Gamestop will offer $50 trade-in credit to PowerUp Rewards members who buy a new, Xbox 360 version of a game and then trade it back in for the Xbox One version. The promotion is valid for the Xbox versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Madden 25, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4 or Assassin's Creed 4. In order to be eligible to receive the trade-in credit, patrons must be PowerUp Rewards members at the time of the initial purchase, which must take place within 30 days of the game's release date. Then, upon trading the game in for the Xbox One version, the customer will be emailed a coupon that grants $50 trade-in credit for the Xbox 360 version, for use when upgrading to the Xbox One version before December 31 of this year. No mention of the PlayStation 4 was made in the press release, so whether a similar offer will be made for PS3/PS4 cross-generation games remains to be seen. Update: Gamestop has informed us that the $50 coupon is delivered in tandem with the purchase of the Xbox 360 version of the game, rather than after the upgrade to the Xbox One version. This article has been altered slightly to reflect that information.

  • Aveline is 'a bit older' in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

The Aveline featured in the PlayStation-exclusive content coming to Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will be an older heroine than what we've previously seen in Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation. Ubisoft has revealed that Aveline will have three missions, each taking place some time after the conclusion of Liberation. "It's a ways forward so Aveline is a bit older," Ubisoft lead writer Darby McDevitt revealed during a panel at Comic-Con that has since been transcribed on the Ubisoft blog. "It's not directly related to the end of her story. If Assassin's Creed 4 is like a novel, Aveline's missions are like a short story." Aveline is of French and African descent, born to a wealthy French merchant and his African common-law slave wife in 1747.

Ubisoft sent out a new batch of screens from Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's multiplayer modes, highlighting The Dandy and Puppeteer. The Dandy is a battle-tested fancy man donning a theme-appropriate eyepatch, while The Puppeteer looks like she's more suited to cutting strings than pulling them.

Demonstrating how protagonist Edward Kenway transitions from one gameplay style into the next, this extended look into Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's caribbean playground has enough privateering antics to make Captain Jack Sparrow comically stumble his way into a pre-order. The game's action-stealth techniques, naval combat and treasure hunting mechanics are all shown off, in addition to the sea's deadly storms and the British's inability to do anything other than be ruthlessly murdered by the same bloodline. We also learn that Kenway's ship is manned by the happiest group of pirates ever featured in a gritty, realistic setting, and that treasure chests are buried in no more than two or three inches of topsoil.

Ubisoft has shown off the treasures to be found inside the Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag Limited Edition. The booty in the box includes a copy of the game, an 18" statue of protagonist Cpt. Edward Kenway, an Assassin's pirate flag, art book, steel case and the game's soundtrack. The limited edition will be available on PlayStation 4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions have a set date of October 29, with a price of $129.99. We think it's only fair that Ubisoft also bury a couple (potentially free) limited editions around the country and provide a map to dig them up. Arrrrr, that be the true way to obtain a game about pirates! %Gallery-193930%

Best Buy details a season pass for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag highlighting pirate protagonist Edward Kenway's first mate, Adewale, as a playable character. The Best Buy listing says this content will take players "even deeper into the real explosive events of the Golden Age of Pirates." Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's season pass will cost $20, Best Buy says, and will include both single-player and multiplayer content. The cost for these packs piecemeal is $40 according to the listing. Season passes are hardly new to the Assassin's Creed franchise. In Assassin's Creed 3, season pass content revolved around an alternate story focusing on a tyrannical King George Washington. Ubisoft has previously stated PlayStation platforms will have exclusive Assassin's Creed 4 content highlighting the story of the Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation heroine, Aveline.

When the PS4 and Xbox One wash up on the shores of retailers, one bit of available booty for both will be Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. At E3, game director Ashraf Ismail told ElderGeek the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the new Creed will be "launch titles" on both. Ismail also noted the PC version was due "a few weeks" after the current-gen console release date of October 29, although he added that he wasn't sure on that. A slight delay on PC would follow the pattern of Assassin's Creed: Revelations and Assassin's Creed 3, as well as Ubisoft's time-honored tradition. E3 also saw Sony announce exclusive PS3 and PS4 content for Assassin's Creed 4 that is set around the Aveline character from Vita entry Liberation. Ismail told us the bonus content resumes her story where Liberation left it, all thanks to the magic 'science' of the Animus.

During Sony's E3 press briefing, VP of third-party relations Adam Boyes said that playing as Aveline will be an "exclusive PlayStation experience." Presumably, that means she will be playable on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions, though Boyes did not reveal any further details.

McFarlane Toys will produce hidden-blade gauntlets modeled after those seen in Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series. This faux perforator, shipping this fall through GameStop for $40, is modeled after the signature weapon used by protagonist Edward Kenway in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. "I think from a distance people will go 'Whoa, what is that?' When you press the spring it actually shoots out, like a blade should," artist Todd McFarlane told Kotaku, subtly undermining the self-esteem of blades that don't shoot out like a blade should. "Then you get to the end and realize you can curl the tip on it, so it's not going to do any real damage."

"The next generation of consoles will reinvigorate our industry and make it possible for us to deliver incredible new entertainment to gamers," said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. "Our teams are using the innovations in connectivity, immersion and social gaming included in Xbox One to create original and memorable next-gen gaming experiences."

I am a monologue trailer. I'm going to say things in a deeper than natural voice. I'm also going to wait ... (wait, no wait some more) before I finish a full sentence. I'm going to tell you how cool I am between quick flashy edits of me stabbing dudes. Yes, I am a protagonist and I'll finish off by saying something supposedly profound.

If the paranoia weren't already palpable of young students raising their hands in history classes to correct their teachers about how Ezio dealt with the Borgia family, or how Connor handled Washington, now Assassin's Creed's marketing is passing itself off as "true stories." This'll end well.

  • Assassin's Creed 4 protagonist aspires to be a 'man of quality'

"Edward Kenway is a raucous and bawdy chap," Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag lead scriptwriter Darby McDevitt told Polygon, "but he's also a married man, and one of his primary motivations in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is to get rich and prove himself a 'man of quality' to his family and betters." Kenway wants to chart a course to respectability - at least in the eyes of his time - and his tenuous marriage will serve as one of the central narrative threads in the game. McDevitt also mentioned gameplay will be "more open and free than ever before," reflecting Ubisoft's earlier missive about the game paying heed to "the older philosophy" of the series. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will be available on Wii U, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 29, 2013.
