Because it was such a good idea the first couple of times, the powers that be (in this case, Capcom itself) have decided that the world is ready for a third official attempt at a live-action anything set in the Street Fighter universe.Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist is a forthcoming live-action series (presumably web series) from Capcom and Assassin's Fist Limited, a production company composed of the core team responsible for the live-action Street Fighter: Legacy fan film. The show will follow Ken and Ryu's formative years as they study under the tutelage of Gouken, master of a modified version of Ansatsuken martial arts. At some point we expect Akuma to show up and shout "Messatsu!"The script will be penned by Christian Howard (Ken in Street Fighter: Legacy) and director Joey Ansah. Global release is expected sometime in 2013.

The PlayStation Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken will be punching bears all over North America on October 23, according to Capcom Unity. Purchasing the game unlocks those 12 characters on the PS3 version, and though Japan receives both retail and digital copies on October 25 there has been no confirmation of a PSN release in the US.Street Fighter X Tekken's myriad of Vita-centric capabilities were also expounded upon today by a blitzkrieg of new videos, as seen above and beyond the veil. Near functionality has been added, allowing players to wirelessly trade custom costume color combinations when randomly in proximity. Ad-hoc multiplayer is supported for up to four players at once, and the Vita's camera can even be used to take pictures of characters doing Street Fightery stuff on your kitchen table.%Gallery-160181%

  • 3 windwalker monk abilities that channel classic fighting games

    by

    04.23.2012

One of the key themes being presented with the new monk class is arcade brawlers, and the new windwalker specialization delivers this in spades. I spent my youth getting rocked by Sagat in Street Fighter II on the SNES, and I've enjoyed the genre ever since. From my time on the beta with windwalkers, here are three abilities that immediately evoke my childhood. Sorry, brewmasters and mistweavers; these abilities are only for those of us who can kick back and knuckle up. Flying Serpent Kick Josh Myers touched on this in his earlier article on monk abilities, but remember Liu Kang's signature flying kick from Mortal Kombat? It's here, and it's every bit as awesome now as it was then. Hit Flying Serpent Kick, and your windwalker takes off at what appears to be epic mount speed, which lasts for several seconds (about 100 yards of travel). Click again and he lands, damaging and slowing anything in the area. This doesn't hit overly hard, but combined with Roll, it's amazing maneuverability around the battlefield. I used to call feral druids the fastest spec on the battlefield, but not anymore. Forget Heroic Leap; this is now my favorite ability in the game.

  • Tekken producer Harada: No DLC characters for us

Capcom's been explaining itself over the on-disc DLC that came with Street Fighter x Tekken, but Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada said there will be no such problem with his side of the franchise. Because, you see, he told Edge that no Tekken game will ever have DLC characters at all. That's quite a pronouncement. He clarified that he doesn't have a problem with Capcom doing it, noting that their motives may be different from his. But Harada sees, he said, "the characters and their move sets as chess pieces – they are essential items necessary in the game and we would never sell any of those individually."That doesn't rule out DLC completely, as Harada added that vanity items that might be added to the game after the fact would likely come with a charge. Characters might also be added to a Tekken game in advance as pre-order incentives, as long as they could eventually be unlocked by all players in the game. But as for after-the-fact characters, you won't find any of those in Tekken x Street Fighter if Harada has his way.

Yes, these cute little bobble-headed cubicle companions are completely adorable, but that doesn't mean they've forgotten how important it is to maintain a gruff, battle-ready demeanor. Well, except for Chun-Li. She looks pretty pleased with her chibi characterization as a tiny plastic plaything.Landing sometime next month, Series 1 of Bobble Budds' Street Fighter line includes Blanka, Sagat, Ryu and Chun-Li, and can be pre-ordered as a $39.96 set from State of the Art Toys. The budds will also be available at the Capcom Store and other "selected online retailers" once they launch.%Gallery-150729%

