The team has joined Ubisoft and will be renamed to Ubisoft Leamington -- based on its location in the UK. A post on UbiBlog says that the studio will collaborate with Ubisoft Reflections, whose past projects include Assassin's Creed: Syndicate and last year's Watch Dogs 2, in addition to Ubisoft's worldwide teams on their AAA projects.

The latest act to join guitar tutor Rocksmith 2014 is Matchbox Twenty, a band you'll recall from the soundtrack of nearly every romantic comedy released in the latter part of the 1990s. Included in this latest DLC offering are five songs: "Unwell," "Push," "3AM," "How Far We've Come" and "She's So Mean." Like the prior Rocksmith DLC releases, which showcased bands such as Weezer and Oasis, all five of these tracks can be purchased for $12. If you'd rather pick up a few songs piecemeal, each is individually priced at $3. The Matchbox Twenty DLC is currently available for every incarnation of Rocksmith 2014, whether its on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or PC. According to publisher Ubisoft, Rocksmith 2014 can teach novices to play guitar in only 60 days, which should give you just enough time to assemble a band, book a few gigs, then watch the whole thing collapse due to drugs, sexy groupies and the prying eyes of the E! True Hollywood Story. [Image: Ubisoft]

If you've already played the entirety of Rocksmith 2014's set list behind your back while your guitar was on fire ... well, maybe you should go on tour. Five songs from Alice in Chains have been added to its DLC lineup though, so you'll still have something to practice with when you're not on stage. You rock star, you. The new offerings include "Man In The Box," "Hollow," "Would?," "Check My Brain" and "Them Bones." You can pick and choose by paying $2.99 per song, or you can buy them up collectively for $11.99. The DLC is currently available on the Xbox Live Marketplace and will reach the PlayStation Store on November 19.

Just in time for everyone's favorite pumpkin-related holiday, Ubisoft has announced the addition of five Smashing Pumpkins tracks to Rocksmith 2014. Included in the pack are five of the band's biggest, mid-90s singles. "Today" and "Disarm" originally appeared on 1993's Siamese Dream, while "Tonight, Tonight," "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "1979" hail from 1995's Melon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. These songs join "Cherub Rock," another cut from Siamese Dream already featured in Rocksmith 2014. The Smashing Pumpkins DLC pack is currently available for download from either the Xbox Live Marketplace or Steam. A PlayStation 3 iteration of the DLC is due on November 6. Each song can be purchased individually at $3 a piece, though if you pick up all five new tracks at once you'll only spend $12.

If you're a PC gamer looking forward to Friday's release of Batman: Arkham Origins and have yet to scoop up the previous two entries in the series, now might be a good time to do so, as they're 75 percent off on Steam until Monday, 10 am Pacific. That makes Batman: Arkham Asylum just $5.00, and Batman: Arkham City just $7.50. Both versions are Game of the Year editions, meaning even more batarang for your buck. Not a bat-fan? Amazon has unearthed savings on Tomb Raider and Metro: Last Light, which are both on sale for $19.99 through the week, while Best Buy is helping aspiring gamer musicians get into the groove by taking $50 off the cost of any electric guitar when you buy Rocksmith 2014. Lots of good things on sale, stranger.

  • Rocksmith 2014 will be a 'fully responsive personal teacher'

Rocksmith 2014's lesson mode will explain the causes for a player's mistakes and offer advice on how to fix them, an update to Ubisoft's blog announced this week. While the original Rocksmith told players when they were making mistakes, Rocksmith 2014 will explain exactly what's going wrong. If a player is struggling with a concept, the game will "pull you out of the interactive portion of the lesson and give you further instructions - this time with additional camera angles and tips." Ubisoft's update states that Rocksmith 2014 will triple the amount of lessons offered in the original game, covering everything from tuning a guitar to advanced playing techniques like tapping notes. Rocksmith 2014 will strap up for the 360, PS3 and PC this October. The game's soundtrack will include Jake White, Bob Dylan, Alice In Chains and more artists to be revealed at a later date. Pre-orders will include The Smashing Pumpkins' Cherub Rock as a bonus track.

