Skyrim came out in 2011 but earlier this month, a modder released Holds: The City Overhaul, an expansion that renovates every village and town in the game. Even among a mod community that refuses to let the game die, this addition was a Herculean task, taking the modder an average two hours a day over three years to finish. That's a labor of love.

Remakes and remasters seem to be all the rage these days, what with games like The Last of Us Remastered recently released and Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire on the horizon. But those are official efforts with big-name companies like Naughty Dog and Nintendo attached; let us not forget about the little guys like modder KorinOo, who's remaking the PlayStation classic, MediEvil, using Skyrim. KorinOo isn't planning to remake the entire game, mind you - just the first four levels, which encompass Sir Daniel Fortesque's initial rise from the grave to the game's first boss fight. Even factoring in the liberties KorinOo will be taking by utilizing Skyrim's engine, the game won't be a perfect copy. "I want to make all the levels/areas recognizable and close to original, but at the same time I want to update some archaic mechanics (combat, interactions, etc.) to modern standards," KorinOo writes on the project's NexusMod page. The mod has been a work in progress for some time, but with the recent release of the trailer you see above, it looks like KorinOo is on their way to completing their quest. • World of Warcraft comes to Skyrim with Scholomance dungeon

I have to confess: Scholomance and its spiritual successor Karazhan are still my favorite dungeons in the game. I must just have a thing about creepy castles full of necromancers, undead, and ghosts. Which would also explain why I like Bethesda's Skyrim so much, because everywhere you turn there are necromancers and their undead servants, just waiting for you to put them out of their lifeless misery. So I can't even begin to explain how pleased I am to see that an intrepid modder has created a version of Scholomance within the world of Skyrim using the Skyrim Creation Kit. Mod-maker AquariusLAD says he tried to stay as close to the original as possible, and, judging by these screenshots, it really looks like he's succeeded. To enjoy Skyrim's version Scholomance, you need to be playing on the PC (sorry, console gamers!), where you download the mod file, unzip it, and drop it in the /data/ folder in your Skyrim directory. Once it's installed, you should find the entrance to Scholomance just inside the Markarth Emporium.

  • Skyrim Online MMO-ish mod gaining momentum

Skyrim Online isn't really an MMO. Heck, it's not even a fully functioning mod yet, nor will it ever be officially supported. It's pretty cool, though, particularly given that its aim is to enable co-op play within the sprawling world of Bethesda's latest Elder Scrolls epic. When we first heard of the mod last winter, it was pretty rough, with other players displaying as inanimate prisoner NPCs sans any clothing or armor. Now, though, the devs have managed to add some armor, basic run and walk animations, and general chat. There's still a lot left to do, including a party system, trading, AI synchronization, and PvP, but you can see a video clip of the recent progress after the break. [Thanks Sandboxer for the tip!]

  • Skyrim Online mod aims to take the game, er, online

OK, stop me if you've heard this one before. "The Elder Scrolls is awesome, but I wish it was an MMO." Apparently some enterprising modders have similar designs, and if a full-blown massively multiplayer conversion seems unlikely, a small-scale online version of Skyrim looks very possible. GameFront is reporting on a new mod for the PC version of the game (you did buy the PC version, didn't you?) that takes the celebrated series into the online realm. According to the mod's author, it will allow you to "play with your friends, chat with people worldwide, [and] trade with other players." No word yet on lootstealing or ganking noobs. FPSWin has some early video footage of the Skyrim Online experiment which we've embedded for you after the cut. It's definitely not polished (the animations are poor and the player characters are glitchy), but there is a functioning chatbox. If nothing else, it's a start, amirite?
