  • Shacknews sees Duke Nukem Forever ... the game ... really

Some of the Shacknews crew are one small evolutionary step away from people who swear they've seen UFOs, the Virgin Mary in their toast, or Elvis at the laundromat. They've seen Duke Nukem Forever. No, we don't mean the underwhelming teaser they dropped last year or, well, that's about all we've seen in the last half-decade; we're talking about the actual game actually running on a modern computer. They "witnessed several different DNF gameplay scenarios, mechanics, and environments being demonstrated ... including environmental puzzles and interactivity, a host of finished weapons, the existence of an in-game forklift, and plenty of heads and arms being blown off." For those skeptics out there disinclined to believe the existence of such nonsense, we point you towards the following comment by one Mr. George Broussard from developer 3D Realms, posting under the name GeorgeB3DR: "... out of the blue I just decided to show them DNF for about an hour ..."... right, and we imagine they were also abducted "out of the blue" by a piece of toast with Elvis' face on it right after that. Duke Nukem Forever exists indeed.

  • Rumor: The Duke to get his own DS title

Here's a rumor straight out of left field for you: gun-totin', cigar-chewin', misogynistic idiot Duke Nukem could be about to get his own DS (and PSP) game, with a release allegedly scheduled for later this year. That's according to one Dutch retailer, which claims that "Duke Nukem DS" is coming out at some point during Q3. Naturally, you'll all know about the great, big internet joke that is Duke Nukem Forever (a game that almost makes the existence of Sadness look plausible), so you can probably appreciate where we stand on this. In short: "do not believe." And "do not want" also, now that we think about it.[Via Go Nintendo]

  • Prey 2 is in development, first details revealed

Over the weekend, Shacknews broke news that 3D Realms' mind-mending, shape shifting shooter Prey that released nearly two years ago will indeed be getting a sequel.According to information found on Radar Group's website (all of which has since been removed), we learn first off that Prey 2 is real and that that the game was listed for release on the 360 and PC. We also get a tiny bit of information regarding Prey 2's plot with the release of one piece of concept art (as seen above) and a description that reads; "this time, abandoned and framed for the disappearance of his family, Tommy escapes an Earth that no longer wants him for a future that cannot survive without him."We'll be the first to say that we wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to a game that was rather enjoyable, but we have a hard time believing 3D Realms can juggle the simple task of overseeing the development of Prey 2 and Duke Nukem Forever. One will suffer ... and we're sure you can already guess which of the two that will be. ZING![Via Joystiq]

Our initial assessment of the fragile 3D Realms and Dallas Business Journal relationship seems to have been made in haste, or maybe it was jealousy. The Dallas Business Journal has released a brand new image of the anticipated uh... most-wanted um... video game Duke Nukem Forever. The image, which is shown above in its original size, might be of an enemy in the upcoming title but because we do not have access to the Hubble Space telescope to magnify it from its 300 pixel wide glory we can't say for sure.

According to a report in the Dallas Business Journal, Duke Nukem Forever, the game whose title carefully reflected development length, will come out in 2008 for next-gen systems. 3D Realms front-man and President, Scott Miller, confirmed a late 2008 release, padding the claim with "we may miss the mark by a month or two, but I feel very confident that we're on target this time," landing the game at a February 2009 release at the latest. But, really?According to our lovely friends at Joystiq, 3D Realms isn't so sure those statements were made. Scott Miller shrugs his shoulders and the company has issued a statement, saying quite clearly: "The release date is still 'when it's done,' and will be until the appropriate moment. Platforms have not been finalized or announced." So there you have it. Don't believe the rumors -- it's still more or less vaporware.[via 1UP]

