It's a big week for the PvP sandbox Das Tal, as the title has hopped on board the good ship Steam Greenlight in the hope that it will gain more attention and support from the community. Das Tal has also finished up its first round of alpha tests in July, with more to come every Sunday in August. The team pieced together a video from the alpha to show off some of the title's looks and combat sequences. The devs stress that many of the graphics are using placeholder images, but if you can stomach that, you can get an early peek at the game after the jump.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Final Fantasy XIV is doing its best to make a really positive second impression on the gaming community as a whole, but it's still not going to get as much popularity as it might have had without the original launch. The game has an uphill battle to fight, and it needs to really wow people. This is something I've discussed before. If you haven't read it before, go ahead and do so; I think it's a pretty good piece. Right now, the game needs to show something off that is really unique, something to make people sit up and say, "Oh, now that is neat." Obviously the game isn't testable yet for many of us. But we have seen the first several alpha test videos. And my reaction thus far has been... well, I haven't actually been sitting in front of my screen with my head in my hands while cursing, but I've considered it as a possible course of action.

  • Sir, You Are Being Hunted by Stealthy Alpha Footage

Budding super villains may want to rethink the whole army of robot henchmen thing. If this Sir, You Are Being Hunted footage is any indication, the robot intelligence and its sudden noise investigation skills leave a lot to be desired. In one encounter, a robot is dispatched by a bear trap. Those things aren't even designed with robots in mind!In Sir, You Are Being Hunted, you're tasked with surviving on an island that is procedurally-generated, dodging robot hunters out to get you and scavenging for food along the way. Sir, You Are Being Hunted reached its Kickstarter goal two weeks back and currently has 12 more days to go before the crowdfunding campaign comes to a close.

A good steampunk MMO is sort of a holy grail for some of us Massively folk, so we're excited to bring you the news of another one in the works. Black Gold Online is the title in question, and it's currently being developed by Snail Games. If that name doesn't ring a bell, consider that the firm is behind the upcoming Age of Wulin Wushu free-to-play martial arts MMO. According to MMO Culture, Black Gold will pit two rival factions against one another in a struggle for control of a world divided between nature lovers and technologists. We don't know a whole lot of gameplay details yet, but we'll keep our eye on this one. Don't forget to check out the Russian server alpha footage after the cut.

  • Gaijin releases World of Planes screenshots and trailer

World of Warplanes isn't the only free-to-play World War II aviation title spooling up on the flight line, as Gaijin has just released a new trailer and a bevy of screenshots for World of Planes (yes, that's the actual name). If the new assets are anything to go by, World of Planes will be pretty stiff competition. Despite an intertitle that says the in-game footage is from an alpha build and not representative of the final product, the clip is pretty impressive. We're treated to a bird's eye view of a squadron of Dauntless divebombers making their way towards a Japanese ship convoy, and there are a couple of obscure aircraft on display (including the Brewster Buffalo and a Rufe, which is basically an amphibious version of the more famous Mitsubishi Zero). Gaijin seems to have an eye for detail as well (note the operating dive brakes on the Dauntless and the exposed wing rib on an Me 109 above, and in the screenshot gallery below). You can learn more at the game's official website, and don't forget to check out the four-minute trailer after the cut. %Gallery-126603%

  • A first look at the Love alpha

Ever since I first heard about Love at GDC, I've been hoping to get a chance to check it out. The graphical style floats somewhere between impressionist and Abstract, with only the suggestions of people and things. Gone are the "customize your character heavily" moments of an MMO. You simply log in and your character is immediately created - an amorphous entity ready to take part in all that Love has to offer. If you like to explore, Love has that. If you want to help build a mighty settlement, you can do that too. Alternately, if you want to run around blowing NPCs (and their settlements) off the map, that's also an option. While it is a paid alpha - something some may balk at, and others find quite reasonable considering Steenberg is developing Love solo - the game offers an interesting twist on MMOs as we know them. It's a little bit adventure game, a little bit cooperative civilization building, and a little bit FPS. How you get through the game - through fending for yourself or working with others - is entirely up to you. At 3 EUR per 30 days of paid time (approximately $4.50 US) it's worth checking out if you're curious. If, however, you're just interested in looking in on Love from afar, we have two videos full of our very own beautiful alpha Love exploration footage behind the break.
