A special edition of Ask Cryptic for Champions Online is out now and it features Bill Roper answering all sorts of highly interesting questions. The most interesting answer from Bill concerns his involvement with the game, as it's now beyond concept and initial design stages. Apparently, Bill's past experience at Blizzard involved coming in during the polish and release phase of a game -- which is something he was never involved in at Flagship. That and the continued support for future content will be Bill's role at Cryptic with concern to Champions Online. Oh, he also expresses an interest in doing voice work for the infamously awesome Foxbat. Intriguing. The other thing we took away from this was that the game is getting pretty close to beta, which would mean that it's on track for an early 2009 release date. We must admit our shock at the possibility, as most MMOs suffer at least one delay during the development process. Could this one prove to be an exception to the rule? We certainly hope so.

  • Diverting information from shields to weapons in newest STO Ask Cryptic

This edition of Ask Cryptic is especially interesting for Star Trek fans wanting to know how combat is going to play out in Cryptic's Star Trek Online. We now know that it will be possible to divert power from one system in the game to another. So a player will be able to drop engines by 40% and boost weapons with that diverted power, allowing them to make a heavier attack.Related to this is the new knowledge that there won't be a "mana bar" style power system in the game. Players will never have to worry about being able to fire their phasers because their energy is too low, but of course if they divert too much power from said phasers they won't be hitting very hard with them. Another possibility -- although unconfirmed as far as we know -- would be if your phasers were damaged too much from concentrated fire. Finally, we're happy to hear that Cryptic is certain that a grouping of smaller ships will definitely be able to take down a larger battleship. This means that Star Trek Online's leveling system will not be the norm, another plus for anyone hoping that the game won't be "WoW with starships" or anything of the sort.

  • Customization and community power in latest Ask Cryptic

Character customization seems to be the big focus in the newest Ask Cryptic for Champions Online. Questions about multi-limbed heroes (not at launch) and different stances to give your character (big yes!) receive the more strikingly straight-forward answers. It wouldn't be a big leap of logic to imagine that four-armed characters will eventually be possible, with the revealing of Grond (pictured above) last Halloween. We also learn that Cryptic is planning for plenty of wings and tails from the get-go, which should please a lot of players. However, the most interesting question asks Cryptic whether or not any of these community questions have actually changed their minds concerning design decisions. The response is fairly frank, with lead designer Randy "Arkayne" Mosiondz saying that fan response has definitely shifted the way that the team was implementing certain things. He goes on to point out that there haven't been any complete re-designs of systems, though. It's not surprising that Cryptic's listening to their community, as they've always been a rather smart developer in that way.

  • Revealed: Star Trek Online ship classes and more customization

It's that time again! The latest issue of "Ask Cryptic" has found its way onto the internet. It includes answers from the development team to six Star Trek Online-related questions. Here's the critical information up front! The ships in the game are based off of canon ships such as the Enterprise and the Defiant. Ships will be divided into three categories: Cruisers, Escorts, and Science Vessels. Any player character will be able to train to use any ship, although his or her specialized crew and attributes will affect its performance. Starfleet and Klingon uniforms will be highly customizable, as will bridge officers (including name, race, appearance, and gender). Ground PvP will be in the game, and PvP instances probably will be too. Finally -- and perhaps best of all -- the article teases playable Horta and 3D chess games as planned-for post-launch content. But how can the Horta play 3D chess with no appendages? Oh, they don't necessarily mean they'll be playable at the same time. Okay. Or do they?

  • Ask Cryptic explains how Star Trek Online will handle canon

The latest Ask Cryptic focusing on Star Trek Online addresses a number of questions sci-fi fans have about where the IP is heading in the MMO space. Not surprisingly, many of the questions asked of Cryptic deal with how well they'll adhere to Star Trek canon. The Cryptic Studios devs were asked about how they would handle the iconic story and characters of Star Trek, namely with voiceovers and cut scenes. The devs state that Star Trek Online avoids issues of tampering with Trekkie canon by setting the game in 2409, a good 30 years after Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek: Voyager. So while some of the locales familiar to Star Trek fans will be present in the game, players shouldn't expect to bump into any (or many) familiar faces.

