Watch Dogs is already setting new sales records in its first week on store shelves, as Ubisoft announced that its open-world hackathon has sold more copies in a 24-hour period than any other game in the publisher's history. "The buzz around Watch Dogs was driven by the incredible passion of our early fans," Creative Director Jonathan Morin said on Wednesday. "Today we broke the record for the biggest first day sales in Ubisoft history." While specific sales figures were not released, Game Informer puts the milestone in perspective, noting that Ubisoft's previous first-day sales record-holder Assassin's Creed 3 moved 12.5 million copies in its first five months of release. Watch Dogs premiered this week for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms, and a Wii U port is due to launch later this year. [Image: Ubisoft]

In news that pretty much surprises precisely nobody, Blizzard has once again topped the previously-set PC game sales records with the release of their newest World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm. Aside from their hefty day-one sales of 3.3 million copies sold (and that doesn't include Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Macau who had their release on the 9th) that we reported earlier, Cataclysm has now set a second record -- this time for most PC game copies sold in the first month -- with 4.7 million copies in all flying off shelves and into eager hands. Despite reports that consumer spending on video games is starting to drop off, World of Warcraft isn't showing any signs of massive slowdowns anytime soon. Having crossed the 12 million subscribed player mark last year, and with a slew of new jobs open to support their current games as well as work on the next generation, things definitely look good for Blizzard.

The runaway freight train that is World of Warcraft's third expansion has obliterated the 24-hour sales record set by the preceding WoW update. Cataclysm moved 3.3 million copies in its first day on the market, whereas 2008's Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8 million copies in its opening 24-hour salvo (a mark that established the record for the top-selling PC game in history at that point). "We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet," said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. Even so, the expansion failed to top the current 24-hour record of 5.5 million copies set last month by Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Mac Daily News and other sources are reporting today on a leaked AT&T memo that states that the company retail stores had their best day ever with the launch of the iPhone 3GS."iLaunch day 2009 was one for the record books, as AT&T customers scrambled to get their hands on the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet. Here's a look at some of the milestones we achieved:* Best-ever sales day in our retail stores* Second-largest traffic day in our retail stores* Most transactions processed via our IT systems in a single day* Most upgrade eligibility checks in a single day* Largest order day in att.com history* Largest features sales day in att.com historyOn this year's launch day, iPhone sales exceeded sales recorded on 2008's iPhone launch day, Black Friday 2008 and Dec. 26, 2008 - all heavy-volume sales days. In fact, this year we surpassed 2008's launch day sales at about noon Central time, and sustained our previous peak hour record, also set in 2008, for 11 straight hours."If the numbers are accurate, the iPhone blew by most analyst predictions that the iPhone would not sell as well as the 3G iPhone released last summer.Even better news, numbers like these should give Apple some leverage to force the wireless giant to improve what for many is a mediocre experience using the AT&T network. The iPhone exclusive is up next year, and rumors persist that Apple is talking to other carriers, most notably Verizon. via Mac Daily News and TechCrunch

I have to admit I've always been one of those anti-Madden snobs who would make fun of their friends for spending $50 every year to what usually amounts to new rosters. But today, I picked up Madden 07 on the PSP, and I gotta say, the game is incredibly fun. So with that said, I find it great to hear the game has broken all kinds of sales records. EA has said the game has sold more than two million copies in its first week of release, which is the most in its 17-year history. Additionally, sales have increased 12 percent from last year's roster update game."We put a ton of innovation into Madden NFL 07 from new game modes and controls to NFL Superstar Hall of Fame," said Todd Sitrin, EA Vice President of Marketing. "Consumers are the most meaningful judge of game quality and based on sales and the record-setting online activity, our toughest critics think Madden NFL has delivered another great game experience."Well, laugh it up EA; it looks like you've got yourself another successful year of Madden on your hands. Also, did you know there have been more than 53 million copies of the Madden franchise sold to date? That's beyond ridiculous.(Via PSP Advanced)
