  • Breakfast Topic: Which Mists instance do you most enjoy replaying?

This morning's Breakfast Topic isn't as a simple as "Which new instance is your favorite dungeon?" We're pouring another cup of coffee because we want to hear which instance you most enjoy repeating, even if it's not your most favorite of the expansion -- because even the joy of an instance that utterly captivated you the first time through may dim after repeated assaults. As time goes on, which 5-man or scenario are you most open to (or even look forward to) running again and again? Disclaimer: The author of this post may or may not be known for making farming pacts with guildmates ("I'll reset and re-run this instance with you until raid time every evening until you get your drop if you'll do the same for me once we get yours!") and is therefore disqualified from making rational judgments on reasonable replay value for any instance. But surely there's more to replaying dungeons than grinding out points and shinies and rep, so let's turn our thinking away from loot for a moment. Don't use where your loot drops as a consideration. Which Mists dungeon or scenario are you most pleased to see pop up on your loading screen? What's the attraction? Is it the scenery, the encounter design, the story, or something else that keeps you coming back for more?

Seems like everyone's talking about trolls today; good, bad, tusked, or otherwise. Let's kick back with a rerun of RePlay by Quixotica. Get it? Do you see what I did there? Twice? Also, as a quick note, I really miss this version of the iPod. While Quixotica released this video for the trolls, she probably didn't mean the kind in forums on comments. For whatever reason, you don't see much machinima focused on our blue-and-tusk Azeroth trolls. It's a shame because the race brims to the rim with lore and character. And while RePlay isn't a lore video, I'll take what I can get. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at moviewatch@wowinsider.com.

  • Leisure Suit Larry won't finish early or on time, delayed to 2013

The HD remake of Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards is breaking out the slow jams. Its Kickstarter campaign successfully raised $655,000 last week, which means more content in-game and a longer development cycle in reality, Replay Games has announced. The title was originally slated to drop in October, but it has now been pushed to launch in 2013 so Replay can add "more rooms, another girl, and all new dialogue in the game."Founder Paul Trowe said Replay could probably make the game complete by December, but he wants to avoid the holiday madness and make sure it's fully polished at launch. He's set up a development blog for voyeurs fans to keep track of Leisure Suit Larry's progress.

  • iTunes Replay launch reportedly still far off

We've heard before that Apple may be working on a service for iTunes called "Replay," sort of a Netflix Watch Instantly-style service that lets you download and stream any movies or TV shows that you've purchased from iTunes. Obviously, with the iCloud infrastructure in place (and iTunes Match already announced and on the way out), it's not too big a stretch to see that actually happening. But if such a deal is underway, the latest reports say it won't be available for a while. CNET says it has been poking around film studios about such a deal, and at least six different major studios have yet to sign agreements for a service like this. Apple has indeed been trying to chase down agreements that would allow customers to stream purchased movies any time, but those agreements aren't done deals, and they'll need to be before this thing gets off the ground. The biggest sticking point seems to be a few older agreements with HBO and streaming service UltraViolet, which allow for some exclusive periods where only those companies can host digital downloads. Apple is probably willing to pay to unlock those periods, but studios aren't in any position to make deals happen fast -- they'd rather see demand (and thus prices) go up. At any rate, if Apple does want to make iTunes Replay happen, it still has at least one tough nut to crack here. [via iPodNN]

There's certainly no shortage of options available for those looking to record their death-defying (or not-so-death-defying) adventures, but Replay XD has now rolled out what it claims is the "smallest and lightest full HD action-camera on the market." That would be the XD1080, which measures 1.1 x 3.6 inches, records video up to 1080p / 30 fps, and can be attached to a helmet or just about anything else thanks to a range of accessories. You'll also get a built-in HDMI out port, and support for external audio sources (via an adapter) if you're not satisfied with the built-in mic. Still no word on a price, but that should be made known soon, as pre-orders are apparently starting tomorrow. Head on past the break for a sample video. Update: We've just been informed that the kit (including a handful of accessories and a 4GB microSD card) will set you back $299.99.

  • Team Fortress 2 'Replay Update' adds video recording and editing

Team Fortress 2 updates tend to be good news for everyone, and the latest one is no exception. If you actually play TF2, you can now download the "Replay Update," allowing you to save and edit video replays of your matches, share them on Steam and upload them to YouTube. The update also brings new achievements and, like everything else that happens in this game, new hats. But if you don't play Team Fortress 2, you still get a hilarious comic. You'll also get some entertainment in the form of the "Saxxy Awards" -- Valve is offering prizes for the best videos in 20 categories. If you think you can record a really spectacular death, get to it! You have until May 19. If you don't want to contribute, just get some popcorn.

