London has fallen. At least, that’s what you’re told when you first visit the dystopian future of England’s capital city in Legion, the third instalment of Ubisoft’s action-adventure series Watch Dogs. Navigating the underground corridors of the Houses of Parliament as an MI-5 agent in the game’s prologue, you quickly understand that DedSec — the subversive hacking group at the center of Watch Dogs 2 — has been framed for a series of horrific bombings at major cultural and tourist spots around London by a mysterious and technologically-advanced group called “Zero-Day” (Ubisoft loves a trope).

Ubisoft is planning animated shows based on ‘Watch Dogs’ and ‘Far Cry’

Ubisoft is no stranger to TV and movies. Its media division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, has created four seasons of Rabbids Invasion thus far, and produced the mediocre adaptation of Assassin's Creed. That's not to mention films like Uwe Boll's Far Cry and the controversial Prince of Persia, which were licensed from the publisher. The company is focusing on the small screen for now though, and hopes to reach kids and young adults. The animated series will be comprised of adaptations from titles like Watch Dogs and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Playing as many Londoners in 'Watch Dogs: Legion'

In most stories, there's a hero. Someone you can root for, empathize with, trust to guide you through their journey's twists and turns. In major game studio AAA action franchises, especially so. Watch Dogs: Legion -- the upcoming third game in the open world hacker series, arriving March 6th 2020 -- does away with all that. From a sprawling, dystopian London you can recruit anyone that you want to be your protagonist to hacking collective DedSec.

'Watch Dogs: Legion' arrives March 2020

A dark, post-Brexit London will be the setting for Watch Dogs: Legion, the third game in the open world action franchise. At Ubisoft's E3 keynote, the publisher showed that the latest hacker title will launch March 6th 2020. The game's most interesting new hook is that there is no central protagonist. The game has you building an underground resistance of hackers, and players will recruit their team from any of the pedestrians strolling around London.

Ubisoft has confirmed reports about the next entry in its open world hacker franchise. It is entitled Watch Dogs Legion, the developer has confirmed in a tweet that also contains a short teaser showing the game's logo. The company has also alluded to the other details that previously came out, particularly that the game is set in London and will allow you to play as any of the characters you recruit. "God save the NPCs," Ubisoft wrote.

The next Watch Dogs title is Legion, Kotaku has confirmed after an Amazon UK listing from Ubisoft revealed the upcoming game. It's reportedly set in London, and it'll come with a gameplay element that could give it a lot of replay value if done right. "Play as anyone," the listing for the PS4 game says. "Every individual you meet in the open world, has a full set of animations, voice over, character traits and visuals that are generated and guided by gameplay systems." In other words, you'll be able to play as the characters you recruit in the game.

There's also the discovery of a "Watch Dogs 2" character that has fully rendered sex organs for no apparent reason whatsoever. Not just another Thursday.

  • Best of the Rest: Ludwig's picks of 2014

ATTENTION: The year 2014 has concluded its temporal self-destruct sequence. If you are among the escapees, please join us in salvaging and preserving the best games from the irradiated chrono-debris. Jazzpunk Jazzpunk is likely to be misunderstood, or impossible to understand, by design. You could say explanation comes as an insult to its eccentricity. The gist of it is that you're a spy completing missions in a surreal, robot-dominated world, the kind you might dream up after dozing off in the middle of a late-night Leslie Nielsen movie marathon. And while the convoluted wordplay wouldn't feel out of place in a Zucker spoof - in Japan, for example, you're asked if you prefer kimonos or kistereos – the barbs of reality are what really make Jazzpunk stick. Take its odd vision of dystopia, which is regularly mocked through one-off minigames (like a first-person shooter dubbed ... Wedding Quake). Here, you can put on a special visor that lets you see and blast nonsensical Wi-Fi passwords as they dance in the air around you. I mean, that's weird, but ... think about it. The concept is kind of weird to begin with, right here on Earth. Taken as a form of escapism, then, Jazzpunk is silly without taking you too far from the truth.

