We may still be waiting for iriver's WiFi-packing P35 PMP to make its first official appearance 'round these parts, but it looks like folks in Korea are now already getting upgrades to the player, with iriver recently rolling out a new 32GB model. That'll run you 488,000 South Korean won (or about $389) which, as you might expect, will get you a player that's otherwise identical to the previous model, including the same 4.3-inch WQVGA display, a built-in DMB TV tuner, a microSD card slot for additional storage, and iriver's trademark Spinn controls, to name a few features. No word if this particular model will be making an appearance when the line makes its US debut this fall but, if it does, you can be sure iriver will have already moved on to bigger and better things in Korea.[Via SlashGear]

It certainly doesn't seem to have been in a rush to bring it to these shores, but iriver has now finally announced (in teaser form) that its P35 PMP will indeed be getting an official US release... this fall. That will version will obviously ditch the DMB TV found in its Korean counterpart, but it should be otherwise identical, including up to 16GB of storage (plus an SDHC card slot), a 4.3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, a full-fledged web browser (on the WiFi version, at least), a promised 16 hours of battery life (or seven for video) and, of course, iriver's trademark SPINN controls. No word on pricing just yet, as you might have guessed, but the Korean version started at the local equivalent of $286.

We were pretty impressed by the unique design of the iriver SPINN media player when we got our hands on it last year, but that doesn't mean it's a design that'll instantly improve any device, as fully exemplified by this little wonder now making the rounds in China. Apparently dubbed the SWIVEL-CAM, this one's a 5-megapixel shooter that packs an 8x digital zoom (and digital zoom only), along with a 3-inch LCD, 16MB of internal memory, an SD card slot for expansion, and video recording in either 4:3 or 16:9 modes, not to mention the usual e-book reader, voice recorder, and "game player." Intrigued? Then you can get your order in right now for $120.[Via PMP Today]

We're not going to bother asking this here SPINN if it's headed to a funeral, but we will ask iriver if it has any plans on shipping an all black variant to the US of A. Currently, the only hue Americans can find is the tried and true silver, but based on a smattering of photographs posted on the Korean iriver forums, we get the feeling a dark, dark version is in the works for at least some sections of the globe. Let's all cross our fingers in unison and hope our homeland is included in that bunch, yeah?[Via DAP Review]

The SPINN is easily the sexiest device on iriver's tawdry pallet of gadget-lust. Unfortunately, we found the user experience to be a bit lacking at launch. While the feature list is long and impressive, the UI just couldn't pull it all together. Now SPINN's gone 2.0 and with it hope for the device to live up to our giddy first impressions. New to this firmware update is a memo taking feature, big glorious album art, auto rotating pictures, auto-recording of DMB television, and DAB or FM radio (where supported), increased control over video playback, and game downloads for those of you in Korea. Man, these guys and gals are quick. Just weeks after we were finally able to hold an iriver SPINN in our own palms, along comes this marvel from China-based QQ. The K819 unashamedly apes the most telling design characteristics of iriver's latest, though the phony does come in multiple hues while boasting "high-grade texture" and oodles of "elegance and style." To be honest, we're not so sure any of these images are more than mere renders, though QQ does promise a 3.0-inch WQVGA display, MP4 support and guaranteed humiliation from your pals.[Via PMPToday]

We've had iriver's SPINN laying around the Engadget HQ for a little while, and figure we've finally fiddled with the player enough to write down some impressions. If you're looking for the one liner, here it is: we're blown away by the beauty of the hardware, but the barebones player software, lack of an "ecosystem," and hefty price really hurt its chances with the mainstream. • iriver SPINN hits the streets at last

It's been a long wait since we first saw iriver hint at the SPINN way back at CES in January, but the flash player is finally shipping -- just a few days late. Our full hands-on impressions are on the way, but there's no denying that iriver has caught our eye with this distinctive player. 3.3-inch OLED touchscreen, unique spin controls and that traditional iriver eye for design make this thing potentially worth the hefty $250 (4GB) and $290 (8GB) asking prices -- though we have a few issues with long-term usability we'll need to hash out. It'll be available at iriverinc.com, Amazon.com, J&R and B&H online stores, though iriver's seems to be the only one with it live just yet.

