VC Friday: 'Arrrr's and cars
It's a double WiiWare update for this Friday, PAL peeps. Oxygen's Pirates: The Key of Dreams is an unknown quantity, but appears to be some kind of piracy-themed scrolling shooter with strategic elements. If that sounds like it has potential, the footage we've seen so far (viewable, as usual, after the break) isn't filling us with bright-eyed optimism. We'll be downloading that today and giving it a whirl, so let's hope we're wrong!SPOGS Racing, on the other hand, is very much a known quantity, and not a very great one, either -- we slapped a three out of ten on it. Developers dish on My Life as a King on the Nintendo Channel
While we do love all different kinds of trailers and videos to spaz up our normally dull internet lives, we really appreciate when we come away with something useful after watching one. That's why we love developer's diaries, especially ones that involve the beloved Square Enix, and especially when said Squeenix game is WiiWare's My Life as a King. With the exception of the almost monotonous voice-over work, we found the video and the tidbits of info offered interesting. Note, though, that we're still a little bitter about the "content updates," which is the developers' euphemism for "Square Enix maiming our wallets for stuff that should have been included in the first place." Nothing else too special hit the video channel, aside from some previews of upcoming games. SPOGS Racing slams into WiiWare
Talk about your emotional roller coasters. We spoke just yesterday of our attempts to bring Pogs back into the public consciousness, so a brief glance at this week's WiiWare title, SPOGS Racing (1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points), filled our hearts with glee. But just as we made bids on every eBay Pogs lot we could find we re-read the title and started praying that someone out there was willing to pay more than $23.50 for an Alf Slammer.So, apparently, SPOGS have nothing to do with Pogs, except in the fact that they're both disc shaped and that you likely have a minimum of interest in them. VC Monday Madness: SPOGS and King of the Monsters
There's two items for download on the Wii this week, as we receive one WiiWare and one Virtual Console title in North America. Is the PSP a sleeping giant? D2C thinks so
Scott Orr, founder of D2C Games, had an optimistic view on the PSP in a recent interview with Gamasutra. He believes that, given the handheld's increasingly strong sales, "the PSP platform is a sleeping giant." The only thing it's waiting on is "content that's value priced and easily obtainable." Supporting this thought, D2C Games is porting its WiiWare title SPOGS Racing to the PSP this June. While porting over a budget title from the Wii is not really a clear indication of fully supporting the "sleeping giant," it is good to see D2C putting something on the PSP. The company's positive outlook does seem a bit surprising given that Orr himself admitted that D2C's previous venture on the handheld did not fare too well in terms of sales. We're talking about the digital comic The Cryptics. In any case, it's always nice to know that there are developers out there willing to bring content to the PSP. The PSP, as most of you have noticed, is experiencing a gaming drought with little to no new games released weekly. So, hearing positive support like this is great. We would only hope though that there be more original IP. Mr. Orr, what the PSP is really waiting on is content -- not just the value-priced or easily obtainable ones.
