  • Ultra Street Fighter 4 adds 'Ultra Combo Double' and 'Red Focus Attack' mechanics

Capcom's forthcoming flagship fighter update Ultra Street Fighter 4 will introduce two new gameplay mechanics, which add an additional layer of defensive and offensive utility to the game's existing stable of meters and gameplay systems. "Ultra Combo Double," the first new mechanic, allows players to select both of their character's Ultra Combos, rather than one or the other, as has been the case since the original Street Fighter 4. The price paid for this strategic advantage is that each Ultra Combo does less damage than it would under normal circumstances, trading raw power for the added utility of multiple Ultras. Classical, single-Ultra options are still available, of course. "Red Focus Attack," the other new addition, is a modified form of the game's existing Focus Attack system. Whereas regular Focus Attacks can absorb the damage from a single attack, Red Focus Attacks can absorb damage from multiple attacks, at the cost of Super Meter. Beyond the fact that Red Focus Attacks can still be dash cancelled, however, no further information was provided with regards to how a Red Focus Attack is executed, or how much meter the technique costs.

The Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collection has Hadouken'd its hefty $150 price point, and is now available for $80 through the Capcom Store. That's a savings of almost 50 percent, and $20 cheaper than last time the set was on sale, which calls for a theme. A theme that goes with everything, perhaps. This is the same collection as when it was first announced, meaning you'll get Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Online Edition and Street Fighter X Tekken when you pick up the collection for Xbox 360, or all of the above plus all three Street Fighter Alpha titles should you opt for the PS3 version. The Capcom Store also advertises all costume DLC for SSF4 Arcade and all character and Swap Costume DLC for Street Fighter x Tekken, but it doesn't seem that "all" includes DLC released or announced after the collection's debut. The set includes an 11-disc soundtrack, a 64-page art boook, the I Am Street Fighter documentary, all episodes of the Street Fighter anime, and Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie. You'll also be able to display a certificate of authenticity, a light-up Ryu statue, or even the iconic fighter's belt, proudly in your dojo.

8 Bit Studios describes its new MOBA, Skara: The Blade Remains, as "an experience with the action of Street Fighter inside a story and land like World of Warcraft, all blended into a fast-paced Call of Duty style arena." If you're not sure what that looks like in action, well, neither are we. Luckily for our strained imaginations, 8 Bit has just released its first Skara gameplay trailer. The video showcases some of the title's arena combat, with the 8 Bit team noting that this trailer reflects the status of the game after around five months of development. With 19 days and £135,000 ($200,000-ish) to go on its Kickstarter campaign, Skara has a ways to go before reaching its funding goal. Check out the trailer after the break. While Capcom gave its blessing to Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, it would seem the series needs financing before it can be completed. A Kickstarter campaign for the live-action series has launched and is seeking £625,000 (around $950,000), for a planned debut this coming winter. The Kickstarter campaign is of note because these guys produced quite arguably the best three minutes of live-action Street Fighter footage on the planet with their fan-film, Street Fighter: Legacy. As with any Kickstarter campaign, there are several different tiers – like the crazy £5,000 level, which guarantees you Ryu, Ken, Akuma or Gouken's sweaty costume once filming has completed, or a chance to hang out during the filming of an episode.

Street Fighter X Mega Man's superb chiptune soundtrack is now available on Bandcamp, complimenting yesterday's release of the game. Composed by San Francisco-based electronic music producer A_Rival, the 22-track album fuses Mega Man's sonic sensibilities with classic pieces of orchestration from Street Fighter's past. The soundtrack, which includes character themes and scores from the game's various menus, is being sold through Bandcamp's name-your-own-price model with a minimum price of $0.00. So, hypothetically, this could either be the cheapest or most expensive piece of music you've ever purchased. Regardless of which end of that spectrum you feel is most appropriate, at least do yourself the favor of downloading these sweet, chippy jams.

The friendly rivalry between Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada and former Street Fighter mastermind Yoshinori Ono is a long and storied one, though we've always suspected that, were their powers to ever truly combine, the fighting world would never be the same.As it turns out, it'd likely be the carpet in the Namco Bandai offices that never recovered: "I think he would be a positive asset to the company and on that front we definitely would want to hire him," Harada told us during a pre-Tokyo Game Show event earlier this week, after we asked if Ono would have a future at Namco Bandai, should the need ever arise."But personally working with him, I don't think we'd get very far in our jobs because we'd be too busy playing pranks on each other and putting animal turds around each other's desks. I think work would slow down a great deal if we worked together."