If you've been seriously jonesing for a viable and attractive alternative to Apple's iPod offerings, you may just be in luck. According to iriver, the geek-lust SPINN PMP will be available -- and shipping -- on October 3rd in both 4GB ($249.99) and 8GB ($289.99) varieties. In case you're unclear on the specs, the unique widescreen device sports a 3.3-inch, 480 x 272 AMOLED display, support for MP3, WMA, OGG, APE, FLAC, AVI, and WMV (amongst other) files, FM tuner, and Bluetooth 2.0. Of course, the devices are destined for XP / Vista setups, and don't feature any of that fancy wireless connectivity users are likely getting used to -- but then again, they certainly don't look like other players on the market.[Via Pocketables]

  • Video: Hands-on iriver's SPINN, the first true iPod killer

    08.29.2008

We've seen iriver's SPINN (above between the HTC Touch Dual and iPhone 3G) floating around Korea in pics and video for a few weeks now. But damn if this little 3.3-inch DAP doesn't make a distinct impression in person. Of course, you've heard the term "iPod killer" tossed around for years with obvious effect. But this, this little SPINN with brilliant OLED display and up to 16GB of storage looks to be device-for-device superior to the bigger iPod touch. The SPINN navigation is very well implemented and allows for natural and precise one-handed operation with heavy tactile control -- touchscreen too if that's your preference. Of course, making an iPod killer is about more than just the device -- it's the ecosystem of PC software, third party accessories, and daunting global distribution and retail model which faces any upstart vendor. On sale now in Korea, iriver hopes to address the latter piece of the puzzle as they prepare for a global (US, UK, and Europe) launch in September or October -- assuming they can sort out the necessary distribution / retail channels this week at IFA. Remember, it's already got FCC's nod of approval.%Gallery-30729%

We just caught sight of a video of iriver's sleek new Spinn media player the other day, but if you've been hankering for an even closer look at the device, you can now hit up Crave's UK site for a thorough hands-on look at it. That includes, as you can see, a comparison with a slew of other devices (the Spinn is the shining beacon of silver in the middle), as well as some pics that give a better indication of the device's fit and finish (and unfortunately non-standard USB connector). What's more, while they're reserving final judgment for their full review, the folks at Crave certainly seem to be impressed with the unit, saying that AMOLED screen is "unbelievably crisp," and that the player itself is "well worth the excitement." [Thanks, Andew]

Oh yes it is. iriver's 3.3-inch Spinn media player with AMOLED display has finally been captured on video. That gives us a first look at the new SPINN Wheel controller and how it assists with navigating the touch-screen display with haptic feedback. Gotta say, the navigation looks extremely impressive causing our want factor to burrow a bit deeper down into our wallets. Check the UI in action after the break.[Via iriverfans.com]

  • iriver's touchscreen Spinn gets priced for pre-order

You read that title correctly, iriver's Spinn is apparently touchscreen (not D-Click as mentioned in the FCC leaked user manual) and features haptic feedback to boot. Now that it's officially spec'd on iriver's Korean site, we're also seeing a slightly degraded audio lifespan of 24-hours (not 27) and the apparent removal of the mini SD slot -- it's no longer mentioned in the specs and we don't see a suitable slot on any of the pictures. Otherwise, it's the same sleek slab of 10.7-mm thick metal and plastic sporting a 3.3-inch, 480 x 272 pixel AMOLED display, T-DMB TV, Bluetooth, and new analog SPINN Wheel we've seen kicking around since CES. Currently on pre-order for South Korea with the 4GB model fetching 259,000KRW (about $259) or 8GB for 299,000KRW (about $299). That's right, it maxes out with just 8GB of flash. Check the gallery while we all anxiously await iriver's international launch plans including the rumored August UK release. %Gallery-28669%[Via DAP Review, thanks Al]

Sure, it doesn't look like much thanks to the FCC's staunch aversion to photo glam, but that's iriver's Spinn PMP, a product which had us at a full, rigid swoon back at CES. While this would generally be good news, the model approved features a DAB radio and DMB television tuner -- in other words, it's not intended for US consumption. The user manual also confirms a FM radio, Mini SD slot, Bluetooth, D-Click System interface, 27 hours of audio and 5 hours of video, and support for SWF (Flash), TXT, MP3, WMA, OGG, JPG, AVI, MWV file formats. With FCC approval out of the way, the rumored UK August release date is presumably in the bag.

