  • Diggs Nightcrawler solves the mystery of a great fall

Adam Volker from developer Moonbot spoke to the European PlayStation Blog about the new Wonderbook game Diggs Nightcrawler, revealing that while the concept is in place, the gameplay isn't quite yet.Humpty Dumpty is murdered, Volker explained. "And you know his story – someone pushed him off the wall, someone bumped him off – and the cops think it's Diggs. So when you start the game he's framed for the murder of his old buddy. The story unfolds from there, with you attempting to clear Diggs' name and find out who actually committed the crime."That's the setup for the game. "Because Wonderbook is new, we're still figuring out a lot of specifics about what the gameplay is," he added. The characters will be self-aware, and gameplay will involved physically manipulating the book peripheral a lot. Diggs will even tell you to "turn the page" or otherwise move through the book, allowing today's children to have an experience of the read-along books and audio cassettes we grew up with.

PlayStation Move-based sports minigame collection Sports Champions 2 is set to launch October 30, Sony revealed in a recent blog post. As the follow-up to the PS Move pack-in game, it will include a new archery minigame along with bowling, skiing, boxing, golf, and tennis.Sports Champions 2's Party Mode also enables groups of players to set up multi-game tournaments. "I'm sick of sitting through crap development pitches," Pete Smith, Sony XDev director of product development, told an audience of developers at GDC Europe last week. Smith handles all of the European studios looking to snag a publishing deal on Sony systems, and he helped games such as Heavy Rain and the Motorstorm series race into the public eye.Smith knows what he wants in a pitch, but just as importantly, he knows precisely what he doesn't want. He gave an overview of his approach to independent pitches, and then broke down a quick and dirty list of "do's" and "do not's." Read through Smith's pet peeves and praises below.

Sony's augmented-reality Move accessory, Wonderbook, has two new, official stories to tell: Diggs Nightcrawler and BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs. We heard the Diggs Nightcrawler name at E3 this year, but today at its Gamescom press conference Sony showed a video, featuring a multi-armed insect detective in a noir setting as he solves fairy tale crimes. Diggs Nightcrawler is in development from Moonbot Studios.Walking with Dinosaurs, from Supermassive Games and the BBC, allows players to interact with a range of extinct creatures, including T-rexes and Allosauruses, in a suspiciously educational way.Disney has also signed on to lend its properties to Wonderbook, though Sony has yet to reveal any details about potential titles. Sony also showed off more footage of Book of Spells, the Harry Potter Wonderbook game, leading us to conclude that this bit of hardware is indeed intended for a family audience.

Until Dawn, a new PS3 game for Move, was described at Gamescom as "just like your favorite teen horror movies." You play as seven different teens, facing unspecified terrors out in the woods overnight, with the goal of keeping them all alive.Judging from the dialogue, the challenge comes from finding the motivation to save any of them. This title was trademarked just before Gamescom, and now we know what it is!

  • NBA 2K13 hits the hardwood with Kinect, PS Move rides the bench

During a demo of NBA 2K13 yesterday, 2K Sports representatives showed off a new feature exclusive to the Xbox 360 version of NBA 2K13: Kinect voice commands. These commands can be used for simple things like telling a player to move to the post, as well as more advanced commands like calling isolation plays for specific ballers. Cursing at Kinect is a feature, but it'll net you a foul in-game.The Kinect features will only be available when playing against the AI in NBA 2K13 – no Kinect voice commands in online and local multiplayer. 2K Games reps said that it didn't make sense from both a technological and gameplay standpoint. In local multiplayer, there'd be no way to determine who is who; using Kinect voice commands online would bog down the experience in needless lag.As for PS Move support on the PS3, 2K Games reps told me that feature would not make a return this year. PS Move support made its debut in NBA 2K12, unveiled by none other than Kobe Bryant during an E3 2011 presentation.%Gallery-162192%