  • 3D Realms disputes confirmation of Duke Nukem Forever in 2008

"Duke Nukem Forever confirmed for 2008," heralds an unlikely source in Dallas Business Journal. What the modest, Texas newspaper actually seems to suggest is that 3D Realms is "on target" to release the mythical sequel sometime this year, though company co-owner Scott Miller adds, "we may miss the mark by a month or two" (wink, wink). Miller also hinted that "hitting the big three" (in this case, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3) is the obvious development strategy, but he continued to stress that 3D Realms has not "formally announced any platforms for DNF." 3D Realms informed Shacknews that any suggestion by Dallas Business Journal that DNF's release date and platforms have been confirmed is erroneous. Expect an official statement from 3D Realms later today. Update: 3D Realms president George Broussard lays it out loud and clear in the follow-up statement issued today. "The release date is still 'when it's done,' and will be until the appropriate moment. Platforms have not been finalized or announced. You can rest assured that we are moving toward a goal and that the recently released teaser trailer is the start of that process and seeing more of the game, sooner than later." We should also note that Dallas Business Journal seemingly confirms ongoing rumor that Duke Nukem 3D is bound for Xbox Live Arcade and will include online multiplayer and co-op support. "We're really excited about bringing classic Duke to the 360," Miller allegedly told the paper, "We're talking to Microsoft about getting a release slot sometime this year."

  • Duke Nukem Forever, XBLA Duke confirmed for 08 [Update 2]

Update 2: The original interview in the Dallas Business Journal has been edited with many corrections regarding all things Duke. Primarily it now reads Duke Nukem Forever is internally projected for a 2008 release by 3D Realms and will likely come to the Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC. Basically, we're back to square one. Update: 3D Realms has informed Shacknews that the release date and platform availability for Duke Nukem Forever were not confirmed in the Dallas Business Journal interview, though the company apparently did not deny the information regarding the XBLA release of Duke Nukem 3D. Original article: Hot off the presses internets comes word from 3D Realms that Duke Nukem Forever is confirmed for late 2008 release. Hitting Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC it was announced for in 1996, Duke is the daddy of everything vaporware. In an email exchange with the Dallas Business Journal, 3D Realms president Scott Miller confirmed that the long 12-year wait for Duke's return will be over by the end of the calendar year. Miller went on to reiterate, "we may miss the mark by a month or two, but I feel very confident that we're on target this time." Miller also confirmed the existence of the rumored Xbox Live Arcade version of the classic PC title Duke Nukem 3D, which will feature online multiplayer support, leaderboards, and a co-op mode. When asked about a possible release date for the XBLA title Miller said, "we're talking to Microsoft about getting a release slot sometime this year." We're holding our collective breaths.

Though obviously lacking in details regarding the perpetually in-development Duke Nukem Forever, we can't say we're eagerly awaiting every drop of information (this isn't Brawl, after all). Still, we'll give props to Down in Front, who managed to corner the game's art director, Tramell "T-Ray" Isaac, for an interview. What have we learned? Nothing of great consequence. The unsurprisingly underwhelming teaser trailer was all captured from the in-game engine using Fraps, and the game's storyline takes place in the near future, in Las Vegas. Information regarding release dates, or even general assurances that development in moving along nicely, are notably absent. Like we're surprised.

After six long years, the team at 3D Realms finally broke their silence last month, showing off a short – and by many opinions, disappointing – teaser for Duke Nukem Forever. Though we're all well aware DNF isn't close to being released, rumor has it (again and again) that Duke Nukem 3D will resurrect the franchise on Xbox Live Arcade so the title's core audience, who were parking their bricks in a pair of Pull-Ons ten years ago, can learn what The Duke is all about. Here's the details: sources close to developer 3D Realms told IGN that DN3D is scheduled to appear on Xbox Live Arcade "within the next several months" featuring four-player online co-op and eight-player online deathmatch. If true, this would be the first 3D Realms-developed game to ship since ... well, the original Duke Nukem 3D in 1996. Okay, there was also the strangely offensive Shadow Warrior in 1997, but we'd just as soon like to forget about that ...