Modern game soundtracks are nice thanks to their full orchestras and high-definition sound, and chiptune music can be a fun trip down Nostalgia Lane. While it may seem like you'd have to choose one or the other, you can have your audio-flavored cake and eat it too thanks to "The 8-bit Time Machine," a 10-track album from Italian film composer Giovanni Rotondo that seeks to give listeners 8-bit versions of modern game soundtracks, albeit with a few modern tweaks. Featuring 8-bit interpretations of themes from the likes of Destiny, Super Mario Galaxy, Battlefield 1942, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Watch Dogs as well as two original tracks, the album is currently gathering backers on crowdfunding site indiegogo. As of writing, the campaign has $1,033 raised of its $1,000 goal, with a $1,500 stretch goal to add four tracks. Rotondo is planning to release the album via iTunes, Google Play, Amazon mp3, Pandora and Spotify in January 2015. [Image: Giovanni Rotondo]

Like Gamestop, Walmart has revealed plans to host a sale prior to the annual consumerist land rush known as Black Friday. Games are sparsely represented, but those looking for new gadgets may be intrigued. In the realm of video games, the sale includes two key offers: A $400 PlayStation 4 that grants buyers a $50 gift card, and a number of "select games" priced at $30 that includes Xbox One and PlayStation 4 releases such as NBA 2K15 and Watch Dogs. If you need something to play those games on, Walmart is offering either a Sony or LG-branded 60" 1080p LED HDTV for $648 and a 40" Emerson LED HDTV for $115. If you're looking for a new tablet, you could purchase either a 16GB iPad Air 2 at $489 or a 16GB iPad Mini 3 at $389, as both items come with a gratis $100 Walmart gift card. Walmart's pre-Black Friday sale begins on November 21 and runs through November 27, after which time Walmart's Black Friday sale begins. [Image: Walmart]

  • New Nintendo eShop releases: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire

    by

In the case of Nintendo eShop's new releases this week, size does indeed matter. With just a smattering of games on Wii U, one of them a late spring PS4/Xbox One hit and another being an obscure Game Boy Advance curio, you'd think the console would be on shaky ground. Not so. It's got big, big goods. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with all its 8-player insanity and high definition glory, finally comes home. That's the good news. The bad news is that, unlike the other eShop releases this week, you'll have to wait until Friday, November 21 to play it. If you have a Nintendo 3DS, though, you can tide yourself over with plenty of other, admittedly slower fights. Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, new 3D remakes of classic GBA Pokemon games are available to download. If you absolutely need to see Charizard burn something on Thursday, they're perfect options. Poke-shenanigans are the top options on 3DS, but Wii U does have those aforementioned Smash Bros. boosters in the wings. First is the long-awaited, rumored-to-be-cancelled Watch Dogs from Ubisoft. Finally, Wii U Virtual Console gets yet another Game Boy Advance game in its library with puzzle game DK: King of Swing, wherein you swing Donkey Kong around from an overhead view. It's trickier than it sounds.

  • Watch Dogs Wii U picks up two DLC packs, still no Bad Blood

    by

The newly-released Wii U version of Ubisoft's open-Chicago hacking game Watch Dogs has spawned two DLC content packs, though neither are the meaty Bad Blood mini campaign. The first DLC pack includes the Conspiracy digital trip originally released for all of the other versions of Watch Dogs nearly six months ago. Each digital trip is a mini-game within the Watch Dogs world with Conspiracy seeing Aiden Pierce stalk killer robots that are invisible to everyone but him. The eShop also now hosts the Access Granted DLC pack, which compiles the costumes, weapons and perks first released as pre-order content for the game's other incarnations along with three exclusive contract missions. Unfortunately, as far as Watch Dogs DLC goes, these two are relatively minor and Ubisoft has publicly stated that the crown jewel of the game's additions, Bad Blood, will not be coming to the Wii U. No reason for the omission was given at that time, but it's likely because the publisher has little faith in Nintendo's console. [Image: Ubisoft]

November 18 is the new October 7. Last month's $300 day tamed before it began, as the launch of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor moved up a few days while Dragon Age: Inquisition was delayed to the industry's new busy day, today. It's okay, friends, we're here to guide you through today's retail chaos. Dragon Age: Inquisition reached Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC today, and was received well in our five-star review of the game. Joystiq Streams took Dragon Age for a spin earlier this week, so those that want a taste of the game's first hour should watch the archived video. Meanwhile, Ubisoft dished Far Cry 4 out to current-gen, last-gen and PC players, a game deemed the "undisputed king" of open-world shooters that offers a "staggering number of adventures."