We've always assumed, given there's a version for just about everything, that Street Fighter Monopoly already existed. Then we were wrong, but now we are right. Yes, 'Monopoly: Street Fighter Collector's Edition' is now available on Amazon at a RRP for $39.99.The tokens are Chun-Li's bracelet, Vega's mask, a Hadouken, M.Bison, Blanka, Ryu, and Zangief's tiny red shorts. Alright, we made that last one up, but we had to highlight the oversight. As for the properties, while they're set to locations like 'Japanese Bathhouse' and 'China Marketplace,' in reality we reckon they're ordered by the character portraits on them. So, M. Bison and Gouken are the dark blues, which we suppose makes sense. Although there must be a case for Ryu (yellows) and Ken (reds) being the most valuable. Mind you, we're just happy they included everyone's favorite boxing gentleman, Dudley (light blues).

Excellent news for that one guy making a Street Fighter X Tekken stop-motion animation film based on the one fanfic he wrote, as well as regular people with cubicles that need decorating: Diamond Select Toys will be releasing two new series of SFxT Minimates figures, with the first wave arriving in November.Regardless of which wave they're in, characters come in fixed packs of two: Ken vs. Steve, Cammy vs. Nina, Poison vs. Lili and Sagat vs. King (above) make up November's offering. Wave two, said to release sometime in February, pits Chun-Li vs. Hwoarang, Abel vs. Kazuya, Ryu vs. Yoshimitsu and Rufus vs. Julia, all of whom can be seen after the break. No word on pricing, but we do know that some pairs will be more rare than others.

Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono is helping out Dontnod Entertainment with the development of Remember Me, the cyberpunk action game Capcom announced at Gamescom last week.Ono has visited the Dontnod studio in Paris to offer his advice, Capcom senior producer Mat Hart tells Eurogamer. "He's my boss and he and I speak very regularly about the game, and he's come out with me to Paris," Hart says. "He knows the team and knows the game very well. I always benefit from his wisdom when I'm chatting to him about how we're progressing."Hart compares Capcom's relationship with Dontnod to the one it has with DmC: Devil May Cry developer Ninja Theory, describing it as a "collaboration," rather than the "old-fashioned approach of being adversarial."Remember Me uses combo-based combat with finishing moves and dodges, and special moves that are unlocked by progressing through the game, activated with a power wheel. "On top of that will come much more depth, as well," Hart says. "That we'll talk about later."

  • Capcom and iam8bit remember 25 Years of Street Fighter with art gallery

    08.04.2012

Last night in iam8bit's Los Angeles headquarters, Capcom opened up its 25 Years of Street Fighter show, revealing a full gallery of artists' work featuring the now classic fighting game characters and settings. In a launch event open to the public, visitors got to see (and buy) the art on display, take pictures in front of a Street Fighter background, and even smash up a car pinata in a tribute to the games' Bonus Round mechanic. Gabe Swarr was one of the artists in attendance last night - his piece in the show, a comic from his Life in the Analog Age series, was a little more personal than all of the various representations of Chun Li, Ryu, and Blanka. In it, he portrays the change that Street Fighter brought to the arcades when it debuted, from sillier games featuring monkeys and spaceships to fire punches and spinning kicks. "Right when Street Fighter started there were two different crowds at that point," says Swarr, "and I wanted to remember that shift in the arcades." Swarr says that Street Fighter as a brand has lasted so long because its characters were so identifiable. Not only are these archetypal characters easy to connect to, but "it's also an international thing," he says. "It's one of the first games where they say this guy's from Brazil, this guy's from Japan and this guy's from the US. They did a really great job of incorporating that into the game." "You could tell that that was like the basis for all the fighting games afterwards," Swarr says. "This was the template that everyone followed." Capcom's 25 Years of Street Fighter show is running at iam8bit through August 19. You can see what's on display there in the gallery below.%Gallery-161786%

The iam8bit art gallery/collective in Los Angeles' Echo Park is teaming up with Capcom for a "25 Years of Street Fighter" gallery show. "Combo Attack" is a two-week exhibition of art of over 50 pieces celebrating the classic fighting game series, featuring different artists' takes on characters, backgrounds, and other media from the long history of Street Fighter. The show is kicking off with a free-to-the-public opening night party on August 3 at 7pm. It will have art pieces on display, and feature a real-life Street Fighter 2 "bonus round" (a car to wreck, we'd guess), and several other special installations. The art itself will be up in the iam8bit gallery through August 19, so even if you can't make opening night we're sure Jon Gibson and gang would appreciate you stopping by.

The Chun Li Hello Kitty plushies available at Comic-Con last weekend were sold out by Saturday morning, but there is still hope for the thousands of remaining fans clamoring to get their hands on one. The Hello Kitty Ryu, M. Bison and Chun Li plushies pictured in their Comic-Con display above are soon coming to "as many stores as we can get them into," a Capcom booth employee told us. He mentioned specifically Hot Topic, Sanrio stores and Toys 'R' Us as possiblities for the plushies, which are "Series 1" in a planned line of Hello Kitty X Street Fighter toys.
