Toshiba develops inexpensive recordable HD-DVDs

HD DVD

The HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps' decision to spend a few weeks in couples therapy earlier this year didn't exactly work like we'd hoped it would and now it looks like we're getting further and further away from any kind of compromise on a single unified next-gen DVD format. The latest reason for pessimism is today's news that Toshiba has figured out a way to inexpensively mass produce recordable 15GB HD-DVDs, with the first blank HD-DVD-R discs and recorders due out next spring. Obviously not a big enough deal to edge out Blu-ray, but it only gives the HD-DVD team, which is lead by Toshiba, yet another reason to dig in their heels. Won't somebody think of the children consumers?