Ubisoft has shipped 9 million copies of Watch Dogs, the company reported in its second quarter 2014-2015 financial report [PDF]. In the first quarter of the fiscal year, just three months ago, Ubisoft announced that it had shipped 8 million copies of Watch Dogs. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot called out Watch Dogs specifically in his comments on today's report: "The very strong momentum we saw at the beginning of the fiscal year carried on into the second quarter and enabled us to once again exceed our performance expectations. Ubisoft continued to capitalize on the popularity of new consoles, the successful launch of Watch Dogs, the quality of its back catalog and the considerable growth of the digital segment. Consequently, our operating income and cash flows improved significantly during the period." During the financial call, Guillemot added that Watch Dogs was on track to ship more than 10 million units by the end of fiscal 2015. Watch Dogs launched in May on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. It's due out for Wii U on November 18. [Image: Ubisoft]

  • Ubisoft: Watch Dogs beats out Destiny as fastest-selling new IP in Europe

Activision's Destiny may be the fastest-selling new intellectual property in North America and UK, but the top of the puppy pile in Europe remains Watch Dogs, according to Ubisoft. A spokesperson for the company informed MCV UK of GFK data that indicates Ubisoft's game is still top dog for new IP in the region. The obvious speculation is that the PC market still dominates most of Europe, and since Destiny isn't available on PC, Watch Dogs being available on the platform likely made up the difference. Despite its critical reception, Destiny has been the top new IP of the year in the UK and North America so far and has pulled in over $325 million worldwide.

  • No 'Bad Blood' DLC for Watch Dogs on Wii U

The Wii U version of Watch Dogs won't receive the game's Bad Blood downloadable content, Ubisoft confirmed via Twitter. It's unclear if the console will be without the add-on entirely or only at launch or whether Ubisoft's tweet refers to all future downloadable content, as the publisher said on the social media channel, "No, the Wii U version will not have the DLC." We reached out to Ubisoft for clarification on the matter and will update as we learn more. Watch Dogs was given a Wii U release date earlier this month; it will launch on November 18 in North America and November 21 in Europe. The game arrived on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in May. The Bad Blood DLC launched yesterday for those systems, though Ubisoft is still working to get the add-on in the hands of Xbox 360 owners "in the upcoming days." [Image: Ubisoft]

  • Watch Dogs 'Bad Blood' DLC now available with season pass

Watch Dogs season pass holders, your wait is over: The sizable Bad Blood DLC is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the DLC are said to be "coming soon." In lieu of another story starring trenchcoat connoisseur Aiden Pearce, Bad Blood focuses on Raymond "T-Bone" Kenney, a hacker most notable for his appearance in the original Watch Dogs campaign and for his off-brand Rob Zombie dreadlocks. "Players pick up T-Bone's story as he's planting a false trail at Blume and receives a panicked phone call from his former Blume colleague, Tobias Frewer, in desperate need of help," reads Ubisoft's official plot description. "T-Bone decides to help Tobias, but quickly realizes the details of his old friend's story aren't adding up." Alongside a new singleplayer campaign, Bad Blood includes additional weapons, perks and outfits, as well as new Street Sweep side missions. Those who own the Watch Dogs season pass should be able to download Bad Blood immediately. If you don't have the season pass but still want to explore the DLC, you have two options: Either purchase the season pass for $20 or wait until Bad Blood comes available to the public on September 30. There's currently no word on what price will be attached to Bad Blood once it's available a la carte. [Image: Ubisoft]
