  • Rumor: Tatsunoko vs. Capcom FightStick, game bundle on the way

[Comic-Con mockup; see retail box on Flickr] Tatsunoko vs. Capcom proves that the Wii is a perfectly capable platform for fighting games -- except that it doesn't have a high-quality arcade stick. If these box images found on MadCatz staffer Mark "MarkMan" Julio's Flickr stream are any indication, the company behind the Street Fighter IV FightSticks is going to take care of that. Julio posted two images of a retail box for a Tatsunoko vs. Capcom FightStick using the same shape and layout as the company's Standard Edition Street Fighter IV FightStick for PS3 and Xbox 360. It would seem that response to the Comic-Con mockup (seen above) was positive enough for the accessory manufacturer to go ahead with a retail release! The stick may be included in a special bundle for the game, as well. One Shoryuken forum user claims to have found both a normal and arcade stick bundle SKU in the GameStop database. We've contacted Capcom and MadCatz to find out just how we'll be controlling a giant lighter in a fight against Mega Man. [Via NeoGAF]

  • A ridiculously detailed guide to the changes in North America's Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.phpWe know about the "big picture" changes made to Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for the North American release (and the Japanese re-release to follow): online play, new characters, no Hakushon Daimao. But those aren't the only changed. In every iteration of its fighting games, Capcom tweaks tiny behaviors and damage effects to balance the game. The fighting game obsessives at Shoryuken have produced a list of minute changes that will affect how the game works. For example, the Megacrash move (which pushes the opponent to the opposite side of the screen) now pushes up in addition to away. And Roll's air dash is faster. Check out the wonderfully informative post for plenty more details that we never, ever would have noticed. %Gallery-73852% [Via GoNintendo]

  • Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate Box Art of All-Stars

Capcom has finally uploaded the massive box art for its latest Vs title onto the internet: Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars. It's very similar to the Japanese box art for the original release, in that it's a bunch of the game's characters set against a white background. The difference between the two is that our localized version shows the characters staring each other down, likely thinking about how they're going to kick the crap out of each other. What a violent world these folks live in, eh? Head past the break for the full box art. %Gallery-32421%

  • We get beaten up at Capcom's NYC Fight Club so you don't have to

So what if you weren't able to make it out to Capcom's second annual NYC Fight Club last night? Don't worry, we went -- and got trounced by the competition -- in your stead. Though Super Street Fighter IV was only there for Capcom to demo (and give a small handful of community members time with), we snapped pictures of everything. We also played a mess of Tatsunoko vs Capcom in a next to final build (yes, we put the two recently revealed characters through their paces), and even shot some video of legendary Street Fighter player turned Capcom employee Seth Killian demoing new SSFIV characters in front of a roaring crowd (550 or so people over the course of the night, a rep approximated for us -- more than double last year's attendance numbers). As we weren't able to get our hands on the three new fighters being showcased (Juri, Deejay, and T. Hawk), we talked to Jamal Brewster, a gentleman who exchanged kindness for some time with Deejay during one of the night's four live demos. "He doesn't feel cheap or overpowered .. he does feel good though, like he belongs in the game -- a lot of his moves have been retained from previous games," Brewster told us, echoing sentiments from Seth Killian earlier in the night. But how did you get chosen to play the game, you lucky dog? "One of the representatives here, she was almost passing out in the corner over there, and a friend of mine and I noticed this, so we did our best to try to help her out. We sat her down, gave her some water, and the people here were so grateful that they offered me a chance to play Super Street Fighter IV and they gave me an autographed hoodie of Tatsunoko vs Capcom." In case it wasn't already clear: Yes, Capcom Fight Club is most certainly for the fans. Hit the break for a video of the new characters in action (sorry about the quality -- it was really dark) and be sure to peep the gallery below -- it's just like you were there! We'll have a hands-on of Tatsunoko vs Capcom's final two characters later on. Promise.%Gallery-76410%

  • Zero and Joe the Condor are the last two Tatsunoko vs. Capcom characters

IGN revealed today that the leaked Tatsunoko vs. Capcom character roster update was almost 100% accurate in predicting the characters added to the North American version (and the upcoming Japanese re-release). Joe the Condor (yet another Gatchaman character) and Mega Man X's pal Zero have joined the lineup. Only Yatterman #2 is unaccounted for. This isn't Zero's first appearance in a fighter; he appeared in his Mega Man Zero style in SNK vs. Capcom: SvC Chaos and Onimusha Blade Warriors. This is, however, his first appearance in a good fighting game.Check out footage of both new characters in action after the break. Rather than being a simple palette swap of Mega Man Volnutt, Zero's attacks use his trademark energy sword. And Joe has a grappling hook/gun combo.

