Amazon launches survey of would-be tablet buyers

Amazon launches survey assault on wouldbe tablet buyers

Just a day after Apple unveiled a pair of new iPads, Amazon customers might find an interesting email waiting in their inboxes, asking them to weigh in on the current state of the tablet market. The survey questions each participant on how they feel about various tablet features, and focuses on finding out just how much consumers know about the devices currently available from Apple, Amazon, Google and Samsung.

The questionnaire poses a few theoretical questions like "The new iPad 'retina' has a resolution of 2,048-by-1,536, corresponding to 264 pixels per inch. If another device offered a detail of 254 pixels per inch, how would you rate it compared to the iPad?" Well, let's see... about 10 pixels less awesome.

Of course, the other device Amazon is talking about here is the Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch. A similar question is posed later in the survey, comparing the new iPad mini with the resolution of the 7-inch Fire HD, again without mentioning the Kindle by name. These questions are particularly interesting given that Amazon's own website doesn't actually list the pixel-per-inch measurement in the descriptions of its tablets, but rather the overall resolutions.

The survey also acts as a bit of a consumer knowledge quiz, asking you to choose what speaker systems are built in to the Kindle Fire HD, Nexus 7, iPad and Galaxy Tab. Amazon is probably hoping you already know about its exclusive support for Dolby audio in its Fire HD, though we're guessing that bullet point isn't at the very top of most people's lists.

Those who complete the survey are treated to a $5 Amazon gift card. If you didn't get the email yourself, you can peruse the gallery below for a full rundown, then let us know in the comments if you think it's just a grab for marketing insight, or something more.
