  • Tatsunoko vs. Capcom won't leave Wii, sales could spur sequel

Capcom has squashed the dreams of those hopeful its newest cross-over fighter, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, will come to PS3 and/or Xbox 360. Speaking to VideoGamer.com, the game's producer, Ryota Niitsuma, stated that the effort required to port the heavily Wii-optimized title would be considerable. "If we were to port it to PS3 or Xbox 360 we would have to make the game from scratch, and in that case we might as well just make a sequel of the series on those consoles rather than porting it," he told the site. Not confirmation of a sequel, but a promising comment nonetheless. Niitsuma said that "we would like to see the reaction of the western market when we release the game on Wii," with regard to bringing the series to other platforms. Since Niitsuma wouldn't say it himself, we'll go ahead and do it for him: "Buy the first one if you want to see a sequel." See, that wasn't so hard.

The Nintendo Channel receives another helping of E3 interviews this week, highlighting big Wii titles such as Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Rabbids Go Home, and, the feel-good story of the year, Tatsunoko vs Capcom. We're pumped for the we-never-saw-it-coming localization. How about you?%Gallery-32421%

  • So who are these 'Tatsunoko' characters anyway?

One major issue with marketing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom in North America is that nobody but old-school otaku knows who the hell half of the characters are. It took a few months of watching matches on YouTube to realize that all the Tatsunoko characters looked really fun in gameplay, but the name recognition wasn't there for us like it is in Japan, where Tatsunoko Production anime is an institution.Seemingly in an attempt to combat that handicap, at least among the hardcore blog-reading audience, Capcom Unity has started a series of posts introducing the characters. The first, "Dragon vs. Eagle," provides a fairly detailed bio of Gatchaman's Ken the Eagle, with background about the character and the Gatchaman show, and supplementary video clips. There's also a bio of Ryu, but everyone knows Ryu: torn sleeves, headband, likes fighting.%Gallery-32421%

Update: Capcom sent out a release the following day, redacting the mention of online play and five new characters. Did someone at Capcom jump the gun?The release of Tatsunoko vs Capcom in North America will change a bit from its Japanese counterpart, Capcom has announced. The North American release eliminates one character from the Tatsunoko side of the roster and adds five new fighters not found in the original game. Not only that, but the North American version of the game will also have online play, a feature the original Japanese release cannot boast.[Thanks, WiiNinja!]

Click image to eagle-eye size When we caught our first glimpse of the I Am 8-bit shirt, we were on a mission to hunt down one of these shirts and get a glimpse at the back of it, and the wait has been worth it. Covered in a ridiculous amount of both gold glitter and Ken the Eagle, this shirt would be the pride and joy of anyone who owns it. Luckily, our own JC was able to defeat the mighty Seth at Capcom in a round of Tatsunoko vs Capcom, so we have one of these bad boys. Which, obviously, means one of you will soon own it, even though it pains us to the core to part with such an awesome piece of apparel.%Gallery-32421%

The localization of Tatsunoko vs Capcom is pretty awesome, no doubt about it. And to celebrate such a great success on Capcom's part, the company has teamed with I Am 8-bit to produce the shirt you see above, available in very limited quantities at Capcom's E3 booth for "VIPs and Unity visitors." On the back of the shirt, Capcom Unity notes that a similar silhouetted version of Ken the Eagle from Science Ninja Team Gatchaman is present, though the blog failed to get a snapshot of that.

  • Tatsunoko vs. Capcom roster may change for North American release

GameSpot's preview for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars contains some rather troubling news about the localized version of Eighting's cross-company fighter. According to the site, "talks are ongoing," but Capcom may not have been able to secure all the rights to the Tatsunoko characters. As a result, there "may be some minor pruning done to the Tatsunoko side of the roster."It's not all bad, though: GameSpot said that Capcom is working to keep the roster balanced for the updated version, "so any pruning done will require some addition to keep things balanced." Maybe Capcom can grab 3D models of random Capcom characters and stick the missing Tatsunoko characters' movesets in. Or maybe whoever the last holdout is on the Tatsunoko side will realize that there's really not anything else going on in North America with these characters.%Gallery-32421%

That totally convincing-looking Nintendo Power scan did not lie! Capcom just admitted, via its Twitter account, that Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is, in fact, being localized for a North American release. The terse (it is Twitter, after all) announcement: "cat is officially out of the bag on Capcom Mystery Game #1," followed by a link to the scan. The announcement was also made on the Capcom Unity blog. That means there's one more "Mystery Game" left in Capcom's E3 lineup. Honestly, it could just be a second demo station for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and we would be perfectly happy. Maybe we shouldn't admit that.[Image via Japanese Tatsunoko vs. Capcom website]

The latest issue of Nintendo Power is reporting that Capcom's other crossover fighter, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, is coming Stateside. According to scans of the issue (via NeoGAF), Nintendo Power claims the fighter -- which Capcom has said (on numerous occasions) it was attempting to bring to North America -- is headed to American shores. For the uninformed, Tatsunoko vs Capcom is a fighting game for the Nintendo Wii -- currently available only in Japan -- that pits characters from Capcom's vast library versus characters from the Japanese animation studio, Tatsunoko Production. Joystiq has contacted Capcom for a comment.[Via GoNintendo. Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Capcom: Marvel vs. Capcom 3 'not part of deal' to re-release MvC2