  • Watch Frank West chop his Tatsunoko vs. Capcom opponents 'til they drop

There are some things we all know about Frank West. He's covered wars (y'know), enjoys the potent effects of a well-blended smoothie and, with a mean 5 o'clock shadow, looks a great deal like Niko Belic. But, what you may not know is that despite lacking an entire mall's worth of weaponry, the dude is still a pretty solid fighter. Even though we've already put together some words detailing the man's moves in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, it's always nice to actually see that thing we talked about in motion. So, head past the break for a gameplay video of Capcom's Seth Killian demonstrating West's moves for GameSpot. [Via Capcom-Unity]

  • TGS 2009: Hands-on: Tatsunoko vs. Capcom vs. that guy from Dead Rising

My usual delight in playing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars was tempered by a note of skepticism at TGS. I knew that the build being offered would include Frank West. He's an admirable character, to be sure, and skilled at using retail goods to fend off hordes of zombies, but I wasn't sure his improvisational violence would translate well to the hand-to-hand, superhero-vs-superhero combat in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.Let's face it, the cel-shaded Frank in this game doesn't look great. All the other characters look like excellent 2D sprites, but Frank looks like a weird 3D model. However, Capcom has made a respectable fighting-game character out of Frank; one that borrows from an obvious source in Capcom fighting game crossover history: Marvel vs. Capcom 2's Jill Valentine. Frank shares Jill's ability to summon a zombie from either side of the screen, which will grapple with the opponent (or Frank) upon contact.%Gallery-73852%

Everyone's favorite wartime photojournalist and Dead Rising protagonist Frank West was just confirmed to be a contender in Capcom's upcoming inter-franchise brawler, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. This news comes two weeks after a number of the game's assets, which indicated the appearance of West, Mega Man series regular Zero, and a bunch of anime characters we absolutely do not recognize, were leaked. You can check out a video demo of West's brawling expertise after the jump. Know where he learned to fight that well? Probably from his recent encounter with the unyielding zombocalypse. (What did you think we were going to say? "Because he's covered wars?" That just doesn't make any sense. Think before you speak, silly goose.)%Gallery-73852%

Shoryuken forum user mumu recently went snooping around the Japanese site for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and uncovered some interesting items. Within the source code of the character section of the site, mumu found lines of code hinting towards the remaining secret characters: 'images/oncharactor_btn_zero.jpg' 'images/oncharactor_btn_frank.jpg' 'images/oncharactor_btn_yatter02.jpg' 'images/oncharactor_btn_joe.jpg' 'images/oncharactor_btn_tekkabla.jpg' So, aside from yesterday's Tekkaman Blade, mumu postulates that Dead Rising's Frank West and Zero from the Mega Man series are also going to be in the game and, on the Tatsunoko side, we'll get Yatterman #2 from Yatterman and Joe Asakura from Gatchaman. If you'll excuse us, we'll be crying in the corner, objecting once again to the lack of Phoenix Wright.[Via Siliconera]

You know how Capcom said that the North American and European releases of Tatsunoko vs Capcom would have some new faces not seen in the original Japanese release? Well, you could be looking at one of them from the Tatsunoko side as reader Vincent tipped us on the above scan. Vinny says the dude is Tekkaman Blade, who originally appeared in what is known as an anime. We're not sure what this anime is or what it does exactly, but as soon as we crack that code, we'll be sure to let you all know. While we do that, be sure to keep those fingers crossed for our pal Phoenix Wright.[Thanks, Vincent!]%Gallery-32421%

Capcom have revealed it will announce four new characters for the US and European release of Tatsunoko vs Capcom at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show. The four characters -- two from Capcom and two from Tatsunoko -- were teased to Gamespot at GamesCom by producer Ryota Niitsuma, but the game's producer would not name the additions. We're still holding out hope for some Phoenix Wright love, even though the fighting game's dev team claimed the character was once added but removed due to balance issues.Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars adds an improved online mode, with skill level matchmaking allowing US and European players to face-off against gamers from around the world. A release date has yet to be revealed for the Wii-exclusive, but we're almost positive that whatever it is, it won't be soon enough.%Gallery-32421%

Honestly, we're only about 50 percent sure we believe Ryota Niitsuma when he explains why video game lawyer Phoenix Wright didn't get the chance to battle in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, but we thought you should decide for yourself. The producer told NGamer that Phoenix's one attack -- shouting at his opponent -- would have been a fine size in Japanese ("igiari" can be written in four characters), but when translating that shout to the 10 characters in "Objection" ... well, we should let Niitsuma explain it: "When we localize, the balance of the game gets destroyed because the move becomes bigger. There'd be no way of avoiding it! We had to remove [Phoenix] for these reasons. In the future, it is one of our aims to get him in."OK, upon re-reading, we're now 99 percent sure that he's joking. Still, it's funny, right? Read the interview for yourself here, or, better yet, just go buy the magazine.[Via The Escapist]