  • Ads in Angry Birds cause some squawking

    by

Rovio's Peter Vesterbacka was pretty outgoing at GDC a few weeks ago, claiming that "it all works" when it comes to ad-driven business models on the App Store. But he might be relearning that lesson the hard way right now -- after an update to Angry Birds HD on the iPad added a "News" section in the replay screen that advertises other Angry Birds products, some users have gotten their feathers ruffled. That "News" section takes a while to load, and it must come up every time a level needs to be restarted, which means some players have raised their voices and voting fingers on the official iTunes listing. There's a few issues here -- first, we've seen in the past that most users don't actually mind ads in iPhone apps, as long as they don't mess up the flow of the app. It sounds like Rovio didn't quite plan this one correctly. Users who need to replay levels a lot (like those trying to max out their star totals) are seeing the ads quite a bit and losing that loading time every time, which creates frustration. Second, this is a free update to a paid app, and users who had already paid the US$4.99 for it are now frustrated that they're seeing ads, even if they are just for other Angry Birds products. So what's Rovio to do? The company has had success already with ads on the Android version of the app, but that was originally a free download. Given that the iTunes ratings are definitely suffering (the latest version only has 2.5 stars, as opposed to all versions' 4.5 stars), Rovio will probably have to put its ads elsewhere, either in the main menu of the app or out of the paid app completely. It seems like Vesterbacka and company have finally found a model for Angry Birds that doesn't work that well.

Was your recent aerial quarrel with Ultimecia in Dissidia: Final Fantasy particularly thrilling? Are you doing the world a disservice by hording the replay footage for yourself? Don't let this burden hang on your shoulders for a second longer -- Square Enix's official Dissidia site now supports Battle Replay uploading. It seems like a fairly simple process, and there appears to be a small community springing up around these videos -- but are you guys really interested in watching other people play so soon after the game came out?

And honestly, who knows how they'll turn out in the end anyway? br> I'm in closed beta for some of those games but if the WAR beta taught me anything it's that I'm not much of a beta tester. I have a pretty casual gaming schedule and I'm certainly not interested in spending it in buggy and/or temporary environments.

You might remember me from such internet adventures as "Author of TheGreenskin.com," the now-defunct but first dedicated WAR blog, and "A somewhat elusive gobbo of Phoenix Throne!" Welcome to my little experiment: Snafzg returns to WAR. You see, I haven't played the game for quite some time, so I'm going back in for one month (with an open mind) to give it another shot. Some historyWarhammer Online and I have a history dating back to October 2007. I hadn't played an MMO for over six months and was starting to feel the itch again. A long-time gaming friend told me to check out WAR because he was currently in beta and the game was slated to be coming out soon. I started doing research and got so engrossed that I started a blog about it.The game was delayed one month later. Bah! I thought, but I at least I have the first dedicated WAR blog. Let's make it grow while we wait. And wait I did. The game was delayed again from Q2 to Q3 2008. At this point though, I was in beta, so I could wait. To be honest, I felt the game needed a lot more time in the testing facilities anyway. Delaying was a good thing.

  • Arsenal fans could catch replays, live action on Sony's PSP

As we're confident that you know, one of the biggest downsides to catching an event in-stadium is the inability to see instant replays. Oh sure, a few venues play back sequences for the fanatics in attendance, but you'll still get a much better angle from the comfort of your own couch. English soccer club Arsenal is hoping to remove that obstacle from fans' minds by testing out an instant replay system with Sony's PSP. In theory, at least, a Sony-developed application would enable patrons to "watch live streaming video of a game, along with data and statistics, and provide the ability to watch near-instant replays." 'Course, we've already seen Bluetooth added to venues and a similar system as this installed at Safeco Field, but we still envision this being a hit if it's really rolled out within 18 months as planned.[Image courtesy of Panstadia]