  • Asura's Wrath DLC isn't kidding about this 'anime-inspired' stuff

Asura's Wrath is out today, which can mean only one thing -- the announcement of DLC. Capcom said Asura's Wrath will be getting several "substantial" DLC packs, two of which are "anime-inspired" episodes that will provide insight into the main game's story. We think Capcom is being humble here; not only do these particular installments look to be inspired by anime, they're rendered in full-blown, traditional Japanese-cartoon style. We caught wind previously of another DLC installment involving a Street Fighter/Asura's Wrath crossover, and Capcom confirmed players will get to battle Ryu and as-yet unannounced Street Fighter characters, in classic, non-anime 3D. No word yet on release dates or pricing.Check out the "DLC-inspired" screens below:%Gallery-148117%

The Ver. 2012 balance update for Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition has been available on consoles and in arcades since early December. PC fighters have had to make due with vanilla SSF4AE and all of the problems that came with it. Thankfully, it looks like a solution is right around the corner. Better late than never, right? Capcom hopes to have the Ver. 2012 update ready for the PC version of SSF4AE by the end of February, according to an announcement made on Capcom Unity by a dog in a wig. Further information will be announced "in the coming weeks," so we'll just have to wait; something PC fighting game fans have become quite accustomed to over the years.

Can you ever get enough 25th anniversary logos for Capcom properties? We hope not, because here's another one. The first Street Fighter (the one nobody played) came out in 1987, and Capcom is planning some kind of "international celebration" to mark the big anniversary. Think about that for a second -- the Street Fighter and Mega Man franchises started in the same year. The publisher has yet to announce details of the celebration, but of course the release of Street Fighter X Tekken will be part of it by default. We feel pretty safe in assuming it'll be accompanied by a few more Street Fighter games.

The Android OS version of Street Fighter IV we originally caught wind of back in September is now Street Fighter IV HD. As per the original announcement, the game will initially be exclusive to the LG Spectrum, which launches on Verizon January 19. After LG's limited exclusivity blackout expires, however, Street Fighter IV HD will hit the US Android Marketplace in May for $12.99. A Wifi-enabled VS. mode allows for local multiplayer, although it's unclear whether wireless VS. will require two of the same handsets. Also no word yet on system requirements for non-LG devices, although since the Spectrum is launching with Gingerbread and not Ice-Cream Sandwich, any dual-core Android device seems like a good bet.

The cross-over character cavalcade of fun that is Street Fighter X Tekken continues to hemorrhage new fighters, albeit this time the announcement is somewhat less flashy (and far more unintentional) than previous roster reveals. A new screenshot uploaded to SFXT's Xbox Live Marketplace page, upon close inspection, shows the portraits of Iron Fist veteran Ling Xiaoyu and Shadowloo head honcho M. Bison, as seen in the zoomed and enhanced image above. This brings the game's character stable to an even 30 fighters, PS3/Vita exclusive peeps not included. We're excited about the prospect of psycho-crushing our foes once again, but we also can't help but be disappointed by SFXT's severe lack of snake-arm minotaurs and farting dinosaurs.

  • Dimps expanding into original IPs for mobile and social platforms

    by

    12.17.2011

Takashi Nishiyama has been in the game for about as long as "the game" has existed. Responsible for Moon Patrol, Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, the Neo Geo and more Sonic games than you can shake a stick at, Nishiyama's design portfolio spans 30 years and includes some of the most fundamental design philosophies that still serve as a foundation for many genres to this day. His company, Dimps, has made a name for itself developing titles for other publishers' IPs; Dragon Ball Z, Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter, etc. After nearly twelve years of development-for-hire work, however, Dimps is looking to branch out and create its own original IPs, according to statements made by Nishiyama during an interview with 1UP. "I feel that it's time that we need to create our own social and browser IPs," Nishiyama said. "We're going to start with things that have more manageable budgets, like social and browser games. I believe that's more realistic." Nishiyama sees mobile platforms as a lower-risk entry platform for a new IP, as compared with the astronomical costs associated with console game development. His company must be cautious, however, because creating original IPs will position Dimps as competition to publishers, rather than a developmental ally: "As soon as we announce that we're creating original IP, we become their competitor. So we need to approach it carefully and be sensitive to the politics involved."