The very first Ask Cryptic leveled at Star Trek Online takes some time to address cannon questions about the game. With regards to whether or not Cryptic plans to make the game as close as possible to the official canon, worry not. They're watching and re-watching all the TV shows and movies to make sure your Gorn attacks are as authentic as possible. They've also received all the sound effects featured in the movies and TV series from CBS. So your phaser blasts and teleports will sound pitch-perfect. As for the music, Michael Henry -- Cryptic's director of audio -- has been a huge trek fan for a long number of years. So plan on hearing music both new and old that helps recall you to many a days spent watching Star Trek.Other answers include adherence to exploration as an "integral" and encouraged aspect of the game, not just a side thought. We really like hearing that said. Although, what we especially like hearing is further confirmation that extensive customization (a Cryptic trademark, really) for both interiors and exteriors of player ships is definitely part of the game. Now we can finally dress our Klingon ships in bright pink stripes, oh happy day!

The newest Ask Cryptic for Champions Online is out and you know what that means: more information! This time around, we start off with some news about weaponization of objects within the game world. The short answer is that players will be able to grab all sorts of stuff and chuck it into the faces of their enemies Next we've got confirmation that players will indeed be getting additional power sets after Champions Online launches. We're glad to hear it, because it's quite exciting when a new patch is about to hit with all sorts of new powers to play with inside.Moving away from the more mechanical workings of the game, Cryptic lets us know that roleplaying will indeed be supported through social hot-spots in Champions Online. If you've ever played around with City of Heroes for very long, then you'll know that Atlas Park was -- aside from a newbie zone that featured a big dude carrying a globe -- a great place to hang out and chat with all sorts of people. As cool as these reveals are, the next one is probably the biggest and best news from this iteration of Ask Cryptic.

  • Ask Cryptic touches on player-created content

Every time Cryptic puts up a brand new Ask Cryptic article we have a tough time picking only one or two answers to talk about. However, this week was pretty easy. The very first question presented asks about how deep Champions Online will delve into the concept of player-created content, whether it be mods or actual in-game content. Jack Emmert responded reasonably by mentioning that the Nemesis system, costume creation, power selection and power customization features are merely the beginning. Apparently we that we can, "look to see [Cryptic] continue to open the door for more player-generated material." Which really makes us wonder what that means for Star Trek Online. We must admit to this being an exciting proposition. It's our hope as comic book and MMO nerds that there's a future where we can submit completely unique costumes to go through moderated approval for each of our crazy characters in Champions Online. Or even custom animations! That would be unequivocally and unabashedly awesome. Don't disappoint us now, Cryptic.

  • Leveling and numbers in newest Ask Cryptic

    07.15.2008

The most recent installment of Ask Cryptic starts off on the topic of levels and how player characters will progress through them. While no exact count of how many levels we can expect to see in the game was given, (though our guess would be somewhere around 50) we are told how characters will generally progress in the superpowers department. If you've played City of Heroes, then you probably have a semi-good idea of where you'll start off in Champions Online. Cryptic says they want to start players with a few starting powers and gain both more powers and customization options as they level. This is of course all part-in-parcel with the whole "MMORPG thing" anyhow, so nobody should be surprised by the revelation.Another good question was whether or not Champions Online would allow players to see hard numbers on their abilities, something that min-maxers are the biggest proponents for seeing. The short answer is yes, so any of you hoping for that can rest easily while the rest of us wonder just how much we'll get to accessorize our superheroes.

The questions for this week's Ask Cryptic come in incredibly specific flavors, making their answers all the more interesting. We get some information on how user-friendly the combat system will be for non-twitchy types, a bit of insight into how modular the new game engine will be, some talk about making sure solo players fight villains that aren't simply re-skins of old mobs and a whole lot more. Overall we'd say this is a good week to be interested in Champions Online. The last question is one that we were really happy to see answered. It asked simply, "Is eye color going to be a costume option?" The answer that Cryptic gave was more than we were expecting, however. Not only will players be able to change the pupils and whites of their character's eyes, but they'll also get to make their eyes glow any color they want. We can only hope this is something that's offered at the beginning of character creation, since glowing eyes are a priority for alien-, magical- and robot-powered superheroes.

