Aniplex revealed it's streaming the anime on its own online channel, with new episodes promised every Thursday - there's no word yet on times but we can only hope they'll be aired at midnight. The presumably subtitled streams will also be available to watch on Hulu, Crunchyroll and Daisuki.

Vita JRPG Persona 4 Golden is going to have its own TV anime in Japan, following in the footsteps of Persona 4 The Animation. Atlus streamed a trailer for it today, which showed protagonist Yu along with Marie, the major new character added to the Golden re-release of the original PS2 game. The new anime is due to begin airing in July. It's a bit of a surprise move given the extra story content in Golden was supplementary and not particularly substantial, but let's take it in context. Atlus is releasing a dancing game spin-off, a dungeon crawling spin-off, and another version of its fighter spin-off for Persona 4, all in the lead-up to Persona 5. Maybe, in fact, it makes loads of sense. Update: The official site is up, along with the trailer.

  • PSN Store Update: Lego The Hobbit, Strike Suit Zero, Persona 4

This week's PSN update brings PlayStation systems the the smallest of people in their smallest versions, courtesy of the newly released Lego: The Hobbit. It's out at retailers for PS4, PS3, and Vita, but if you'd prefer a download version it's also on the PlayStation Store. That'll set you back $60 on PS4, $50 on PS3 and $30 on Vita, so if you're after the smaller of prices, King Oddball at $7 might pick your fancy. The physics-based puzzler has an Angry Birds flavor, except it has a floating rock head who chucks smaller rocks around with his bizarrely long tongue. Oh and he has a crown on his head. It's been out on Vita for a little while as well as iOS, Android, and a few other platforms, but this is its debut on PS4. PS4 also has the new Director's Cut of Strike Suit Zero for $20, while the PS3 makes do with a Sonic Unleashed download for the same price. If you're after a more palatable vintage, Persona 4 is this week's PS2 Classic re-release, meaning you can get it on PS3 for $10. Finally, Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark is the latest PS Plus freebie for subscribers, and Episode 3 of Telltale's The Wolf Among Us is available to PS3 owners, priced at $5. [Image: Atlus]

Confirmed: The Year of Luigi is over, and The Year of Persona 4 starts next week. Alright, Atlus hasn't announced a year dedicated to its revered RPG, but let's face it, an April 8 PS2 Classic re-release on PS3 for North and South America, priced at $10, is the start of a pretty busy period for the Investigation Team. After all, it preludes the ever-nearing arrivals of P4: Dancing All Night, P4 Arena Ultimax, and Persona Q - which stars P4 characters. If you like Persona 4, then the next year or so should have plenty to keep you satiated ahead of the main course that is Persona 5. To celebrate the news, here's six minutes of the Persona 4 Anime's take on the King's Game scene, except in this version the protagonist, Yu, is even more of a player... [Image: Atlus]

Team Joystiq is barging into 2014 with a celebration of last year's best games. Keep reading throughout the week to see our assembly of ingenious indies and triple-A triumphs. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon It's still hard to believe that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon exists, and perhaps that's why this standalone expansion is so great. Who'd have thought Ubisoft had it in them to greenlight a Far Cry 3 reskin that traded the 2012 game's colorful jungle and wicked undertones for 1980s neon, Michael Biehn, and dinosaurs shooting lasers out of their eyes? Not only does it provide a wonderfully excessive version of Far Cry 3's open-island action, but with its dumb humor and loving pastiches Blood Dragon crams an impressive number of standout moments into one bite-sized package; this passage of play (spoiler warning!) is without doubt one of my favorite moments from any game in 2013.

Atlus announced this morning that it'll publish Persona 4 Golden for the PlayStation Vita this fall in North America. The remake was announced for Japan late last summer, and now those across the Pacific will be able to enjoy it without a significant foreign language education. The Vita edition contains several upgrades from Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, the original, critically acclaimed PlayStation 2 title that came late in the console's life. Persona 4 Golden will receive visual and audio upgrades, including more voice dialogue, and an "online dungeon rescue feature" for players about to die in the alternate world. Finally, the developers have added new events, new personas and another character in "Mary."Update: Folks noticed at the way bottom of the official Persona 4 Golden website that there was trademark information for Kinect, Xbox 360 and PS3. Imaginations flared. Atlus tells Joystiq, "Just a simple copy/paste issue. P4G is releasing exclusively for PS Vita."

Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena won't be the only non-RPG way to experience that game's demon-filled, super-stylish world. Sentai Filmworks has licensed the anime series Persona 4: The Animation for North American release, with digital distribution beginning "soon," and a DVD and Blu-Ray release set for next year. It premieres in Japan on October 6. Persona 4: The Animation covers the events of the game in a distinctly less interactive format. It even features the same art director and composer, Shigenori Soejima and Shoji Meguro, as the game.

  • Report: Famitsu leak says Persona 4 coming to Vita

The Playstation 2's swan song, Persona 4, will reportedly be receiving a fairly hefty re-release on the PS Vita, according to Andriasang's recent leak of an upcoming issue of Famitsu. The massive RPG was well-received in the console's twilight months, and will only be massiver once its hits Sony's new handheld (under the subtitle The Golden). The site reports the version will include a new character named Mary, additional voice overs and some kind of wireless functionality that lets online friends help you out in a pickle. The magazine also reportedly announces Persona 4: The Ultimate In Mayonaka Arena, a fighter designed by BlazBlue creator Arc System Works for Xbox 360 and PS3. The title will let you brawl as select characters from Personas 3 and 4, and has a new storyline which follows the events of the latter game. Given the lineage of the developer and franchise, we assume that it's going to be absolutely bananas. Update: Famitsu has posted its full report on the games to its website. Go check it out for more details!

Who is Catherine? She appears to be the subject of a newly announced game from Atlus. Revealed in this week's Famitsu, Catherine is the first HD project from the Persona team, and it's going to both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The tale follows Vincent, a troubled insomniac plagued by nightmares involving a never-ending staircase. According to Siliconera, this action/adventure horror tale is "intended for adults." Katsura Hashino, the director of Persona 4, is helming the project, which is currently scheduled for a Winter 2010 release in Japan. [Thanks, thepapercut!]

After the completion of Persona 4, the team responsible for the game at Atlus split in two, with one half tasked with creating Persona 3 Portable, while the other half got to work on "an original new game." According to a translation by Andriasang of the P3 Portable creator's blog, that first game is "nearing completion," and the two teams will re-form [insert Voltron reference here] in 2010. Persona 4 producer Katsura Hashino says that the re-unified team will work on "an even bigger title" in the coming year, though no details have been formally announced. We'll just have to giddily think about the impending release of 3D Dot Game Heroes in North America, while we wait for Hashino to dish. [Via Andriasang]

The upcoming PSP version of Persona 3 features a nice easter egg for fans of the franchise. According to Siliconera, Inaba, the town featured in Persona 4 will be a playable locale in the upcoming port. You must play as the female lead in order to visit the Amagiya Inn -- two years before the events of P4. There, you'll be able to meet a younger version of Yukiko. Certainly, it's not the biggest news surrounding the game, but it gives us an excuse to post this video. P3P hits Japan next month.

You would assume, perhaps wisely, that a Persona 4 postmortem would refer to performing an autopsy on a poor soul who died of old age while trying to finish the epically long RPG. But all we've got for you today is the game's creators discussing the highs and lows of development with Gamasutra. As is usual, the "lows" are actually just the difficult parts of designing the game rather than what didn't work about the title, but it's still worth a read to see how Atlus tackled the Herculean task of creating a 100-hour game that at least some of you lived to see the end of.

  • Japanese gamers want Persona 4, Phoenix Wright anime series (and so do we)

Japanese gaming pub Dengenki recently polled its readers on what series they'd like to see translated into anime form. The Top 10 list looks nearly exactly the same as our own wishlist: 1. Persona 4 2. Phoenix Wright 3. Okami 4. Kingdom Hearts 5. Idol Master 6. Metal Gear Solid 7. Yakuza 8. BlazBlue 9. Persona 3 10. Atelier Rorona Atlus' PS2 RPG Persona 4 tops the list, managing to beat out some big names like Kingdom Hearts and Metal Gear Solid. Perhaps the success of Persona: Trinity Soul reminded readers that the franchise works in serialized TV format? While we'd certainly like to see another Persona anime, an adaptation of Phoenix Wright seems like a no-brainer. Capcom, are you reading this? [Via Andriasang]