We've had our share of rumors surrounding XBLA releases as of late, so many that our head has been metaphorically spinning in an effort to keep track of them all. But, it's another day and that means we have to accept the fact that we've got another XBLA rumor. So, let's get to it ... Duke Nukem 3D to the Xbox Live Arcade! Yes sir, word on the street is that 3D Realms is cooking up an XBLA version of Duke Nukem 3D that'll not only kick ass and chew bubblegum, but will also be Xbox Live enabled. Live functionality including four player co-op and eight player versus deathmatch to boot. The rumor comes from a 3D Realms employee who confirmed with IGN that the game is in full development and that it should make a release to the Arcade within' the next few months. Believe what you want, but even if 3D Realms were to confirm Duke Nukem 3D for the XBLA we'd have to see it before we 100% believed it. Because, you know, there's always the possibility that we could have another generation of vaporware on our hands.

  • Where's Duke Nukem been the last decade?

The door swung shut, his familiar frame lumbered in, sunk into the couch, like nothing had changed these last ten years. "Where have you been?" we screamed. "It's been ten years!""I'm looking for some alien toilet to park my bricks. Who's firrrrst?""So that's it? You come in here stinking like a wet cigar and that's all you've got to say for yourself?" He puffed on his cigar, blew radioactive smoke in our faces, and left ... Evidently, the boys at ShackNews have gotten over their abandonment issues (any pointers?) and taken a calendar-heavy look at the game's progress (or lack thereof, knowhutamean?) over the last decade of development. Most telling: the two E3 trailers, in '98 and '01, that show plenty of gameplay in what would almost seem to be a nearly complete game. Once you're done reading that, take another look at The Duke Nukem Forever List, an incredibly sobering breakdown of the things that have transpired since the game was first announced (spoiler alert: Google didn't exist yet). And that's really all you can say about it. The surprise Duke Nukem Forever teaser that was announced last night is now on the internets for all to see, and we're left pretty much where we started. Well, maybe not exactly where we started, but we can definitely see the starting line from here. So, what's in the video? Assuming this is in-engine footage, it looks fairly pretty. Duke's biceps are excellently manly and full of bulging veins. There are pig monsters, squid monsters, and generic alien monsters. Duke spits out a trademark one-liner, which unfortunately falls a little flat. That's it. Roll credits. It's okay though. It's a teaser after all. Consider us teased. Now, 3D Realms, it's time to put up or shut up. Show us some gameplay footage or at least let us in on the ten year old joke.

Much like being trapped within the confines of a stereotypical Star Trek episode, watching Duke Nukem Forever's latest tease is an unwelcome encounter with your favorite industry's very own temporal loop. We've all been through the cycle of doubt and anticipation many times over, hurled back to the beginning whenever 3D Realms decides to switch engines, scrap designs and slam the big ol' reset button on George Broussard's desk. This particular peek at 3D Realms' perpetually approaching wolf offers exactly what you'd expect: bulging biceps, tentacled aliens and absolutely no assurances that your ten-year wait will be worth it. Until we see an actual game, consider our reserves of faith and interest thoroughly depleted.

