After more than ten years devoted to video games and the people who make them, Joystiq is closing its doors. We won't be reporting on the best games of 2015, so join us for one last hurrah as the Joystiq family reveals their Games of a Lifetime. Repton Can you imagine the "Teens React to BBC Micro" video? With its properly floppy disks and its DOS-like start screen, that big beige box of the '80s was how my gaming life began. I could pick so many games I played on that machine, most of which no-one's heard of, but they'd all be inferior to Repton. The pseudo top-down, pseudo side-scrolling puzzler had its own space-time rules, According to Repton, a reptile in a yellow t-shirt can walk through the same square of dust that can support a whopping great boulder, or dozens of whopping great boulders at that. It didn't really make sense, but the cleverness of its puzzling design was undoubted. The very best levels required a chess-like effort of planning ahead, shifting specific boulders, clearing dust and freeing spirit sprites in the right order so you could grab every last one of the golden diamond jewels. I absolutely loved Repton and its inventive sequels; Repton 2 was an interconnected world of sub-levels, while other games even explored the future and Wild West. Without the BBC Micro and Repton in particular, I just wouldn't be where I am today.

Update: Square Enix confirms stateside prices for its two JRPG PS4 ports: Final Fantasy VII gets a tag of $16, while X/X-2 HD Remaster is priced at $50. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster blitzballs onto PlayStation 4 next spring, after Square Enix confirmed the news following this week's leak. The publisher said this morning it's porting the re-release, already out on PS3 and Vita, to Sony's latest console with "system-exclusive features." By the way, that note about system-exclusive features goes for Final Fantasy VII too. As for what those features are, we'll have to wait and see. We're also waiting for word from Square Enix America, but the company's European branch revealed regional prices for the two ports. The remaster of the two Xs comes in at £40/50 euros, and it's on its way to store shelves as well as PSN. Final Fantasy VII, meanwhile, is downloadable-only (not cloud-based but Cloud-based), and its Euro-price is £13/16 euros. [Image: Square Enix]

"This is my story now," whispered the PlayStation 4. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is making the pilgrimage to PS4, at least if a now pulled Square Enix listing is anything to go by. As spotted by a NeoGAF user, the publisher's online store for France said the polished-up PS2 RPGs are coming to Sony's latest system in spring 2015. The listing is no longer on the site, but Google Cache verifies it wasn't just a dream. The listing even had box art, which you can view for yourself in hi-def glory below the break.

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. We'll be able to get a social-oriented sci-fi fix in Destiny later this year, complete with flashy superpowers and an arsenal of weaponry that further convinces us of how awesome the future will be. And with Mass Effect undoubtedly coming along and the whole Star Wars thing, it feels like a pretty great time to be a sci-fi fan. Whether you want to watch a saga play out or guide its progression, you'll probably have some great choices consuming your life in the near future. Of course, it's possible that the collective sci-fi genre bores you, which is why we brought you this fresh edition of the Joystiq Weekly. Yes, there's a slew of Destiny-flavored video content, but there's also a glimpse of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, reviews for Child of Light and Mario Golf: World Tour, and an exploration of Microsoft's original content plans for Xbox. You can read up on these stories and more after the break!

  • Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remasters trailer focuses on new features

The latest trailer for the PS3 and Vita remasters of Final Fantasy X and X-2 showcases the HD games' new features, including the additional audio episode and expert sphere grid, and the Iutycur dungeon from the International version of X-2. Sadly, Square Enix didn't add a scene of Wakka telling wakka wakka jokes for 10 minutes straight, like we requested. We recently caught up with Yoshinori Kitase, the Square Enix veteran who produced the two remasters, and he told us how much of a challenge it was working on them. "Some people might argue it's a simple high definition version of the game released ten years ago, but it had to be more than that," Kitase said, "because those who played the original version ten years ago, in the space of ten years all those memories become sweeter. They probably remember those games actually better than it was really." Some two and a half years after they were announced, Square Enix is finally ready to put the remasters on Western retail shelves next month. You can relive Tidus and Yuna's stories on PS3 and Vita starting March 18 in North America, and March 21 in Europe. [Image: Square Enix]

Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII crams another costume into its virtual wardrobe. On top of Final Fantasy 7's protagonist Cloud Strife, you'll be able to dress up as Final Fantasy X's Yuna in the PS3 version of Lightning Returns. The Yuna get-up will be available as an unlock for folks who pick up a first-run physical copy of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, which launches in the US and Europe in March. In addition to the costume, Lightning will whip out Yuna's victory pose after battles. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is the third and final game in the Final Fantasy XIII series. If you've neglected to play the first two entries, Square Enix served up a retro recap video yesterday that should bring you up to speed.

Square Enix unleashed five trailers for its Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster remakes today. The trailers hone in on two of the games' chraracters, Wakka and Rikku, and also show battles and blitzball matches, both prettier than their respective PS2 games. The final video of the bunch highlights the first game's iconic moment between Yuna and Tidus at the Holy Springs. The PS3 version of the remastered compilation was delayed to March 18, 2014 in North America and March 21 in Europe with details of the Vita version's new release date yet to come. Rumors from Japan suggest the upcoming remaster of Final Fantasy X – remember, it's not a remake – will come bundled with another game on PS3: a remastered version of its direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2. Though each will supposedly be sold on a single PS3 disc, the latest issue of Japanese mag Shonen Jump says they'll be separately available on Vita. The remaster of Final Fantasy X was first announced back in late 2011, only for Square Enix to go silent for almost the next two years. The HD version resurfaced last month, when Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto gave us a brief glimpse at the game running on PS Vita. Square Enix has said an announcement with further details regarding the Final Fantasy X remaster is coming "soon."[Thanks, Draco.]

Square Enix's hi-def remastering of Final Fantasy X made a surprise appearance during Sony's Vita-focused broadcast. After its announcement nearly 18 months ago, we've heard very little about the spruced-up re-release, which is coming to both PS3 and Vita. However, in this morning's broadcast series producer Shinji Hashimoto assured fans the game is still in development, and that an announcement of further details in coming "soon."The broadcast offered some very brief first footage of the remaster, which only showcased characters Tidus, Yuna, and two of the aeons, all in their in-battle animations. As if to prove it all wasn't an elaborate ruse, Hashimoto then held up a Vita with the game running on it (see below the break), which you can see for yourself by watching a replay of the Sony broadcast here (head to the 32m30s mark for the FFX footage).

While regaling Chinese Final Fantasy fans with tales of upcoming downloadable content headed to Final Fantasy XIII-2 during the Taipei Game Show, Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto also took time to answer fan questions about various FF projects. One such question directed at Hashimoto wondered if the upcoming PlayStation 3 and Vita re-rerelease of Final Fantasy X would be a "remake" (like the recent re-release of Halo: Combat Evolved) or a "remaster" (like last fall's Ico/Shadow of the Colossus collection).Hashimoto left little space for interpretation of his answer, directly stating it is a "remaster." He also pointed out that "the screen is much prettier than the original," though we're unable to corroborate that just yet as the game hasn't even been mentioned since its announcement last fall at Tokyo Game Show 2011, let alone shown. We've followed up with Square's US reps to see when we might hear more about the upcoming Vita and PS3 remaster, but aren't holding our breath for new info.[Image credit: GNN.Gamer.tw]

The title says it all. As one of the few well-received bits of news during this morning's Sony TGS press conference, Square Enix announced that it will bring the PS2 hit, Final Fantasy X, to the Vita and its big brother in remastered form. Details on exactly what this means were scarce, but we imagine it'll look prettier and prettier-er on the Vita and PS3, respectively.
