Engadget Review

The Area 51m is a truly unique laptop. It’s portable, but it packs in all of the power, and most of the customizability, that you’d want from a gaming desktop. Still, when other modern laptops are significantly thinner, cheaper, and almost as powerful, it’s a tough sell for most gamers. If anything, it’s a testament to Dell’s ingenuity. And for players who demand power above all else, it’s a solid choice.

Pros
  • The most upgradeable laptop we’ve seen yet
  • Fast desktop components
  • Gorgeous new Alienware design
  • All the ports you’ll ever need
  • Glorious 17-inch 144Hz screen
Cons
  • Keyboard and trackpad feel dated
  • Opening and upgrading parts is a bit of a pain
  • Poor battery life (not surprisingly)
  • Expensive compared to other modern laptops
  • Heavy (especially with two large power adapters)

The Alienware Area-51m combines the past and present to cut a bold direction for gaming laptops.

The Verge
Not only does it hit performance marks unmatched by other portable machines, but it doesn’t have any glaring issues or show-stopping usability problems that bring it down, other than the obvious compromises with its size and weight.

HotHardware
Dell's Alienware Area-51m is a refreshing new take on the traditional desktop replacement gaming laptop we've become accustomed to. The machine's fully user-serviceable, modular design combines some of the best high-end desktop class components for absolutely killer performance, that you won't find in any other gaming notebook currently.

Packing an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics chip and a desktop-class Intel Core i9, Alienware's massively rejiggered flagship, the Area-51m, is the best-performing gaming laptop we've tested, a monster in every sense a laptop can be.

Tom's Hardware
The Alienware Area-51m is a powerful, pretty desktop replacement with upgradeable parts and strong performance, if you can actually afford it.

PC World
Alienware's redesigned powerhouse laptop promises the Holy Grail of gaming laptop features: It's big, fast, beautiful, and even upgradable, with a desktop CPU and a custom upgradable GPU design.

IGN
The Area-51m is certainly the ultimate gaming laptop thanks to its desktop parts, but it's quite expensive (and heavy).

Notebookcheck
Overkill in the best way possible. There is definitely room for improvement in regard to core temperatures and fan noise when compared to the Eurocom Sky X7C. But as a successor to the Alienware 17, it hits all the right notes to be a strong desktop replacement.

Sydney Morning Herald
The Area 51m is the most powerful and upgradeable laptop you can buy today that should make any enthusiast in need of a portable powerhouse happy for years to come, provided they are willing to pay a hefty premium for the privilege.
