'Warcraft' among Universal's first Ultra HD Blu-ray offerings
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment detailed its list of Ultra HD Blu-ray releases scheduled this summer, and it's just the tip of the iceberg for 4K home video collectors. Beginning with Warcraft, Jason Bourne, and The Huntsman: Winter's War, more than 100 titles will be available by the end of the year for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and digital formats. Each title will be mastered in Dolby Vision as well, with HDR and brighter colors across digital and physical releases.
Nintendo teases 'Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins' animated film
This week, Star Fox Zero will finally make its debut on the Wii U, after being delayed last year. In celebration of that, Nintendo created an animated short called Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins. The film was produced in collaboration with none other than Shigeru Miyamoto, as well as Production IG and WIT Studios. Its world premiere is streaming live on Wednesday, April 20th, just a couple days before the game hits Nintendo's latest console. In the meantime, enjoy the trailer, which features cameos from all your favorite members of the Star Fox squad.
'The Last of Us' and 'Uncharted' movies could be in trouble
The Last of Us and the Uncharted series are known for their cinematic feel and spectacular set pieces, so it's not surprising that Hollywood wants to adapt them for the big screen. If you're sold on the idea of a live-action search for El Dorado, or a painstaking journey across a Clicker-infested America, we've got some bad news however. In an interview with IGN, Neil Druckmann, creative director at Naughty Dog, hinted that both projects are in trouble. Regarding a movie version of The Last of Us, he said:
'Final Fantasy XV' is getting a movie and an anime series
You like Final Fantasy, right? Well get ready for a surfeit of entertainment options as Square Enix is serving up not only an anime series, but also a movie alongside the almost decade-old (still not here!) Final Fantasy XV. While the movie will be released digitally later this year, the anime will start streaming today, tonight, on YouTube -- and it's entirely free.
Sonic to star in a 'live-action and animation hybrid' movie
If you've played the most recent Sonic the Hedgehog games, you might be wondering how life can get any worse for the blue blur. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was universally panned by the press, and previous efforts such as Lost World and Unleashed didn't fare much better. How could his reputation be dragged any lower? Well, perhaps with a film. Not just any film though -- a worrying "live-action and animation hybrid." The project, which is currently still in the planning stages, was revealed by Sega president and CEO Hajime Satomi in an interview with The Worldfolio.
'Dragons Lair' movie project leaves Kickstarter, heads to Indiegogo
Don't worry, Dragon's Lair fans, the proposed feature-length project is still happening -- but it won't be raising money on Kickstarter. Creators Don Bluth and Gary Goldman have cancelled their original crowdfunding campaign and will be relaunching it on Indiegogo on December 1. They promise it'll be "a stronger, more valiant campaign" that takes into account suggestions from fans. One big advantage Indiegogo has over Kickstarter is "Flexible Funding," which lets crowdfunding organizers keep the money they raise, even if they don't reach their goal. The pair aimed to raise $550,000 to produce a short to court investors and studios, who would hopefully back a feature-length Dragon's Lair film (which ultimately could cost upwards of $100 million). They ended up raising over $241,000 in one month before nixing the Kickstarter campaign. I can't blame them for aiming high, but honestly I'd settle for a lower-budget film backed by the likes of Netflix or Amazon.
'The Witcher' will be a movie in 2017
The Witcher is perhaps best known as a video game series, but its roots travel deeper than the digital realm. The Witcher games are based on a long-running series of novels and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, and these tales are being turned into a film, due to premiere in 2017. The movie will pull from themes in The Witcher and Lesser Evil, two stories in Sapkowski's collection The Last Wish, which was originally published in 1993; an English version hit the market in 2007. The Sean Daniel Company (the studio that produced The Mummy franchise) is teaming up with Platige Films on the project, alongside Oscar-nominated director of The Cathedral, Tomasz Bagiński. It's planned to be a series, assuming audiences are appropriately charmed by the leading, supernaturally powered man, Geralt. He's fairly bewitching, or so we've heard.
A sheep steals the show in the new 'Ratchet & Clank' movie trailer
Look at that sheep. Just look at it. Adorable, confused and fluffy -- a trifecta of cute cuddliness. Ratchet and Clank each come close, but it's really no contest. Sorry, guys. Ratchet & Clank is set to invade the silver screen on April 29, 2016, and today in a new trailer, we get a closer look at the movie's sense of humor. Unsurprisingly (or for the cynics among us, very surprisingly), it feels a lot like the Ratchet & Clank games -- silly, action-packed and full of wild alien creatures. The film stars series veterans James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet and David Kaye as Clank, alongside Paul Giamatti, Rosario Dawson, John Goodman and Sylvester Stallone. In related news, the remastered and expanded PlayStation 4 version of Ratchet & Clank is due in spring 2016, alongside the film's release.
'Hunger Games,' 'Twilight' studio is doing a 'Borderlands' movie
Lionsgate and two long-time Marvel producers are working on a Borderlands movie and, no, it's not called Mad Max. Lionsgate is the production company behind Twilight, The Hunger Games, Ender's Game, Warm Bodies and tons of other mainstream flicks, while producers Ari and Avi Arad have worked on the Iron Man, X-Men, Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man franchises. Borderlands is a massively popular sci-fi action series that debuted in 2009 under the direction of Gearbox Software and Take-Two Interactive. It takes place on Pandora, an abandoned mining planet, and the games involve crass humor, alien beasts, a class-based RPG system a ridiculous number of guns (16 million, in fact).
'Mega Man' creator wants your help making a game-and-movie combo
Mighty No. 9 might not even be out the door, but Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune is already looking for your help with a new project -- and this one is considerably more ambitious. His studio has launched crowdfunding for Red Ash, a project that combines both an open world action game (The Indelible Legend) and an anime movie from Studio4ºC (Magicicada). While both will share familiar characters and the theme of treasure hunting in a robot apocalypse, they'll otherwise be set in "parallel worlds" where the producers are free to tell whatever stories they want.
