Renegade Kid will reclaim the intellectual property rights to its atmospheric first-person game, Moon, in 2014. The developer of Mutant Mudds and Dementium wants to pursue a sequel once it regains ownership of the game, first published by Mastiff in 2009. "Save your energy. Renegade Kid gains Moon rights back in 2014," wrote studio co-founder Jools Watsham on Twitter. In a follow-up tweet he said, "It has always been our plan to create a sequel to Moon. Never could convince the pub to go for it. Come 2014 we're in control." The studio is currently working on Treasurenauts and a sequel to Mutant Mudds, which it expects to launch next year.

  • Flipnote Studio 3D scribbles on Japan July 3

Flipnote Studio 3D has marked out July 3 for its arrival in Japan. There's no word yet on exact release timing for western eShops, though the free portable doodler was earmarked for the summer in a mini Nintendo Direct (above) released earlier this year. The 3DS successor to Flipnote lets handheld artists create animations with 3D effects, and users can export their works as GIFs and AVIs. Those GIFs and AVIs won't just be in black, red, and blue, as the new Flipnote features a welcome six colors. You'll also be able to show off your kaleidoscopic animations via Friend Flipnote Gallery and World Flipnote Gallery services, although the latter carries a monthly fee. The news comes on the day Flipnote community support is set to end on DSi.

  • Gamestop Q1 sales and profits down, mobile/digital sales up

Gamestop's financial data for the first quarter of its fiscal 2013 have arrived like a pizza with nearly 25 percent fewer toppings than the pizza you ordered during the same 13-week period last year. Also, cheesy bread sales are way up? This may not be the strongest analogy. In non-allegorical terms, gross revenue (overall sales) and net income (post-tax profit) were both down year-over-year, at $1.865 billion and $54.6 million, respectively. As far as net income, that's a 24.69 percent decrease from the $72.5 million Gamestop reported at the end of Q1 2012. Meanwhile, mobile device sales were up 290 percent, though this massive increase was largely due to the fact that Gamestop's mobile trade-in/sales program was just getting started during Q1 of 2012. Digital sales also increased, to the tune of 47.3 percent year-over-year, while new software sales, both physical and digital, fell 3.8 percent. As was the case during Q1 2012, used hardware and software sales accounted for the majority of Gamestop's pre-tax profit, with new hardware and software sales making up just 29.5 percent of the quarter's overall gross.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog arrives on Android, headed exclusively to Nintendo on the console side

USSR and the USA. Batman and Joker. Christoph Waltz and... well, everyone. It's pretty tough to look at the world's best-known rivalries and exclude one of history's finest -- that being, of course, Sonic and Mario. The gritty battle between Nintendo and Sega gave fans on both sides plenty to converse about over the years, and one might say that the video game industry as a whole benefited from the back-and-forth. Now that Sega is a shell of its former self, though, the company's most iconic character is turning to its archrival in search of shelter. On the console side, Nintendo will be the exclusive home for Sonic games going forward, with the Wii U and 3DS set to become the homes for the next three titles -- details of which should be revealed "in the coming weeks." (Update: Looks as if Nintendo has outed a few more details. Sonic Lost World and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games have been name-checked in particular.) Meanwhile, Android users will be pleased to know that Sonic the Hedgehog was released today in the Google Play store. It's available for $2.99, while iOS users are also being granted a free update to coincide.

The ol' eShop gets a double dose of "super" this week with the release of both Super Metroid and Super Ghouls N' Ghosts on the Wii U. And, don't forget that Super Metroid is only $0.30 until June 12. The Blue Bomber continues his assault on the 3DS Virtual Console with the debut of Mega Man 5, along with the original Harvest Moon. Also available is a new 3DS port of Swords & Soldiers from Ronimo, creators of the excellent Awesomenauts. Meanwhile, the Wii gets some love this week with a Virtual Console release of King of Fighters '99. Finally, there are a couple of sales. Runner 2 is available for 25 percent off its usual $14.99 price. Also, those who purchase (or already own) Super Mario World on the Wii U Virtual Console can pick up Super Mario Bros. 2 for half price.

The never-ending march of LEGO games from Warner Bros. and Traveller's Tales continues with LEGO Friends. Based on the toy line of the same name, LEGO Friends is aimed at young girls and offers lots of activities as the titular friends explore Heartlake City. Players can customize their character and living space – right down to the choice of pet and pet accessories – and work to build relationships with their friends, hoping eventually to reach "True Friend" status (aren't we all?). Activities include things like horse riding, photography, pet training, dancing and, our personal favorite, delivering cupcakes. LEGO Friends heads to DS and 3DS this fall.

  • Nintendo is selling refurbished 3DS, DSi through its online store

It's hard to get more credible than "authentic refurbished Nintendo products" from Nintendo's official store. Nintendo of America is selling refurbished 3DS and DSi consoles, starting at $100 for Metallic Rose and Midnight Blue DSi XLs, and $130 for the 3DS in Aqua Blue and Midnight Purple.Nintendo's blurb says its line represents "the only refurbished products in the market that have been cleaned, tested, and inspected to meet Nintendo's high standards." Well then. The portables have a one year warranty and are guaranteed to work, even if there are any "minor cosmetic blemishes."Alas, Eurofriends, it seems this one's a NoA thing. "We currently have no plans and have made no announcements for this type of activity in Europe," Nintendo UK told Eurogamer.

The creepy-looking Pokémon Deoxys will be available in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 starting May 8, through a special character distribution online. If you're still playing the trading card game, it's also being released for that in a new "Plasma Freeze" expansion. Are people still playing the TCG?When Deoxys was first introduced back in 2005, it was revealed as part of a cross-promotion between Pokémon and NASA designed to help teach kids about DNA. Perhaps you didn't realize, when you woke up this morning, that you lived in a world where NASA and Pokémon had collaborated.
