The Analogue Mega SG wins the retro gaming console war

There's never been a better time to be a retro video game enthusiast. Playing old video games on modern screens used to require elaborate cabling and detailed electronics knowledge, or you would have to wade into dodgy ROM sites and tinker with confusing emulators. Today, however, we are blessed with a panoply of options, led by Nintendo's "classic" mini-consoles. But the premium, top-of-the-line retro console maker remains the hipsterish British-American company, Analogue. Analogue's Super NT, a Super Nintendo (SNES) hardware emulator released last year, was a revitalization of the SNES library ready to plug and play (and upscale) to modern HD televisions with a graphical fidelity unmatched by even Nintendo's own offerings. But the Super NT was just the tip of the retro spear, because, as any '90s kid will tell you, some console wars never die. And sure enough, Analogue has just released their take on the other dominant console of the 16-bit era: the Sega Genesis. Analogue's Mega SG is a beautiful little piece of hardware that does for the Genesis/Sega CD/Master System library what the Super NT did for the Super Nintendo -- and is the better value proposition of the two.

The Wonder Boy series originally debuted in arcades in 1986, spawning five sequels over the next few years, namely Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap. That platformer made its way to the Sega Master System in 1989, featuring colorful and rich gameplay with "Metroidvania" elements and rave reviews from critics upon its release.

Do you have $164,000 handy? If so, you can snag nearly every retro console game since the beginning of the NES era. Ebay seller "reel.big.fish," also known as Nintendo Twizer, is selling a positively massive collection of games and consoles, spanning everything from the NES to Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy and much more. He claims to have complete sets of every single game for Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Virtual Boy, 32X, Sega Master System, Game Gear and NES (except for Stadium Events), in addition to several incomplete sets for other consoles, notably a hefty Sega Genesis collection. On top of all the games, there are also multiple variants of various consoles, including every single N64 color. There's far too much to list here – almost 6,000 games – so you may as well watch the video above, and you can also peruse the master list of every single game in the collection. The catch is that it's all being sold as a single lot, with a $164,000 asking price. That's pretty steep, to be sure, but before you scoff at the price, don't forget the crown jewel of the collection, a framed copy of "No One Wants to Play Sega with Harrison Ford," signed by artist Brandon Bird.

  • Wonder Boy creator Westone filing for bankruptcy

Veteran Japanese developer Westone Bit Entertainment is facing bankruptcy after nearly 30 years of operation, Game Watch Impress reports (via Sega Nerds). After debuting in 1986 with its landmark arcade side-scroller Wonder Boy (later adapted for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System as Hudson's Adventure Island), Westone went on to create the Monster World series, which saw several sequels across the Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, and TurboGrafx-16. The series was later compiled in the Japan-exclusive Monster World Complete Collection for the PlayStation 2, and eventually made its way to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with the 2012 launch of Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World. Westone has entered liquidation process and its website has since shuttered. Sega has issued no word regarding whether the closure will affect the continued sale of Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World. [Image: Sega / Westone]

If the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS has you jonesing for a similar arena fighter featuring Sega's classic characters, you'll want to check out Sega Master System Brawl (direct download link), a recently updated homebrew release for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive. Kids who grew up on the Sega Master System (our own Alexander Sliwinski among them) will recognize several featured cast members, including Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy in Monster Land star Tom-Tom, and Shinobi's Joe Musashi. The latest version's roster also includes characters and backdrops from a selection of lesser-known Master System greats like Kung-Fu Kid and the Castlevania-inspired Vampire: Master of Darkness. Creator "Bonaf" tells Sega Nerds that future updates will add playable characters like JJ from Zillion, Dynamite Dux's Bean, and Sonic the Hedgehog himself. Sega Master System Brawl is available as a downloadable ROM file, and is playable via emulation and on original Sega Genesis hardware using a flash cartridge. [Video: Bonaf]

