Captain's Log, Stardate 65322.9... Hello, computer (and players)! For the past several weeks, Star Trek Online players have been checking out the latest F2P beta builds on the Tribble test server. While there have been a few patches on other days, more for stability fixes and minor tweaking, Thursdays seem to be the designated day for us to receive the largest pushes of new content. The latest round of updates has brought further economy changes, new events and ships, and even more heated debates. Since we seem to be a ways out from the seeing the updates ported to the Holodeck live server, there is still plenty of time to check it all out and provide your feedback to the devs. I would like to dedicate this entry to those who are helping test the changes. This week's Captain's Log serves as a checklist of sorts on what new content you can test and where you can provide feedback about it. As you read through, I suggest that you read a particular section, jump into game to check out the particular change, formulate an opinion, and head to the linked forum where you can leave your feedback. No matter what you think, it's important to let the devs know -- they will make changes based upon a collective opinion. Ensign, warp 10! It's time to create our own party rock anthem...

Captain's Log, Stardate 64768.1... Hello, computer (and players)! One of the best parts about playing MMOs is the ability to group up with other real players and conquer certain tasks. Whether they're taking on a pesky boss or battling through a heroic dungeon, endgame players are constantly seeking out challenges to help keep their interest up on their max-level toons. In my opinion, the best part about endgame content is teaming up and raiding. While I have never experienced or played in a 25-man (nor even a 10-man) raid, I am super excited to talk about one of my favorite subjects within the Star Trek Online universe -- the Special Task Forces. Originally introduced in February of 2010, the STFs have provided a unique challenge to Admiral-level toons looking to do more than patrol and complete dailies. In the endgame sector, Gamma Orionis, Federation and Klingon forces are battling against the Borg and Undine in an attempt to stop their advances into the Alpha and Beta quadrants. While these are only 5-man "radisodes," they are nothing to sneeze at -- you cannot go into one of these without a game plan. Ready to learn about what it takes to save the galaxy? Ensign, warp 10! Let's show our readers that resistance is not futile...

  • Captain's Log: Ask Cryptic raises questions about STO's future

The future of Star Trek Online comes up a lot in Captain's Log. Whether imagining cool new features or picking apart comments by Executive Producer Daniel Stahl, I ponder STO's tomorrows fairly frequently. But, hey, it's not my fault the folks at Cryptic Studios talk about the game's near and far future so much, right? Especially with their monthly Ask Cryptic feature, the developers address the game's, er, development all the time. This month's extra-hefty Ask Cryptic offers players a lot of tasty food for thought -- but a forum post I missed last week has given me indigestion.

Welcome, one and all, to another edition of Captain's Log, our weekly column on everyone's favorite Star Trek MMO, Star Trek Online. I'm afraid I must renege once again on my promise to tackle the Klingon beginner experience. But I forgot that Cryptic Studios' latest MMO will be 3 months old this Sunday! That's right! STO launched a whopping three months ago, on Feb. 2, 2010. Why, it feels like just yesterday that my newly created Bajoran Science Officer took his first laggy footsteps on Earth Starbase in search of Commander Sulu. As we are wont to do with our favorite games here at Massively, let's look back at STO's first few months and take stock of its past, present and future.

Hailing frequencies open. Testing. Is this thing on? Yes, Lieutenant, I'm pushing the-- ah! Greetings and salutations, fellow Starfleet officers! And a hearty nuqneH to all you Klingons out there. Welcome back to Captain's Log, the weekly Star Trek Online column here at Massively. After a few weeks of tuning down in Engineering, Captain's Log is back, shinier than ever, with a new captain at the helm. Now let's set sail before the admirals at Massively reassign me to replicator cleanup duty. You've never seen a mess until you've seen someone order haggis and Ferengi snail juice. Federation and Klingon captains all over the galaxy have reason to rejoice. Thursday saw the release of Season One: Common Ground, one of the first really huge content patches for Star Trek Online. The patch introduces a bevy of features, including new fleet actions, a new task-force mission and more stuff for Klingons to do.

Cryptic has been working hard to expand communication with fans of Star Trek Online, and by all accounts they're having some success. The latest addition to the Star Trek Online site is a calendar of upcoming events, promising all sorts of goodies in store for fans in the next few months. The calendar currently covers March and April, and shows four upcoming Special Task Force missions in addition to the one released last Thursday. Infected caused quite a stir in the STO community and proved to be a bit more of a challenge than many players had anticipated, and one forum member earned the thanks of his peers by putting together a very well-done guide. It will be interesting to see if the future STF missions hold as much of a challenge now that players know to expect a higher difficulty level. The other item on the calendar is a release date for Update 1. Okay, two release dates. The title of the update is still unannounced, but we now know that it will be sometime in the second half of March. So enjoy the STF missions while you wait, and we'll be keeping an eye out for patch notes!

Trekkies will soon have a chance to face off against a new, deadlier Borg adversary in the first wave of "Special Task Force Missions" in Star Trek Online. Federation and Klingon players alike will have the opportunity to tackle the difficult five-person PvE quests when the update hits the recently released MMO. The first five STF missions include "Children of Khan," where an escaped Amar Singh GTA's the U.S.S. Asgard and races toward the remains of the Mutara Nebula and "Infected," where more than 400 Starfleet officers aboard a star base have seemingly disappeared off the galaxy and require immediate assistance to combat the new Borg enemy. More details and screens can be found at Massively.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/playable_web_games/Star_Trek_Online_s_First_Raid_Missions_Look_Awesome'; Star Trek Online will soon see it's first wave of "Special Task Force Missions" go live, most of which are centered around the new, deadlier Borg. Shared by both Federation and Klingon players, these five-man missions are end-game content designed to give any captain cause for caution. So, if you're the type of player waiting around for some really difficult-yet-rewarding PvE content, this update should be of particular interest. We've got a smattering of screenshots to ogle while we wait for patch day. Additionally, there's an official rundown of the first five STF missions just after the break. %Gallery-86596%