  • Capcom reveals GamesCom 2009 lineup, safety hazard

Capcom has dropped word on the titles it plans to feature at the GamesCom Conference in Cologne later this month, and (for the most part) the games feature a hearty scoop of violence. Kicking things off with the oft-delayed Dark Void, Capcom will feature Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars, Monster Hunter Tri and Spyborgs for the Wii, along with Lost Planet 2 and MotoGP 09/10 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. To promote the Rocketeer/alien battle simulator Dark Void, Capcom is hosting an event in which attendees can take flight in the Dark Void Body Flying Machine, a rigged, vertically-oriented airstream shooting gamers into the air at speeds of up to 180km/h. Luckily, Capcom is also sponsoring taxis throughout Cologne, so if something goes wrong during its "sounds like a tremendous idea on paper" gamer cannon event, attendees can make their way safely to the emergency room. GamesCom runs from August 19-23 in Cologne, Germany.

  • If there's a Tatsunoko vs. Capcom sequel, it will be on Wii

There aren't any concrete plans for a sequel to Tatsunoko vs. Capcom yet (but it's Capcom, so there will be a sequel), but producer Ryota Niitsuma has some ideas about one, as revealed in an interview with Siliconera. Asked whether a followup game would appear on the Wii or HD consoles, he said "As the way I'm seeing it now, the sequels will be on the Wii as well." He actually had some nice, fan-friendly reasoning for the declaration, different from his earlier statement about technical issues keeping the series on Wii. "If people are going to invest in this game, like we want them to," he said, "they're going to go out and buy arcade sticks. It would be a disservice to fans to just put out this one game that they buy sticks for and then they have nothing more to play."Niitsuma also spoke a little more about the absence of Hakushon Daimao and the plan to replace him with "around three to four, maybe more" and the difficulty of designing online games for Wii.

  • Confirmed: no genie character in North American Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

    07.27.2009

Hardcore Hakushon Daimao fans: in case you haven't already, you should probably import Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Producer Ryota Niitsuma confirmed to Siliconera that Hakushon Daimao, the big genie character, won't be in the North American version. This is the "minor pruning" to which Capcom previously alluded."We had some licensing issues with him so we weren't able to obtain him for the American version," Niitsuma told Siliconera. Apparently, the original Hakushon Daimao show ran across the world in the '70s, so the holdout could be any number of companies. Niitsuma said that "new characters" would replace Daimao -- confirmation of the "five new characters" promised on Capcom's press release (which was later reissued with no mention of new characters)? We can only hope that one of those characters will feature Daimao's math minigame. Or not, actually.

Don't get too excited: the lovely Mad Catz Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Standard Edition FightStick above isn't real. It's a "non-playable mockup" that Mad Catz is showing off at Comic-Con. Capcom-Unity reports that Mad Catz is soliciting feedback about the stick -- presumably not only about the design, but about the level of interest among Wii owners for a high-end arcade stick. Yes, please! We were wondering if Mad Catz would step up to support Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Currently, our only arcade stick option in the US is the Hori Fighting Stick Wii, and that's getting hard to find. We'd love to be able to, like, go to a store and buy a nice arcade stick.

From the comfort of your own home, you'll be able to watch people like national Street Fighter IV champion Justin Wong and the legendary Daigo Umehara deliver swift punishment to so-called "competitors" in games including Street Fighters III and IV, Soul Calibur IV, SSF2THDR, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, and more. If you do happen to make it to Las Vegas's Rio Resort and Casino, you'll be able to play the first public demo of PSN/XBLA Marvel Vs. Capcom and more on the tournament's demo stations.

  • Tatsunoko vs. Capcom clips cause billions in damage

    by

    07.13.2009

The best part of Capcom's Vs. fighters isn't the character roster, though of course Vs. games tend to have awesome selections. No, it's the ridiculous, super-fast aerial combat. Unfortunately, if you're not directly engaged in said combat (or even if you are), it can be way too frantic and flashy to understand. The Tatsunoko vs. Capcom clip above, and the other after the break, demonstrate this issue. Yatterman and Doronjo (from the Yatterman anime), and Saki and Morrigan (from Quiz Nanairo Dreams and Darkstalkers, respectively) go into battle, and then ... a bunch of stuff happens, causing billions of unspecified units of damage, and then suddenly it's over. We don't really know what happened, but we know we want to be involved in it.
