You no longer have to don a Gear VR headset to watch Hulu in virtual reality. The streaming service has introduced an Oculus Rift app that brings the immersive experience to your PC. The Rift version not only takes advantage of the extra power of a computer (it's "polished, sharper and highly responsive"), but introduces themed viewing rooms for shows. When you watch 12 Monkeys, it'll plunk you in the sci-fi series' Temporal Facility -- a bit gimmicky, to be sure, but less illusion-breaking than a virtual living room. Here's hoping that other shows get a similar treatment, and that HTC Vive owners get their turn.

Sure, Philips' color-changing Hue light bulbs can give you calendar or weather reminders, but if you buy them for practical reasons, you're doing it wrong. To bust out their fun side, Syfy has just announced that its 12 Monkeys series, based on the cult Terry Gilliam film, will sync in time with the home WiFi lighting. The cable channel first did the Hue trick with Sharknado, an experience we found to be hit-and-miss. You'll need to install Syfy's iOS or Android app, then set it up to work with your Hue Bridge and bulbs. From there, it'll provide special effects that "enhance" the show in a way you'll either find cool or cheesy, depending on your state of mind.

  • The time travel movie 12 Monkeys is becoming a TV show in 2015

If you're so enamored with time travel in TV shows that even Doctor Who isn't enough, we have good news: you're about to get a lot more of it. Syfy has ordered production of a series based on Terry Gilliam's classic movie 12 Monkeys. While the show will go without most of the apocalyptic flick's cast and crew when it airs in January 2015, its first season (appropriately 12 episodes long) will involve original producer Charles Roven as well as veteran actors from Nikita and X-Men: The Last Stand. The story arc will likely be familiar to anyone who watched the 1995 film -- or 1962's La Jetée, for that matter -- but we're not going to complain about revisiting one of sci-fi's most enduring concepts.
