Taking a bullish approach to the competitive world of smartphones, Sony's head of mobile told reporters earlier today that the company wants to claim third place. Yep, not first or second (Apple or Samsung, depending on your metric of choice) but the other guy -- enough to make it on the podium. IDC recently ranked Sony in fourth place for the last quarter, claiming 4.5 percent of the mobile market, ahead of ZTE, but behind Huawei and those aforementioned smartphone sovereigns. Kunimasa Suzuki added that the company's plan might involve humbler models pitched at developing nations. Hopefully those cheaper Xperia devices will arrive soon, as Sony's running out of letters. And heck, there's nothing wrong with third place.

This music video by "Dead Workers Party" won 3rd place in the Ataris music video contest, and it's pretty neat for its blending of real acting and machinima. There's quite a bit going on here under the surface, with more than enough innuendo too, revolving around certain fantasies some players have. There's even a surprise ending about their many players' worst bone-chilling fear.

  • Third-party publishers are wary of the Wii

So, like we predicted, many third-party publishers are rather anxious about jumping into the Wii scene. Many feel as though Nintendo's own games compete directly with their own. To an extent, they're correct: trying to compete against games like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros Brawl is almost impossible, no matter how good a game is. But looking at the relative dearth of titles recently, it seems as though there's quite a bit of time to release a decent title. On the flip side, this is a conducive environment for smaller studios, such as Crossbeam Studios and NIBRIS. But can these games match the quality of the big boys? Only a magic 8-ball time will tell.

For those of you who find adventure to be the spice of life, we've got one worth $6.71 USD. See, these Hong Kong cables, available for pre-order from superufo.com (they release on the 30th), look the part and are available at an insane price. Still, we've always been told if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. Applying that lesson, we cannot bring ourselves to order them. Any of you willing to take the plunge or have you already made your own? Maybe third party products aren't your thing and you're going to wait out Nintendo's stock?[Via Joystiq; thanks to all that sent this in!]

  • Third party games for 40 bucks?

A forum post discussing the recent Nintendo management briefing is stating that third party titles on the Wii would be releasing for $40 a pop. With the already established low development costs of working with the Wii, this is a believable rumor. If this were to turn out true, we could see Nintendo's first party titles selling for $50, which would make not only the hardware more affordable than the competition, but also the software, adding more fuel to the flame of thrifty thrills that the Wii is generating. So I know I won't have to break my piggy bank to get the console, but let's hope I won't have to for a few games either.[Via iBloggedThis; Thanks yon!]