Details are slim at this point, but Capcom Unity announced yesterday that the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version of Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers will be coming to Nintendo's Virtual Console ecosystem sometime in the future. No word on pricing or availability, but we do know that the port will feature online play, which, believe it or not, actually existed in the original release in the form of XBAND compatibility. If you're not old enough to remember XBAND, you're probably not old enough to be excited about one of the many variants of Street Fighter 2 being re-released. If you are old enough to remember XBAND, we hope you can find time between refinancing your mortgage and picking the kids up from band practice to go a few rounds.

  • Seth Killian clarifies Street Fighter x Tekken's controversial Gem System

It may sound like a dull hum from all the way over there in Outworld, but the Street Fighter community has been a noisy, combative warzone lately, and not in a good way. See, ever since Capcom outlined Street Fighter X Tekken's Gem System, Street Fighter devotees (and competitive fighters in general) have been conducting heated debates over the system's merits, drawbacks and implications for serious tournament play, as well as the impact it will have on the casual fighting community. Seth Killian, Capcom Community Manager and face of all things Street Fighter in North America, chatted with Gamasutra to expound upon some of the Gem System's intricacies and the design philosophy behind it. First and foremost, Killian stressed that the system has been part of SFxT's design philosophy for years, and that it represents the proverbial "nerd feather" that intrigues analytical theorycraft-style gamers.

If you're a fan of arcade-style fighting games, you're surely hip to MadCatz's FightStick Tournament Edition for PS3 and Xbox 360. As it's done with Street Fighter in the past, the company is back with another variation of the arcade stick, this time officially themed for the upcoming Soul Calibur V. Launching near the game in January 2012, the Soul Calibur V Arcade FightStick Soul Edition features the usual masher-friendly eight button with joystick layout, but sports a casing endowed with visuals inspired by the game -- and an extremely unfortunate mix of hues. The crazy Cat hasn't announced a price yet, but considering these have gone for about $150 in the past, we'd imagine this one won't be too far off. Full details in the press release after the break.

  • New Street Fighter X Tekken trailers tease Dan, Mecha Zangief and others

"But wait," you might be thinking. "Isn't Dan Hibiki, founder of the Saikyo-ryu school of martial arts and proprieter of the Saikyo Dojo deceased? Wasn't he killed during the Street Fighter X Tekken announcement at E3?" Quite right, intrepid fighting fan! Our understanding of the situation has been much the same, and yet the long, luxurious ponytail and pink gi seen in the above trailer are unmistakably Hibiki. It appears as though Capcom has taken to teasing multiple characters per trailer, however, as some of those body parts also look distinctively Juri-esque. Punch through the break for two more teasers, one of which flashes some undeniably Mecha Zangief goodness. Keep in mind that just because a character is identified in one of these videos, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be playable in-game. Mecha Zangief has already been spotted in the background of at least one SFXT stage, so only time will tell.

  • Street Fighter IV coming to Android, exclusive to LG (at first)

    09.19.2011

In what basically amounts to a 3-hit news shoryuken, LG and Capcom have announced that a mobile version of Street Fighter IV will fight its way onto Google's Android OS sometime in Q4 (Hit 1), and that the title will be exclusive to an upcoming LG smartphone (Hit 2), but only for the first three months (KO!). No pricing or release information has been given beyond the Q4 window, and LG has yet to announce which of its smartphones will receive the title. The press release refers to the manufacturer's "first HD Android smartphone," however, pegging the LU6200 as the prime suspect. No word on whether or not this is a direct port of the iOS version of Street Fighter IV, but the LU6200's slate form factor would easily facilitate the title. Once we know more about Street Fighter IV's system requirements, we'll have a better idea of which phones will be able to run the fighter once the exclusivity agreement has run its course. For now though, all we can do is cross our fingers and think button-y thoughts.

During TGS, Capcom revealed Street Fighter X Tekken's "Pandora Mode," which allows players to sacrifice a character in order to give the tag partner infinite EX meter before also dying, allowing for last-ditch comeback efforts. Curious about the motivation for this kind of crazy mode, I asked producer Yoshinori Ono, who then proceeded to take me to school about the differences in flow between Street Fighter and Tekken games.

For as good as they are with revenge, salvation and murder, it's far rarer to find video games that delve into the intricacies of love and human reproduction. After watching the above short from Game Boyardee, we've realized that might not be such a bad thing.