  • DirecTV replay still available, showing tomorrow

Reader Stephen dropped us a note to let us know that if you missed the DirecTV stream of BlizzCon the first time around, you've got another chance tomorrow: they're going to show the whole thing again starting tomorrow morning. Seems pretty meh to us -- from what we heard, the stream wasn't all that great. And what you missed in terms of official panel information, you can get right from us here on the site. Anybody hear otherwise? Is this worth watching at all?Of course, even if it's not, there is still one reason to order it, and that is of course the BlizzCon bear. Apparently people who purchase this replay will still get a code good for an ingame bear, and given that the bear and the Starcraft II code from the convention is going for as high as $200 already on eBay, shelling out $40 for just the code might be worth it to you.And you'll pick up 16 hours of high-quality video along with it -- who wouldn't want to see Ghostcrawler in HD, right?

read up on this collection here The phrase "all good things must come to an end" doesn't always apply when it comes to gaming. Not all games have ends, precisely; games with certain types of multiplayer functions, or puzzle games and similar titles, could probably be played forever, provided you don't grow tired of them. But let's talk about those games that do have a definite ending. When you've saved the princess, completed all the side quests, killed the Weapons, stopped the apocalypse, and gotten the girl/boy/kingdom, what do you do? Sell it? Lend it to a friend? Keep it for later replay or collecting purposes?

  • Rumor: Brawl rewrites history

And no, not in the way you would expect Brawl to rewrite history. Instead, forum posters over at NSider2 have (allegedly) discovered an unusual glitch in replays of their fights, namely that said replays are showing totally different fights. While the characters and stage remain the same, the moves being executed and the eventual victor are often different. To demonstrate this, NSider2 member Warchamp7 uploaded a video of the glitch in action (which he finds "very scary"), and the replays do seem to vary. Barmy stuff. So far, this has only occurred on a particular custom-made stage, and not on any of the game's default, Nintendo-themed levels.Due to the wonders of video-editing and it being that time of year again, we're marking this down as a rumor, but has anyone here encountered similar issues? %Gallery-10206%Read: Original NSider2 forum thread (registration required).Read: Warchamp7's YouTube demonstration.[Via Go Nintendo]

A primary concern of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (or, at least, that of this blogger) is the incredibly rampant cheating. In the past, use of an Action Replay wasn't a horrible offense ... your team would be uber, and a couple of your personal friends might be a bit ticked, but that was all. These days, in the era of Wi-Fi, ridiculously impossible trades litter the GTS. What, you don't have a Level 100 shiny Palkia? Well, hmph, you can't have my Level 7 Munchlax, then. For honest players, or those that don't have access to hacking tools, such Pokemon would take days to train up and impossible luck/determination for one with shiny status. That's why we're happy that Nintendo is cracking down on some Action Replay users, specifically ones using the "All 493 Pokemon," "All Shiny," and "National-Dex" cheats. They will henceforth be banned from online barter.Feel free to start a flamewar regarding the justification of cheating, by the way. We're pyros.

  • Harris to hook 31 NFL stadiums up with HD instant replay

Although instant replay has its fair share of supporters and critics, it's here to stay in the NFL, and if you're hoping that the grainy SD playback that refs have to review might lead to a beneficial miscue, don't count on it. The NFL has teamed with Harris Corporation to install 33 NEXIO HD servers (plus 33 more for redundancy), an HD version of FORCE (Football Officiating Replay Challenge Expeditor) software, and routing / distribution gear that will enable officials to look back at questionable plays in "stunning high-definition." Every NFL stadium but three -- the ones "being replaced" in Irving, TX, Indianapolis, IN, and East Rutherford, NJ -- will be equipped with high-definition equipment and recabled "before the upcoming season." As expected, such (potentially superfluous) upgrades won't come without selling quite a few grossly overpriced sodas and soft pretzels, as it's estimated to cost each club around $300,000.Read - NFL Instant Replay becomes permanentRead - Harris to provide HD equipment to NFL

London's Arsenal fans better pack their PSP systems with them when traveling to their next game. Sony is introducing a prototype streaming program called S.PORT which will allow PSP owners to see replays, stats and other game scores via a wireless feed within the Arsenal Football Club."It will allow you to check to see whether or not a player really was off side", said Eric Siereveld, Director of Retail Transport Venues at Sony. There's a lot that Sony will have to address before the program goes live, such as whether or not it can work on other devices. If the services proves popular enough, there's no reason not to expand it: "It could be used at any stadium around the UK, or even a golf match where it is sometimes hard to see the ball flying through the air."According to Pocket-lint, a trial is expected to begin shortly.[Via CNET]