  • Ask Cryptic: Iconic costume pieces in Champions Online

It's not surprising that there continues to be a lot of questions regarding customization and variety within Champions Online in each week's Ask Cryptic. Anyone who has played City of Heroes is bound to wonder the same things about Cryptic's newest MMO. This week there aren't any groundbreaking revelations about game mechanics, but a lot of little interesting answers. The one answer we find most interesting pertains to costume options related to important characters such as Defender or Jusiticiar. Forum poster Belstaffar asked, "Will heroes like Defender and Ironclad have unique one of a kind costumes, or can I make a fan boy hero that looks similar?" Which we fond to have a fairly surprising answer. The lead character artists Absinthe tells us that while iconic piece of their costume -- such as Defender's helmet -- won't be wearable, certain other costume pieces will be available to players. This makes us wonder if we'll see supergroups that all dress similarly to specific characters within the game, acting as a sort of "Defender Force" in roleplay terms. We certainly hope so, because nothing say cool like coordinated costumes.

  • Cryptic reveals more about Champions Online costumes

Cryptic has been dropping details on their newest outing in the superhero genre, and the future is looking brighter all the time. In yet another Ask Cryptic segment, three of the fine designers for Champions Online (Arkayne, BraiNEateR, and Continuum) have revealed some more information about their game by answering questions from the community. There's some interesting news on what raids will be in the game, how statistics will work, and how the Champions universe will fit into the MMO realm. The big news, though, is the costume creator. In a vast improvement from the already robust CoX creator, Champions Online will allow for up to 4 colors per costume piece. Not only that, but players will be able to assign materials, textures, and bump-mapping to each individual piece. Want some rivets on a metal trenchcoat with canvas texturing? You got it! In addition to this, costumes now have far more asymmetrical options, allowing you to make a character who has, say, a huge left arm and a tiny weakling right arm. This news just pumps us up more for Champions Online, because when you hand that kind of power to the community, beautiful things are made. And some hilarious things too.

  • Ask Cryptic: What kind of options will Champions have?

    05.02.2008

The newest edition of Ask Cryptic, on the official Champions Online site, delves into the customization options we'll have in the upcoming superhero MMO. Arkayne and Sporkfire combine powers to answer questions asked by fans in the forums. Probably most interesting is the clarification that archetypes only provide a 'framework' for a character's powers; they don't restrict them. That is, a "Brick"-type character (the party's tank) will get bonuses when using defensive powers. By the same token, though, they can still use energy projection or martial arts-type powers. They just won't be as effective with the Brick as when used by a Martial Artist.Other questions delve into the role of min/maxing in Champions, using advantages and limitations. They also discuss the options we'll have to make inhuman characters in the character creator, and what kind of website features the game will ship with. That last sounds very promising, as they're looking at everything from social networking elements to character pages to see what will best fit the game.

This week's Ask Cryptic is kind of all over the place. While there may not be a nicely organized cohesion to the questions and answers, there are some very cool new bits of information. Last week the community finally got their answer on the subject of custom animations. That is: tweaking and adding personality to your typical energy blasts and martial attacks. The verdict was unfortunately no, as that something of that nature would be far too time consuming for the animators to tackle. This is true, animation -- the high quality kind -- takes quite some time to get just right.

Behold, a new 'Ask Cryptic' is here to appease all who have been awaiting it! It is again time for Cryptic to answer community questions about Champions Online -- this week is especially interesting as we've gotten some fairly insightful answers. Everything from how Cryptic is adapting the Chapions paper and pencil IP to whether or not players can expect custom power animations and the reason why is discussed. Of course, the most interesting question ends up being about the biggest problem facing a game like Champions Online -- class balance. With an open system where players can grab any type of powers they like, a lot of thought has been and is being put into making the game as balanced as possible.

There are many reasons why Cryptic Studios is awesome, one of those reasons is for letting us all live out our superhero fantasies -- the other is because of how involved they are with the community. When other developers are eschewing the very medium which subscribers and fans can get intimate with developers -- Cryptic is doing everything they can to make great use of it.Recently, forum posters on the official Champions Online boards where given a stickied thread where they could hurl as many questions as they wanted at Cryptic. After the proper amount of question firing was complete (probably somewhere around or beyond the 100 range) select few questions were answered in length and the entire thing was posted to the main page on the official CO website. It's all very exciting!