Rocksmith, Ubisoft's guitar tutorial software, is in the Steam daily sale spotlight today, down to $7.50 until 10am PT tomorrow. This sale doesn't mitigate the need for a Rocksmith Real Tone Cable, so you'll need to purchase that separately. Steam has also initiated its weekend deals, highlighting both first-person medieval combat game Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and the alien-versus-human multiplayer shooter, Natural Selection 2, for $8.50 each. Unfortunately, both of these games also require cables to play – like a power cable and possibly some kind of display cable.

Since launching almost two years ago, Ubisoft's game of guitar studies Rocksmith has garnered 1.4 million sales. In the press release past the break, Ubisoft boasts it has sold 3 million DLC tracks to date and promises "exciting Rocksmith news" at E3 next week. Rocksmith was met with a mixed reception. Our own review criticized Rocksmith for its lack of music theory education, awkward audio latency issues and dearth of all nuance in the automatic difficulty tuner. An expansion focusing on the bass was introduced back in August of last year.

Just in case the thing that prevented you from buying Rocksmith on Steam was the lack of Maroon 5 songs, we'll just remove that musical obstacle for you right here and now. Valve reports that "Misery," "She Will Be Loved," and "Harder to Breathe" have all been added to the game. You can buy each song for $2.99, or pick them all up together for $7.99. Once purchased, you can play through the songs with a standard electric or bass guitar, and each song also adds a new authentic tone to play with on the game's Amp mode. Sweet Maroon 5-style haircuts are, unfortunately, sold separately.

Finally, you can use a computer for educational purposes. Rocksmith, the guitar teaching game originally released on Xbox 360 and PS3 by Ubisoft, is coming to Steam (and PC retail) October 16. There's a beta going on right now for pre-purchasers on Steam, though the digital version requires purchase of the necessary Realtone cable separately.Pre-purchasers also get virtual "Heavy Metal Gear" including simulated amps and effect pedals, and an immediate unlock of the "Guitarcade" mini-games. The recommended leather pants are not included with either pre-purchases or day one purchases, but perhaps your leather office chair is close enough.

Ubisoft has announced that the Bass Expansion for its educational guitar game, Rocksmith, is arriving on the PC on October 16. The DLC pack, which includes bass tracks and teaching functions for either a standard 6-string guitar or a 4-string bass guitar, hit Xbox 360 and PS3 earlier this August. In addition to content for the game's current songs, the Bass Expansion allows you to access bass information for any DLC songs in the future, so it's quite an investment. The Bass Expansion will be available for $29.99, the same initial price as the console versions. One important bass-playing thing it won't teach you is how to look cooler than the lead guitarist while you play. Better get started working on that right now.

Thus far, Rocksmith's digital training chops have been restricted to the electric guitar, but starting later this month, would-be virtuosos will finally be able to slap some bass with a new expansion. The expansion promises to help bassists "improve their skills like 2-finger plucking, slapping, and popping with dedicated bass technique challenges, tutorial videos and mini-games." Furthermore, all on-disc and DLC songs that feature a bass track will automatically support the expansion, meaning Rocksmith owners already have an available library of compatible songs. The Rocksmith bass expansion will land on August 14 for $30.

Guitar Apprentice sued Ubisoft last week for patent infringement on a "media system and method of progressive musical instruction" in USP 8,119,896. Guitar Apprentice filed this patent on October 12, 2010, while Ubisoft's Rocksmith launched on October 18, 2011 in North America and is due to hit Europe and Australia in September this year.A summary of the Guitar Apprentice patent describes its initial function as follows: "A method is provided for progressive musical instruction using a media system with processor-executable software modules storing musical performances each having a plurality of segments."Ubisoft has previously acknowledged that Rocksmith took inspiration and technology from Game Tank's Guitar Rising, and it is currently in a legal dispute with the UK band Rocksmith, who claims it owns all rights to the name.
