Disney's next batch of 'Star Wars' movies starts in 2022
Disney hasn't quite wrapped up the Star Wars Skywalker saga, which will come to an end this December with Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker. However, it's looking ahead with the franchise, as it updated its release schedule with dates for three new Star Wars films. The first will hit theaters in December 2022, followed by December 2024 and 2026. They'll alternate with the Avatar sequels, the first of which arrives in 2021 (it was previously scheduled for December next year).
A new 'Star Wars' trilogy is coming from 'The Last Jedi' director
The Last Jedi helmer Rian Johnson has signed on to write and direct a new trilogy within the Star Wars universe, Disney announced today. There aren't any details to share about the new project yet, but the company explicitly noted that it'll feature new characters and be completely separate from the Skywalker saga. If anything, the new spin-off trilogy is a sign that the company was pleased with his work on The Last Jedi, which hits theaters on December 5th.
'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' behind the scenes footage is here
After offering up a quick look at Star Wars: The Last Jedi in April, Disney gave us a further taste at its D23 Expo today with a new behind the scenes reel. More than anything, it sets the mood for what looks to be a particularly dramatic film. According to director Rian Johnson, fans might find some aspects of The Last Jedi "shocking."
'Star Wars' first spinoff is 'Rogue One'; Episode VIII due in 2017
Because every movie must have its own cinematic universe, Disney is expanding the reach of Star Wars -- as we expected when it purchased Lucasfilm a few years ago. While we wait for Episode VII to arrive later this year (the most recent teaser trailer is after the break), today at a shareholder meeting Disney's CEO Bob Iger announced details for two more movies. The first Star Wars movie taking place outside of the core saga will be Rogue One. It's written by Chris Weitz (Antz, About a Boy), directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), and so far has cast actress Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything). It's scheduled for release December 16, 2016, while the next big Star Wars saga film, Episode VIII will arrive the following spring. Written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), it's coming to the screen on May 16, 2017. This strategy has been (mostly) well executed for the Marvel movies, we'll find out soon if Disney can recapture the magic of the original trilogy.
