Unlock your PC with your Samsung phone's fingerprint reader
Have a recent Samsung phone and a Windows 10 PC? Life's about to get a bit easier. Samsung has updated its Flow app to let you use the fingerprint reader on Galaxy devices running Android Marshmallow or newer (such as the S6, S7 and S8) to log into any Windows 10 PC using Hello, not just Samsung's own Galaxy TabPro S. If you regularly keep your phone on-hand, you won't have to enter your password every time you sit down at your computer.
Samsung's cross-device sharing app arrives on Google Play
Last November, Samsung introduced Flow, which lets users seamlessly share activities between devices. (Yes, much like Apple does with Continuity.) And while the software still isn't fully baked, the South Korean company is now letting people give it a try -- so long as they have compatible Android hardware. The beta application, available on Google Play, offers a taste of what Flow can do, like allowing you to start reading an article on your smartphone, pause it and pick up where you left off on, say, a tablet. Flow Beta is only available to some Galaxy devices at the moment, and Samsung's encouraging developers to make their apps compatible with its new feature as soon as possible.
Samsung's 'Flow' ties devices together like Apple's Continuity
Samsung makes a lot of products, from wearables to phones to large-screen televisions. So why not try to tie everything together? That's the idea behind Samsung's Flow, which could be seen as the company's answer to Apple's Continuity. Announced today at Samsung's Developer's Conference, Flow lets you move tasks from one device to another and even do things like view incoming calls and messages on your Samsung TV. There are essentially three components: Transfer, Defer and Notify. Transfer lets you do things like read a shared article on your tablet or move a video call from your laptop to your phone. Defer lets you put off a task until you're ready, so you can fix that PowerPoint slide when you get to work, or pick up that movie on your phone when you're in the subway. Last but not least is Notify, which as we mentioned, lets you view notifications on any screen, be it your watch or your computer. You'll even get device status updates on your television, for example, so you can see if your phone is running low on battery. The Flow SDK was just released to developers today, so don't expect to see this feature on your Galaxy-branded device just yet.
