Engadget Summary

The Play:1 may be smaller, cheaper, and more 'bookshelf-friendly' than other Sonos speakers, but it still manages to deliver exceptional sound in a stylish package. Like its larger sibling the Play:3, the Play:1 has a look and feel that critics found pleasing, with Gizmodo calling it "handsome" and CNET says it's a "stylish and exceptionally well-made wireless speaker." While it may not be portable like the Jawbone JAMBOX, the Play:1 has a much smaller footprint than other Sonos speakers, and TechHive says it's "ideal for bedrooms or kitchens." Usually a smaller speaker means a drop in sound quality but don't worry, What Hi-Fi says the Play:1 delivers "impressive performance," and Pocket-Lint thinks the "bass levels are rich and the speaker copes well with trebles." At just $199, the Play:1 is the cheapest way to jump into the Sonos wireless music system, or just a good addition to your existing collection of Sonos speakers.

The Play:1 is a great little speaker than has so much potential beyond the speaker itself that we can't recommend it enough as a starting place to embrace the Sonos system ... This is about getting the most out of your digital streaming music service without spending a fortune in doing so.

CNET
The Sonos Play:1 finally brings the company's wireless audio magic to the masses, in a fantastically designed compact speaker that's just $199.

SlashGear
The combination of super-straightforward setup and great audio quality continues to single Sonos out, as does the range of integration with both local and streaming audio sources.

Gizmodo
I think the system really isn't totally complete on its own in a living room without a stereo pair, which brings up the regular price of a new system to $450, which is quite pricey.

The Sonos Play:1 is probably the most impressive speaker we’ve seen from Sonos. It offers all the convenience of its streaming brothers in a smaller, cheaper form. Don’t expect it to power a party single-handed, but this speaker is simply brilliant.

It looks good, sounds good and will doubtlessly impress anyone that hasn't experienced the power of the Sonos/Spotify tie up. But to really take advantage of what Sonos is capable of, you'll still need to invest in a multi-room setup, which also remains multi-quid.

The Sonos Play:1 impressed us as it is probably the best compact wireless speaker system that we have heard to date.

A great addition to the Sonos range, plus you can add to and improve on the sound over time.

The Play:1 is affordable, compact, sounds good, and includes all the capabilities and streaming options available with the other speakers. In short, it's a gateway drug to the Sonos ecosystem.

Sonos has cooked up a superb quality speaker at a more affordable entry point, meaning it's no longer just one for the upper earners – let's hope we see more of this attitude.