  • 'Project Unity' is 15 fully-functional consoles in one giant box

Constructed by evil genius/mad scientist/hardware hacker Bacteria, Project Unity is a single, unified gaming console that can play Sega Master System, Neo Geo MVS, GameCube, Dreamcast, Saturn, Intellivision, Colecovision, Atari 7800, Turbografx 16, PS1/PS2, Mega Drive, NES, Super NES, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64 and Amstrad GX4000 games.Project Unity's most impressive feature, besides the fact that it works, is that it was constructed entirely out of authentic hardware and does not make use of emulators or combo units like the FC Twin. It also manages to use a single power supply, video output and custom-built controller, regardless of the system selected.Jump to 09:30 in the video above for a demonstration of this behemoth in action, including the repurposed NES cartridges that contain different circuit boards for each controller type, or start from the beginning for some deliciously chaotic wiring shots.

Most gamer who want to play with more than one or two vintage console platforms often turn to software-based emulators that may or may not be above-board. How about stuffing all of the authentic hardware into one controller and one base unit? Modders at Bacteria's forums have developed Project Unity, an attempt to natively address 20 consoles across 17 actual platforms folded into a single device. The gamepad, arguably the centerpiece, includes two each of analog sticks and directional pads, along with multiple shoulder buttons and a central button grid that can either be used to steer an Intellivision or fill in for otherwise missing controls. Stuffing the unique controller hardware into one gamepad obviously presents problems with board sizes and the laws of physics, so much of the relevant circuitry sits in modified NES cartridges. Our only dismays are the lack of original Xbox support and the slightly imposing challenge of aggregating and modifying that much classic gaming componentry in one place -- if you're more concerned about convenience in your retro gaming than preserving the original feel of that Sega Master System or SNK NeoGeo, though, you've just found Utopia.

Are Nintendo and Sony's portable gaming offerings not doing anything for you? Yearn for the days of Hedgehog-based adventure? You're not alone -- though, unless you're as crafty as "lovablechevy," you're going to have to settle for whatever you can find on eBay or in a dusty shoebox under a bed at your parents' house. The modder resurrected a Game Gear with a custom case created using the beloved Sega portable, a Master Gear converter, a screen from a PS One, and assorted other bits and pieces. The franken-portable can play Game Gear and Master System titles, has a rechargeable battery, and weighs a hefty two-plus pounds. Alex Kidd comes to the rescue on the Virtual Console this week. It's more of his usual hijinks in the latest Alex Kidd entry from Sega, as players must call upon the powers of Shinobi -- including platforming, dodging incoming throwing stars and chopping dudes up something fierce. Check it all out in the latest episode of VC in Brief above! Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (Sega Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Oh, and big ups to reader Cody Borst for creating that sweet new intro. Heck of a job, Cody! Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks like that.

This week's Virtual Console update is quite the doozie, giving us one obscure C64 title and one game we've played a billion times. We don't mean to sound bitter, but we're pretty sure there's a baker's dozen Wonder Boy games littering the lands of the Virtual Console. Check 'em out above! This week's Virtual Console releases kind of pale in comparison to last week's stellar offerings; Fighting Street is a crummy game that helped spawn one of gaming's best series, whereas R-TYPE is a great game, though the version offered this week is the lousier port. There's been a way more competent version of the game available since 2006! Fighting Street (TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) R-TYPE (Sega Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. It's a full week on WiiWare and the Virtual Console for Wii owners. We've got two new WiiWare games, but, sadly, only one Virtual Console game. Looks like that streak Nintendo's been on for a while now will continue. Oh well, onto this week's releases:WiiWare LONPOS (Nintendo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): A puzzle game not for the weak of heart, LONPOS tasks players with solving puzzles revolving around a rectangular area comprised of 55 spaces. Using 12 different pieces, the goal is to fill the entire playing field and not have any pieces left over. Snowboard Riot (Hudson Entertainment, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Fantasy Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Hudson's snowboarding game takes advantage of the Wii Balance Board and is full of ... well, racing down mountains covered in snow. Virtual ConsoleSonic Chaos (SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Players can go through the game as either Sonic or Tails in an attempt to stop Dr. Eggman, who has nabbed the Red Chaos Emerald and plans to use it to create nuclear weapons. No, we did not just make that up. Gallery: Snowboard Riot