Potato pancakes and waffle fries! 3D Realms announced on their forums (which are currently down due to excessive bandwidth usage) that today, Wednesday, December 19th they'll be releasing a brand new Duke Nukem Forever teaser trailer ... you hear that? A Duke Nukem Forever teaser trailer! According to the forum post, the 3D Realms crew showed off the teaser at their annual company Christmas party and they all agreed that the masses needed to see it. The trailer should be available by 1:00PM eastern and you know that we and the world can't wait. So, for the time being, gush over the official 3D Realms released DNF screen-grab above. As a sign that Duke Nukem (the character) is still alive and kicking, 3D Realms has announced that a teaser video for Duke Nukem Forever will go live tomorrow at noon CST (that's 1:00 p.m. EST, or Joystiq Time). To tide us over, the developer has released a screenshot (seen above) from tomorrow's video to prove that it does, in fact, exist. After over a decade of waiting, it's about time somebody released a teaser video of the game in its current form. Of course, the very word "teaser" gives us the impression that it'll be less than 30 seconds long and have little to no bearing on the actual gameplay. If you've been waiting over 10 years to see Duke puff a high-resolution cigar, then good for you! If not, feel free to join us in the Land of Expected Disappointments tomorrow (with well roasted crow on standby).[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Remember when we said another Duke Nukem Forever image prior to summer's end would indicate an "imminent apocalypse?" Time to prepare your shelters because 3D Realms threw in a new picture of DNF in the latest issue of Game Informer alongside the unveiling of Earth No More. The picture itself is rather non-revealing -- even more so than the previous two pictures of Duke and a Pork Nemesis. Over at the DNF forums, 3DR staffer Joe Siegler said that he cannot post a higher-resolution image online but agreed to the suggestion that the screenshot's inclusion in the magazine might get more people to read about Earth No More. Sneaky tactic, indeed -- at least Duke is being used somehow.Just a reminder, we are now in the year 10 A.D. ("After Duke"), a decade since the unveiling of DNF.

Duke Nukem Forever is starting to have a lot in common with modern myths. Like Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster, months pass with no news whatsoever, and then the topic is ablaze again with the release of a blurry photograph. The newest image comes from the latest issue of Game Informer, inside an article discussing 3D Realms' Earth No More. So, what can we discern from the new image? Not much. We can see lightning, what looks like a tree or tentacled creature, some walls, and that's about it. Of course, that won't stop hungry Duke Nukem fans from analyzing the image until their eyes bleed. We'd like to join them, but like many Sasquatch Duke Nukem Forever skeptics, we're just not convinced the game actually exists.

3D Realms just announced their latest sci-fi/horror/suspense based game and is being tight lipped about the all the juicy details. Over on their blog, 3D Realms talks about Earth No More being their latest project and only teases about the details, because all the goods will be revealed in the July 2007 issue of Game Informer. Though, they did throw us a bone by posting a few quotes from the Game Informer article including details on a gun that works like a reverse proton pack called the Linker and how enemy AI will group together to take you down. They also mentioned that the team is pulling inspiration from movies like 28 Days Later, The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Aliens to nail the kind of suspense and horror that these movies bring to the table. But that's about it as any other details will have to come from Game Informer. Patience friends, patience.

    06.19.2007

3D Realms, the company behind the videogame punchline Duke Nukem Forever, has just announced the development of a new shooter for the PS3, PC and Xbox 360. Titled Earth No More, the action title game will supposedly feature a robust conversation engine for communicating with teammates and NPCs, as well as strong story thats 'part 28 Days Later, part War of the Worlds.' Making the game are ex-Max Payne developers, Recoil Games. This appears to be their first title under their own development label though, so it's hard to judge their true pedigree. Also, besides hints of a storyline that consists of a pissed-off Earth who's trying to kill us and some vague team mechanics, very little is known about the game. It won't be coming out until 2009 though, so there is a lot of time for us to learn more about the game. Of course, at the rate 3D Realms publishes games, there's always the possibility that we won't see it until 2015.[Via Joystiq]

The latest issue of Game Informer has details on 3D Realms' Earth No More, likely one of their two "big announcements" expected within the next six months. The title is being developed for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 by Recoil Gamers, reportedly made up of former Max Payne developers.Earth No More centers around a New Englander caught in the middle of an outbreak in a town surrounded by poison, terraforming vines -- it may sound a lot like War of the Worlds, but these vines are (gasp!) part of a man-made catastrophe! The game will play out without cutscenes, à la Half-Life 2, and the article (via CVG) claims that human interaction will be the focus of the title, "with a conversation mechanic said to rival that of Mass Effect." Bit of a bold statement, given that BioWare's RPG is still not finalized (or dated, for that matter). There will also be online co-op.Earth No More is tentatively set for a 2009, or 12 A.D. (i.e. After Duke Nukem Forever was announced), release.
