  • Breakfast Topic: What do you think about the new holiday boss style?

We've come to expect our holiday bosses to work a certain way here in World of Warcraft. Once every few months, we get a chance to go queue up for a unique boss that drops some nice loot to provide easy upgrades for casual players, and we get a daily package with a chance at some sort of fun pet or mount, as well as a BoE weapon. This has been a very nice arrangement for all involved. This year on Winter Veil, Blizzard muddied the waters a bit. Rather than put the boss in a dungeon, Blizzard put him right smack dab in Alterac, uninstanced, and made the daily package come from a daily quest. Now, if you want to kill him, you have to fly out to him and grab a group, then take him down.

  • The Anvil of Crom: Deconstructing the dev update - PvP Edition

It's been quite a while since I devoted an Anvil of Crom entry to deconstructing one of Craig Morrison's monthly Age of Conan development updates, and what better time to resurrect an old tradition than on the heels of one of the lengthier producer letters in recent memory. The end-of-July document took a decidedly pro-PvP approach, and since I've been spending the majority of my game time on the new Blood and Glory server lately, reading between the lines on the bossman's latest state-of-the-game manifesto seems like the thing to do. Join me after the cut for a bit of discussion on PvP, the future, and a bunch of interesting bullet points.

  • Wings Over Atreia: Boss world tour -- Inggison

Back in January, Wings Over Atreia brought you the first installment of a series highlighting the who, where, what, and even some how of Aion's world bosses. At that time, we took a tour around the land of Heiron and met up with those tough (and some not-so-tough) bosses who taunt players with their juicy, coveted loot. But Heiron is for youngins; this week, we will focus our tour on the playground of the highest levels, the lands of Balaurea -- specifically, Inggison. It never fails -- the best goodies are never the easy-to-get goodies. As much as Daevas may want to get their hot little hands on some of the weapons, armor, and crafting materials dropped by these world bosses, they have to first find these giants and second actually defeat them. So much easier said than done. On the bright side, some of the mobs are easier to kill and can even be soloed (although they are also well-camped). On the not-bright side, others don't seem to show their faces as often as hungry loot-hunters would like, or they take a friend or 20 to take down. So what's a Daeva to do? Soar past the cut for some tips, tricks, and a handy map for seeking out those Inggison bosses and convincing them to give up their loot.

While many places here in the northern half of the world are dealing with crazy cold temperatures and snow that seems to go on and on, folks from around the world are facing the cold in a completely different way. Players who like to check out incredibly cute MMOs have the option of facing off against this frosty boss in Iris Online and seeing if their skills are up to the task, as today's contributor, Brett W., did. He writes in to explain the image: "This is an image of me waiting for members of my guild, Devotion, before we take down the open world boss Glaceon the Ice Queen." Do you have any terribly adorable scenes or images of battle? (Perhaps you have both at once like this Iris Online screenshot?) If so, we'd love to see it. Just email it in to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. We'll post it out here and give you the credit for sending it in. %Gallery-85937%

  • Cataclysm to include outdoor heroic 5-man bosses

In vanilla and BC, there were world bosses like Azuregos and Doomwalker that spawned out in the open world and could be taken down by a raid. While these bosses were often farmed by the highest progression guilds on the servers, they were often so quickly killed and so long in respawning that not many players got to see them. Now, in Cataclysm, a new take on this idea is being implemented. Valnoth - Re: Thank you for the outdoor raid bosses Q u o t e: No, I'm not being sarcastic. I am genuinely happy that they have been brought back in Cataclysm since they really do play a part in developing a server's community, especially when there is more than one guild that's capable of putting out enough people to down them. And going by the health of the current ones, they seem to be balanced towards a 10-man raid which means a lot of people will be able to actually have a shot at getting them. Here's to some competition and some good-natured trash-talking between guilds come Cataclysm. \o/ There are a COUPLE of these bosses in Cataclysm, but they're not true outdoor raid bosses. They're just much harder group bosses that drop heroic dungeon level items and specialty items. Have fun! source Valnoth later responds to a player's concerns that these bosses will definitely be doable by a five-player group and are not intended as true raid bosses. Frankly, while I loved farming Azuregos, the Dragons of Nightmare and Kazzak back in the day, it was really a drag trying to do them with smaller-than-optimal raid groups in order to beat other guilds. There was a lot of griefing, and the spawn rates were terrible. Hopefully, with their being made heroic 5-man quality, they'll be able to spawn more often and more people will have a shot at them. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it; nothing will be the same! MMOSite brings word of a few new boss sightings on Aion's Korean test servers. These bosses, part of the recently released 2.0 update, include Kaisinel's Agent Vielle and Marchutan's Agent Mastarius, as well as the nasty final boss from the Debris instance at the core of the Abyss which requires a 12-man group and plenty of coordination. Additionally, a new rock-themed world boss has been sighted, as well as the Red Tear dragon, the latter of which reportedly reflects player damage and must be killed in under one hour. Drop by MMOSite for the full article as well as a selection of screenshots from the test server.

  • Breakfast Topic: Who could be a new world boss in Cataclysm?

One thing that was missing from the Wrath expansion, conspicuously or not, was a world boss on par with those such as Kazzak and the Emerald Dragons. For better or for worse, Blizzard completely removed them from the game, reserving the massive figures towering over the landscape for instanced quests or dungeons. Blizzard touched a bit on why they've not used world bosses in Wrath in the recent Twitter developer chat. They observed that there are issues with the bosses that have prevented them from feeling comfortable making more world bosses, such as issues with groups racing to bosses, or the ability of people outside raid groups to deliberately mess up boss attempts. On the other side of the coin, though, they did imply that they like world bosses, and will probably implement more in Cataclysm if and when they can find a satisfactory work-around for the problems.

  • One Shots: Slaughter at the Lunar Festival

Today we have a wild screenshot from the Lunar Festival in World of Warcraft from Edward. (No character name given, but we know he's on Bronzebeard.) Apparently people were dragging Omen (the large two-headed dog) onto the lower-level players teleporting into Moonglade -- and having a great time watching Omen eat them. Here's what Edward had to say:This was my first experience at the Lunar Festival in Moonglade. That's Omen coming down the path, raining one hit death on my poor Mage (not pictured). I'm on Bronzebeard, but I'm sure other servers looked similar. I wish I'd caught an earlier picture of the carnage. It was easily four times this many skeletons littering the ground. Fantastic.Having been in similar situations where big nasty things ate our face, we can certainly sympathize. How about you? Do you have any screenshots of massive carnage and mayhem that you'd like to share with the rest of the world? Send those puppies (no pun intended) to us here at oneshots@massively.com. Your picture could be the next one we feature!%Gallery-9798%
