kramer said this week on the Giant Bombcast, "We are announcing at least two titles at E3." How many games are in development at Capcom right now that we don't know about?!Other items of note are new looks at Spyborgs (the "actually a game" game for Wii) and Resident Evil The Darkside Chronicles. If you're one of the lucky few already chosen from the Capcommunity (see what we did there?) to attend, make sure to bring your jewel-encrusted Wiimote and blood-spattered Tricell messenger bag, so you don't look out of place. And send us tips!

  • Kawata: Darkside Chronicles a 'very dark' Resident Evil

Speaking to attendee's of last night's Resident Evil 5 launch party, Masachika Kawata, producer of the newly announced Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, shed more light on Capcom's Umbrella Chronicles sequel. Kawata addressed the crowd after screening the first trailer for the game."What we're looking to do is go back to a 'very dark' style of Resident Evil," Kawata said. "'Dark' is really a key word for this game. It will be shown in horror, in the storyline, in the emotions that the characters go through." We saw examples of this as Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield fought side-by-side through a zombie ravaged Racoon City, circa Resident Evil 2.He also explained that the development team at Cavia is "putting a lot of care, a lot of attention into [improving] how the camera system works in a rail-based shooter." This was evident in what was shown of the game's strong cinematic presentation, which included dramatic point-of-view shots of zombies feasting and the player narrowly escaping death with their partner's help. Kawata wrapped up his stint on stage saying that more information on the game would be revealed later this year, as everyone involved with the franchise is (rightly) focused on today's launch of RE5.

Click to embiggen. This is thriller -- thriller morning! First revealed via Famitsu scans, Capcom has officially confirmed the existence of the new Wii Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles -- and confirmed a North American release at the same time! The Darkside Chronicles is based on the Resident Evil 2 timeline and stars Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield in an Umbrella Chronicles-style rail shooter with "a more in-depth co-op experience" and a new "Evade system." The Cavia-developed shooter is expected this winter. In addition, Capcom is localizing the Wii ports of Resident Evil Zero (which Capcom's US branch previously declined at least twice) and the Resident Evil remake (which, as a port of a remake, is basically a zombie itself now) as a new "Resident Evil Classics" line for release this year. Both games feature new Wii Remote controls and will sell at a $29.99 price point, just like Nintendo's own ported Gamecube games!Update: Check Famitsu for a trailer!%Gallery-47570%

  • Rumor: Resident Evil 'Darkside Chronicles' coming to Wii

According to the latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu, the Wii's Resident Evil fans indeed have something to be "very happy" about. Well, at least if they're keen on another round of super-speed Resident Evil nostalgia, likely presented in the form of another first-person point-and-shooter. Though Capcom USA has yet to officially announce the game nor any specific details, Biohazard: The Darkside Chronicles looks to feature Resident Evil 2's protagonist pair, Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Oh, and zombies. Lots of 'em.We'll update with more information as soon as we can.[Thanks, Kevin]