If you're thinking the pending digital release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is any indication that the path is clear for "Marvel vs. Capcom 3," think again. "The short answer is no, that's not any part of this deal," Capcom's Seth Killian lamented to Joystiq at a media event yesterday. "What we're hoping is that if people get really juiced about this title, and we can show Marvel that there's a lot of heat behind this, then they'll open up the door for us to do something with '3,' which is something we'd love to do." For now, licensing issues are preventing further developments. The same is true for a North American release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. "It's a lot of 'dance with the lawyers' on that one," explained Killian. "The rights holders for Tatsunoko in Japan are one company, but in the U.S. it's ... 13 companies -- and some are very attentive and some are not." So if you've been holding your breath for this one, you might want to consider coming up for air.Killian also told Joystiq that Capcom is considering releasing Marvel vs. Capcom 2-branded arcade sticks (à la the popular SFIV controllers). "It's a discussion ... we would love to make it happen. If you saw the 'leak' of those MadCatz sticks, that was actually B.S. That was a complete fabrication, but it's something we would love to do."%Gallery-51288%

Starting to feel like your North American Wii will never get a chance to spin Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes? Capcom says, "keep hope alive!" Capcom's Seth "S-Kill" Killian recently posted footage (found after the break) of a Ranking Battle final at Simi Valley's Denjin Arcade on the Unity blog, telling fans that the company is still looking for a way to bring the mixed-character fighter to North American shores. The post reaffirms comments made earlier this month by Capcom's bizdev and strategic planning VP, Christian Svensson, who said Capcom was "actively working" to get the game Stateside. However, nothing is set in stone and it still may never happen. So, who's starting the online petition?%Gallery-32421%

  • Capcom: Don't count out a US Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Capcom's US branch is keeping hope alive for a Western release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes, the Versus fighter featuring Capcom faves and Tatsunoko creations including Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. (Yes: Science. Ninja. Team.)Christian Svensson, Capcom's bizdev and strategic planning VP, told VideoGamer.com, "Do not rule [a Western release] out. That is all I can say right now," adding, "We are still actively working on having that happen. I can't say it's happening definitively. I couldn't give you a time frame, but as badly as the fans want it, we want to bring it."According to Svensson, a combination of licensing issues and reassembling the dev team at Eighting to make any necessary changes are the major hurdles. "The Tatsunoko rights are split as far as how they are held in the west," he explained. "Tatsunoko obviously holds all of the rights in Japan so they can grant all of those characters usage through Japan very easily.""To be fair, the team that did it is working on something else now," Svensson added, "so actually also clawing back the resources to do a localised version, to make any changes that are needed to get through those licensing issues, these are all things that need to be aligned before we can actually profit from this happening."%Gallery-32421%

Looks like we have a new BFF, even if they don't know it yet. As you can see in the image to the right, the cabinet is set to play Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (running off a Wii), which is one of the games we'd most like to import but it costs like a bajillion dollars so we can't. Apparently, these cabinets are just sitting in somebody's kitchen, in Brooklyn. Uh, what does a blog need to do to get an invite? We're already making you famous to our 32 readers with this post. Hook a blog up, already! We totally own a car.In all seriousness, though, we're really jealous of how awesome that kitchen is. %Gallery-32421%[Via NeoGAF]

Capcom has been on a roll this generation. First we got games like Dead Rising and Lost Planet which launched strong new IPs. Then the announcements started to hit. An Okami port for the Wii. Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop. Resident Evil 5 (which, judging by its recent demo, seems to be shaping up nicely). Street Fighter 4. Mega Man 9. Granted, not all of those games are making their way to the Wii, but on the whole they represent good times for gamers. Does it really get much better than that? Maybe it does.As if the decade-in-the-making Street Fighter 4 wasn't enough to reinvigorate Capcom's fighting game base, the company decided to once again visit its vs. series with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Just launched in Japan, the new fighter already has adventurous message boarders and bloggers scrambling for imports and Twilight hacks, while the rest of us pray nightly for the miracle of resolved licensing issues and a domestic release. In the spirit of Wii gamers in the land of the rising sun playing the gorgeous Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, this week Born for Wii aims to celebrate with a look back at what may be the most legendary game in the vs. series -- Marvel vs. Capcom 2. #ninbutton { border-style: solid; border-color: #000; border-width: 2px; background-color: #BBB; color: #000; text-decoration: none; width: 100px; text-align: center; padding: 2px 2px 2px 2px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 2px; } .buttontext { color: #000; text-decoration: none; font: bold 14pt Helvetica; } #ninbutton:hover { text-decoration: none; color: #BBB; background-color: #000; } NEXT >> %Gallery-39415% Every week, Born for Wii digs into gaming's sordid past to unearth a new treasure fit for revival on the Nintendo Wii. While some of us are hesitant to commit to Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (not because of questions of game quality, but for financial reasons, and concern for the safety of our Wiis), we are quite certain that some of you either totally imported it, or live in Japan and just bought it. And we are jealous. We're getting by for now on YouTube combo demonstration videos, but it's tough going. If you're now a proud owner of a fighting game about obscure Japanese television characters, let us know! Was this your first time importing? If you're like us, you won't let a little thing like a language barrier stop you from importing what is sure to be the fighting game of the year. So, instead of trying to navigate the abundance of Japanese text and all of the menus, or simply just trying different moves with each character in-game, you can simply print out these handy little cards with each character's moves listed on them, allowing you to safely try out each fighter and avoid the frustration of just winging it with each individual in the game. It's a pretty great resource with a lot of info condensed into one place. If you plan on importing Tatsunoko vs Capcom, then you should definitely check this out.%Gallery-32421%Source - Move list sheets (zip file)
