Engadget Review

Amazon's Kindle Fire HD is a big step forward over the original Fire, but still a little too customized to appeal to more serious tablet users.

I have a Kindle HD Fire --loved it until I had problems with the charging part & also the on & off button. When I called customer service after reading lots of issues with the Kindle HD charging --I was told it really wasn't a known issue --and they would offer me a refurbished one for $125.00 == why would I buy another one when I have read review after review that states the charging port has known issues. Amazon customer service told me they do not have issues with the Kindle HD charging and they do not replace or fix the Kindle Fire HD. I called the number provided for this issue - and read the product would be replaced - don't believe it - I first was on hold for 45 min and then transf after speaking to someone who agreed there is a problem VERY nice - but then I was on hold again for about 5 min - female just said no known issues but I could buy a refurbished Kindle Hd fire- so I read what I found on line and she said she checked - no problems with the charging. Do not buy this product - too expensive for them not to stand behind their product.

The kindle fire HD is very good for people that spend a lot of time on Amazon, i do find the direct link to amazon store to be useful especially when you want to quickly buy something from them. Amazon also have a great amount of books to read on the kindle and i can just about read books in the sun although it can be difficult. It runs pretty smoothly and i've never really seen i crash or struggle with processing but the one thing that lets the kindle down is its lack of apps. The app store for amazon is dismal; theres barely anything on there that you've heard of and the rest of it is rubbish. Theres only the odd app you've heard of like angry birds and temple run but a lot of the main stream games and apps are missing from the app store so you could be missing out if you're an app lover. The apps the store does have seemed to be forgotten about during updates as well and some things are outdated such as facebook and twitter and even amazon's web browser, Silk, appears to still have the old fashioned google which really makes the kindle feel old and i've only had it just over a year.Overall i think the kindle is a nice little piece of kit but i do think you can get better tablets that you can still get amazon books from and all that sort of stuff whilst having the better features and apps.

For portability and ease of use, I would reccommend this highly as a first tablet. The price was the deciding factor since I got it for $139.00. Who can argue with that!!

The chief problem with the device, as I see it, is that half the Amazon services it is designed to deliver are not available outside the US. I can't get streaming video, and the free trial of Amazon Prime was completely useless to me. Also, not being able to (easily) load apps from the Google Play store severely limits its capabilities as a tablet. It's a good e-reader, but doesn't really offer much beyond the Kindle Paperwhite. It's OK for watching video, if you can get video content for the device. As a tablet, meh.

Purchased one for my daughter and it works great for her using the Amazon FreeTime service. Good model, but does have limitations such as not supporting playback of local media (videos, music, etc.). Solid little tablet which could do much more if allowed by Amazon.
