iTunes Music Store: trouble downloading tracks with Error -50?

This issue was brought to my attention by Vasant, who says users have been reporting errors downloading music from the iTMS for about two weeks. From the discussion thread here it looks like folks are being billed for their tracks, but are encountering primarily an “Error -50” message during the download of the tracks, which either never complete or take repeated attempts, sometimes days worth of attempts, to download.

It also looks like Apple has responded to some users with the suggestion that they turn off any web acceleration software installed by their ISP, which has resolved the issue for some. The errors are being reported by both Windows XP and OS X users, all running iTunes version 4.7.1.

Anyone else seen this?