  • LittleBigPlanet celebrates 7 million user levels with massive, manic infochart

Media Molecule has trumpeted a new milestone for its LittleBigPlanet community: seven million user levels created and submitted. At some time last night, the seven millionth user level was uploaded to the servers, spurring the creation of the busy infographic above. See it in its full glory here. The celebratory image provides interesting context for the milestone, like how 200 new levels debut every hour. Did you know it would take Sackboy 21 years to run through every community level? Indeed, it's been a pretty eventful four years since the first LittleBigPlanet launched, and with the impending arrival of LittleBigPlanet Vita and LittleBigPlanet Karting on the PS3, Sony's newest (and most adorable) mascot shows no signs of slowing down.

Starting at 12am PT (3am ET), PSN will be down for around two hours in North America. It looks like Europe won't be affected this time. The routine maintenance will go down basically the same as last week's maintenance – if you signed into PSN in the last few days, you should have no problem accessing apps and playing games during the downtime; however, if you haven't logged in recently, you'll be shut out. Relax, you still have some time to log in!The PlayStation Blog says PSN should be back up and running around 2am PT (5am ET). During the maintenance, both the PSN Store and Account Management will be inaccessible.

If you've been waiting for a new mini-game collection for the PlayStation Move, you won't have to wait much longer. Sony has announced Lights, Camera, Party!, a mini-game collection apparently so zany that it warrants an exclamation point right there in the title. The game stars the Funzinis, "a family forced to compete in an array of wild game shows to win a new home after the TV station's satellite crash lands in their living room."Lights, Camera, Party! features 50 different mini-games, and only requires one Move controller to play. The main story mode supports up to 4 players, while certain modes go all the way up to 8. The mini-games seem playful enough, though cat bowling may be the most reprehensible thing we've heard of since we discovered cat juggling.

  • PSN Tuesday: Expendables 2, but no Grand Theft Auto 3 [update]

Due to "an unforeseen complication," Grand Theft Auto 3 won't make its debut as a PS2 Classic download today. The PS2 Classic will instead arrive on some future date, and the PlayStation Blog says it'll update us when as soon as possible. As for things that do exist today, The Expendables 2 is a thing you can pay money to download, and is joined by PS2 Classic War of the Monsters and the aforementioned Transformers: War for Cybertron demo – you don't have to pay money for that last thing. Pre-orders for next week's release, Sound Shapes, are also open – it's 20% off for PS Plus members and all pre-orderers will receive a free PS3 theme. We haven't seen the theme, but it probably has some shapes in it, probably not much in the way of sound.Update: According to a comment on the PlayStation Blog from Morgan Haro, community manager for digital platforms at PlayStation, the reason GTA 3 isn't available for download this week is due to a licensing issue involving the soundtrack. "There were some last minute issues with getting clearance for a certain audio track in the game; but the teams at Rockstar are on it to review how to best get this title on PSN."

  • Epic Mickey 2 also coming to PC and Mac on Nov. 18

The plan is for Disney's Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two to launch on Xbox 360, PS3 with Move, Wii, PC and Mac on November 18, Junction Point founder Warren Spector said today at San Diego Comic-Con. The launch date was previously confirmed for consoles alone, including the 3DS tie-in title, Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Illusion, which is also slated to drop on November 18.The Power of Illusion will pay homage to forgotten and rejected gaming features, drawing inspiration from 16-bit graphics and the 1990 Sega game, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse.Spector said it was "totally dumb" that he had none of the characters speak in the first Epic Mickey, and he's rectifying that by having characters not only talk, but sing in Epic Mickey 2. Actor Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Robin Hood: Men in Tights) voices Gus, while Frank Welker (Nibbler in Futurama, at least one character in every cartoon you ever loved) plays Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.Epic Mickey 2 is mature on a level comparable to one of Spector's earlier titles, Deus Ex, backed up by the fact that 54 percent of Epic Mickey players were 18 or older, he said.A second iteration of the Epic Mickey digital graphic novel series, penned by comic veteran Peter David (The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man 2099), is due out this fall.
