Courtroom drama adventure game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies has arrived on iOS and following our unveiling earlier this week Capcom contacted us to outline the game's episodic pricing scheme. If you visit the App Store, you'll find Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies features a "Free" price tag. Like many iOS releases, Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is free-to-play, but if you want the full experience, you'll need to shell out some hard-earned money. While the first episode of the game is available for free, the remaining four episodes of the game are priced at $5 a piece, though players can also purchase all five episodes at once for $15. And what of the game's bonus episode? According to Capcom, the additional, full-length scenario, "Turnabout Reclaimed," is likewise priced at $5, though it's included at no extra cost if you spend $15 to buy the full game. • We have no objections to Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies on iOS

Capcom's Phoenix Wright games are all about meting out justice wherever and whenever villainy rears its ugly head, so why not take that propensity for due process on the go with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies? Oh, you already can, because it's on 3DS? Well why not take it on the go in HD with Dual Destinies for iOS devices? According to a post on the Capcom Unity blog, Dual Destinies is slated to arrive on the western App Store "quite soon." The 2012 Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney HD collection for iOS featured a pricing scheme where introductory chapters were free, but we're unsure if Capcom will do something similar for Dual Destinies. Aside from the fact that it will play in high-definition, no details were given about the game. Ah, well. Let's take a short recess and come back to this when we know more. *bangs gavel* Article adjourned! [Image: Capcom]

  • Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies 'Turnabout Reclaimed' trailer is a rap

Mustachioed female pirates, killer whales sporting matching mustaches, rappers taking the stand, and some killer puns. What else could it be, apart from a typical day at Joystiq, but new Turnabout Reclaimed DLC for Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies. It's out now on the 3DS eShop, priced $6.

Ready those objection poses, because Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies receives DLC episode Turnabout Reclaimed next week on on November 21. The additional content is priced $6. The DLC features Phoenix Wright's first case after getting his attorney's badge back, which means the return of spiritual medium Pearl Fey. It also stars the wonderfully named pirate Sasha Buckler, who asks the lawyers to defend a friend who's been accused of murder. Her friend just happens to be a killer whale. It seems unfair that in his first case back Phoenix has to counter murder charges against a client that literally has the word "killer" in its name. Sometimes you just get thrown in at the deep end.

  • Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies Review: Still appealing

    by
    Susan Arendt

Silliness and cleverness: To reach one in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, you'll have to wade through plenty of the other. Longtime fans of the spiky-haired litigator already know to expect the bizarre cavalcade of characters, the tenuous interpretation of juris prudence, and the long-winded speeches that have become the blueprint for the series' success. The silliness can be a bit (heh) trying at times, but the clever payoff of each mystery adequately counteracts the groans you'll utter while getting there. If you've gone to court with the members of the Wright Anything Agency before, you can feel free to skip on ahead, but if you're new to the team, prepare to spend a great deal of your time with the game reading. Lying somewhere between visual novel and classic adventure game, Dual Destinies has you searching crime scenes, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses ... at great length. The characters you encounter seem to enjoy nothing more than nattering on and on about everything except what you actually need to know, amusing you with their so-quirky-it's-painful personalities. Buried within those lengthy confabs are the clues you need to win in court, but you'll swiftly find you're dealing with a somewhat nontraditional approach to adventure game mysteries. In many cases, an opening cinematic reveals whodunnit before you have to make a single argument in court. Your duty, then, is not so much to solve the crime as it is to figure out how to poke holes in the seemingly air-tight case against your unlucky client.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies will be the first installment of the Ace Attorney series to use full 3D graphics, a change Art Director Takuro Fuse has detailed at length on the Capcom-Unity blog. Fuse described the team's first attempt to bring Phoenix into the third dimension as "cringe-worthy," but by refining character aesthetics and utilizing "slick camera work," Fuse and his team were able to show off a "new, hybrid Phoenix" that successfully merged 2D and 3D art. "I hope when you get the chance to play the game that you'll play it with the 3D volume all the way up," Fuse wrote. "Nothing would make me happier than to have you experience it in all its glory!" Phoenix wasn't the only character to go through several designs, however.

No objections here, your honor. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies is set to appear October 24 on the 3DS Nintendo eShop in North America and Europe as a downloadable game. The M-rated Phoenix Wright will take the case for $29.99 (€24.99), which also makes his team the most inexpensive firm, like, ever. Capcom reiterated that the overseas release of the game will also "receive the costume pack and additional episode," Turnabout Return, which is available in Japan. The company will not make the "quiz" DLC available. When asked if "receive" means the content is included in the purchase or at an additional fee, Capcom said it would share further details soon.

  • Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies 'quiz' DLC not headed west

It's emerged the Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies DLC Capcom recently confirmed for the west is missing one component from the Japanese version. Capcom Unity's Chris Antista took to the comments section of the DLC's announcement post to clarify that, while the case and costume content is confirmed, the 'quiz' DLC isn't coming to western versions because it "requires an in-depth knowledge of Japanese culture." As Siliconera reports, the Japan-only content features a "deduction quiz" set at the Wright Anything Agency office, with three pieces of DLC dated for August 1, 8, and 15 priced ¥150 (around $1.50). Given the price, it seems a fairly insubstantial amount of content, although we're sure our in-depth investigations of Tokyo would make the quiz a cinch (coughonest). As for the western versions, there are no further clues regards the price of the DLC that is coming. We suspect the matter will remain adjourned until a bit nearer the 3DS game's appearance on the eShop, scheduled for sometime later this year.

Capcom has confirmed on its official blog that the DLC episode and costumes recently announced for the Japanese version of Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies will also make their way to western territories, sometime after the game is released on the 3DS eShop this fall. No release date was given for the extra content as no release date yet exists for the game itself, although Capcom did divulge that the bonus episode is entitled "Turnabout Return." It also dropped a small handful of screenshots of the bonus costumes, which we picked up and put into this-here gallery. There was also no word on pricing, or whether the costumes and extra episode will be sold separately. What we do know, and this is perhaps the most important thing, is that there's an orca whale with a mustache and a pretty pink star on its head.%Gallery-194685%

Capcom has confirmed to Joystiq that Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies has been rated "M" for Mature by the ESRB, making it the first game in the series to be given such a designation. Previous entries in the Phoenix Wright mythos have all been rated "T" for Teen. "Due to the nature of the various crimes and storylines in this latest title in the series, ESRB deemed the title an M," a Capcom representative told us. The ESRB, which declined commenting on its reasoning behind the game's rating, has labeled it with the same "Blood, Violence, Suggestive Themes, Language" descriptor given to the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies will be available exclusively through the 3DS eShop sometime this fall.

The Japanese 3DS eShop will host a new demo for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies next month, according to Gematsu. When contacted regarding the potential for a North American demo, Capcom provided the following statement: "We haven't announced any plans for a Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies demo in North America at this time." Dual Destinies launches on the 3DS eShop in Japan on July 25; the North American localization is due some time in autumn.

Japan is getting a bit of exclusive Nintendo Direct love this week. On Friday, May 31, Nintendo will broadcast a presentation that will focus on 3DS games Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies and Monster Hunter 4. The Direct, which you can watch here, begins at 8PM in Japan (4AM PT, 7AM ET, midday Brit-time). Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies has its release date of July 25 in Japan - it's scheduled to come west to the eShop this autumn. Monster Hunter 4, however, is still undated, so maybe this week's Direct will see its summer window upgraded to something more concrete.

Capcom VP Christian "Sven" Svensson has shed some light on why Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is destined solely for the 3DS eShop in the west. Responding to users on the Capcom-Unity forums, Svensson stated that while he understands "the value" of owning a physical copy of a game, "it is a sign of the times that increasingly our business is going digital and not everything is going to be in both formats." "Not every game is appropriate for both formats given the economics involved," he wrote, pointing to games like Darkstalkers Resurrection, Resident Evil 4 HD and Okami HD, which were released physically in Japan but digitally in the west. "Their COGS (costs of goods sold) and retail margins and reserve issues are entirely different there given the market differences," wrote Svensson. "It's a sad fact, but it's still a fact." He added Capcom's US operation "worked very hard" to see Dual Destinies released in the west. "If we'd said 'no, it's not coming', it would have triggered the inevitable 'please bring it to eShop, at least' cries. Instead we shortcutted that and brought it straight to eShop." In other gavel-banging news, a playable browser demo of Dual Destinies is now available on the game's Japanese website. Just make sure your Kanji is up to snuff if you hope to make heads or tails of it. Finally, Gematsu reports that the latest Famitsu confirms that both Miles Edgeworth and Trucy Wright will make a return appearance in the game.

Ace Attorney 5 will be released July 25 in Japan, with a special edition containing a Phoenix Wright figurine (to scale with the Edgeworth figurine released alongside the sorely missed Ace Attorney Investigations 2), a 3DS case patterned after the colors of Phoenix's suit, and as yet unrevealed decorative stickers with chibi characters on them.Various permutations of the special bundle omit the figure and/or case; it's almost certain that none of these bundles will ever make it out of Japan. However, we were able to import this new trailer just fine! We'll note that, in an unfortunate coincidence, the trailer begins with an animated sequence depicting a bomb going off.

Ace Attorney 5 for 3DS features a new emotion reading system, provided by Wright Anything Agency's latest addition, Kizuki Kokone. We first got a glimpse of Kokone and her ability to read people's emotions in this trailer, but now Capcom provides more information about her powers and personal background, as translated by Siliconera.Kokone's Heart Scope ability allows her to listen to the emotions behind a witness' testimony and suss out the truth behind contradictory statements or lies. The Heart Scope pulls up a screen with four emotions and a lot of "noise;" players must clear the static by finding discrepancies between different combinations of testimonies and emotions. Once the noise reaches 0 percent, that emotion reading becomes a fact for the case.Ace Attorney 5 features full 3D animations for the first time, including within the courtroom and during investigations.
