New teams are signing up for the NBA 2K League's second season before the inaugural run has even finished. The esports organization is adding the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, LA Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves to its 2019 season, boosting the total count to 21. You'll need to wait for the draft to see who plays on the basketball teams' behalf, but it's safe to presume they'll once again be chosen from a pool of qualifying players.

The line between eSports and traditional sports is blurring, and organizations like the National Basketball Association are looking to stay ahead of the curve. Seventeen teams from the NBA will be part of the upcoming 2K League, a competition it created in partnership with Take-Two Interactive, the developer of the popular NBA 2K series. And that league is going to have its first season next May, NBA 2K League Managing Director Brendan Donohue revealed to Engadget in a recent interview.

Almost four years down the line, GTA V is still drawing big crowds. And players are dropping a lot of dollar on the game's ballistic online mode. That cash is filling up the safes at Take-Two Interactive. The distributor announced on Wednesday that the latest instalment in the GTA franchise was key to it banking $418.2 million in net revenue over the past three months -- a 34 percent spike compared to last year.

The inaugural season of the NBA's "2K eLeague," featuring eSports teams owned by NBA franchises, is looking more promising now than when it was announced in February. Today, the NBA revealed that 17 of its 30 teams will participate in the eSports competition, which it created in partnership with Take-Two Interactive (developer of the NBA2K series) and is scheduled to begin in 2018. Earlier this year, the league had said it only expected about 12 NBA teams to join the project, but clearly it managed to get many more of them interested before launch.

With millions of gamers willing to watch people play League of Legends or FIFA for fun, major players in the entertainment industry see eSports as an intriguing business opportunity. Earlier this month, the NBA announced a partnership with Take-Two Interactive, developer of the renowned NBA2K franchise, to create a one-of-a-kind eSports league. This new professional gaming competition, known as "NBA 2K eLeague," will be the first owned by a major US sports organization when it starts in 2018. That's assuming the NFL, MLB or MLS don't make any sudden moves before then.

In 2018, the NBA will team up with Take Two (maker of the NBA 2K videogame series) for a groundbreaking eSports league. That's because this time, the actual NBA franchises will own eSports teams competing for the championship, similar to the way teams can own, or even share, Development League squads. There's no word on which teams will be the first ones to own one of the 8-12 initial teams in the "NBA 2K eLeague." Each one will feature five human players and the plan is to eventually have one for each of the league's 30 teams.

The Nintendo Switch looks like an impressive piece of hardware capable of going from the living room to mobile with the swipe of a hand, but it's nothing without a lineup of acclaimed, high-quality games and fresh experiences. In the Switch's debut teaser trailer, we got a glimpse at some of the software hitting Nintendo's new hardware, including a new 3D Mario game, a new version of Splatoon (look at those hairstyles) and a new Mario Kart featuring King Boo and two item slots. Of course we saw The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as well, but it was the third-party support that really stood out.

Progress from 'NBA 2K17' demo carries over to the full game

Game demos are awesome, but they're usually the intro section of any given game. More than that, once you actually have the retail version, you're stuck working through the same portion of the game over again before getting to the meat of the experience. Playing early is a double-edged sword. NBA 2K17 is doing something different come September 9th, though. With "The Prelude," you'll have early access to the basketball game's career mode and will be able to play college games, interact with coaches during the mini-narrative and affect how you'll start MyCareer when the game arrives.

  • NBA 2K celebrates Steph Curry's MVP with a 99 rating

Today Stephen Curry collected NBA's Most Valuable Player award for the second year in a row, and also became the first unanimous MVP in NBA history. To celebrate that achievement (and his epic return from a knee injury to score 40 points in a playoff win last night) NBA 2K will issue an update to its game on Thursday maxing out his overall rating at 99. It's part of a promotion along with his shoe sponsor Under Armour and naturally the MVP colorway of his Curry Two will be available in-game. The 99 rating will be in place for 30 hours at 6PM ET (matching Curry's jersey number) and for a little bit, should make it easier for the videogame to replicate the real-life player's abilities.

'NBA 2K' is having trouble capturing Steph Curry's greatness

When it comes to sports games, virtual players tend to be capable of feats no real person could accomplish. And then there's Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry. The reigning NBA MVP dazzles with new moves nearly every time he steps on the court, and Curry's real-life skills are giving the folks behind the NBA 2K fits. In an interview this week, the title's gameplay director Mike Wang admitted the studio is having trouble capturing the star's on-court antics.

  • 2K proclaims: our sports games will run in 60fps

Who knew 30 puny frames per second would spur such a huge outcry from gamers? 2K Games isn't taking any chances, and promises that their upcoming sports games, such as the NBA 2K series, will run at 60fps on both PS3 and Xbox 360. "Our [PS3 version] does run at 60fps," said 2K Sports PR Manager Anthony Chau to CVG.Admittedly, developers have had less time with the PS3 than with the Xbox 360. "It's pretty tough on PS3 but I think it's because most developers have had the Xbox 360 longer in terms of development than the PS3." However, if Sony and 2K Sports can develop games at 60fps, there's no reason why other sports games should be limited on the hardware. Thankfully, EA has already learned from their mistakes.