We haven't heard much about iRiver's shiny new Spinn PMP since it was unveiled at CES earlier this year, but Crave has now turned up a couple of fresh new details on the device, including word of the all important release date. That'll apparently come sometime in August (in the UK, at least), although there's unfortunately still no word on prices. Otherwise, Crave has confirmed that the player will still be arriving in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB varieties, and that it'll be shipping with built-in DAB radio in the UK, as well as built-in Bluetooth and a dedicated (but unspecified) 3D acceleration chip to spice up the interface a bit. In case you missed 'em the first time around, you can find our shots of the device (under glass) here.[Thanks, Alsyl]

  • iriver's CES teaser site fleshes out Lplayer, Spinn

Last time we were talking about these two, iriver was a bit short on images, which is pretty much criminal given the kind of design going into these PMPs. Iriver's ongoing teaser site has now been updated with a bevy of Spinn images, plus the first Lplayer shots we've seen anywhere. All we really picked up from the Spinn shots is that it'll be available in pure white or brush metal, but the Lplayer shots solved a couple mysteries. It looks like iriver is positioning the Lplayer as a sort of Clix mini, with a 2-inch display surrounded by almost zero bezel, and that same D*Click interface. Iriver looks to be further stressing the simplicity of the device with an ultra-minimal interface, but is spicing things up a little with a color selection of white, purple, brown and cyan. Check out the gallery below of all the sexiness.[Thanks, alsyl]%Gallery-13006%

iRiver was being awful coy with its stable of hot new gear -- we couldn't even get their reps to say anything would be out in North America, much less finagle pricing or ship dates -- but the new Spinn, iAmoled, and Wing still managed to charm us from behind the glass. We did get to poke around with the W7, P10, and the Unit 2 -- which was still impressive, even though it crashed -- and the Dicple D30, all of which had amazing build quality. Hopefully we'll see this stuff hit our fair shores soon, but for now, check 'em all out in our gallery! %Gallery-13159%

While iriver is bringing plenty of love to CES 2008, it looks like there's more in store for the patient DAP-lovers out there. Some of these we've already seen, like the P10, Unit 2 and W7, but the new Spinn and IAmoled P20 (pictured) and Wing are easily worth the price of admission. The Spinn uses iriver's new SPINN analog toggle wheel that we spotted on that APlayer DAP, but also tosses in a 3.2-inch 480 x 272 screen, Bluetooth 2.0, Flash 2.0 gaming and DMB in regions where available. Capacities hit 4GB, 8GB and 16GB of flash memory. Iriver is also prepping the IAmoled Photo Tank media storage unit, which packs a 80GB or 160GB HDD and 4.1-inch AMOLED screen. The unit uses the same SPINN interface and matches the Spinn on specs, but adds TV out and SD / CF slots. Finally, iriver's Wing ultraportable handheld features the Windows CE Pro OS, WiFi, a QWERTY keyboard and 4GB of flash memory. There's also a SD card slot and plenty of VoIP and web-friendly features, including IM and a browser. Obviously we have no idea when these will be hitting the market or for how much, but hopefully iriver will have them ready before the middle of the year. Peep Spinn and Wing after the break.Update: The iAMOLED is actually the P20 in two prototype flavors: a prototype 1 model for consumers (pictured) and a 120GB / 160GB photo storage solution for photogs. iAMOLED appears to refer to a partnership between iriver and Samsung to bring the world's first AMOLED display on a handheld device.
