  • RuneScape: Seventh anniversary retrospective

    Although RuneScape officially launched in 2001, today marks the seventh anniversary of the end of the RuneScape 2 beta. This was a complete gameplay and graphics overhaul that signaled the rebirth of the game, and it's a date well worth celebrating. The past year has been filled with massive content updates that added clan support, upgradeable clan citadels, a new website, and countless new quests. Player-made battlefields put game design in the hands of players, who have used the system to produce ton of content. Understandably, most people will likely remember this year for one thing: This was the year that RuneScape beat the bots. Following the momentous Bot Nuking Day, players logged in to find a distinctly emptier world but one filled with real people. RuneFest 2011 was a success, with presentations from the game's developers and a special focus on breaking the bots. This year also saw the interesting story that the Dutch Supreme Court ruling that stealing RuneScape items is the same as theft of real life goods. In this anniversary retrospective, I look back at some of RuneScape's top news stories and game additions of the year.

  • City of Heroes developers look back and show off the team

    While we've been taking our own stroll down memory lane with City of Heroes, there are people who haven't just been playing the game for seven years but actively working on it the whole time. With the anniversary still fresh in everyone's mind, the developers have begun posting a series of retrospectives on the game's past, with the first installment asking a number of staff members which of the game's several updates was the all-time best. If that's not quite what you're looking for, today has also seen the latest issue of the Intrepid Informer, introducing players to VFX artist Keetsie Braz da Cunha. While the VFX team might not always be one of the most visible elements of the game, the little sparkles and shines are what gives City of Heroes its spark (pun intended). So take a look behind the scenes to see what it's like making superheroes look appropriately super along with fountains looking appropriately foamy.

  • Goddess of Destruction expansion brings big changes to Lineage II [Updated]

    'Tis the month for MMO anniversaries it seems, and Lineage II is joining the likes of City of Heroes, Free Realms, Guild Wars, and Lord of the Rings Online in front of the birthday cake. NCsoft's long-running fantasy opus is also throwing a bigger bash than any of its contemporaries. Today marks the release of the new Goddess of Destruction expansion, and it's a doozy, bringing new classes, skills, and hunting grounds to the world of Aden. The devs have added 30 new hunting grounds, 60 new raid bosses, and more than 400 new equipment items, making this the largest content update in the game's seven-year history. The level cap has been increased from 85 to 99, and characters above 85 can awaken eight new classes to take on the titular goddess Shilen and her minions. Finally, the expansion boasts new starting areas, a relaxed leveling curve, and instanced clan housing, all wrapped inside a free update for Lineage II subscribers. [Update: The expansion is not released yet, as this official word from NCsoft states: "Goddess of Destruction is a free update to existing players releasing later this year, and will be available as an all-new retail box as well as a digital SKU for players looking to join the game with additional value and incentives."]
