Years have passed for legendary assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze since avenging the death of his family for Assassin's Creed 2. Relaxing in his villa in Monteriggioni after a romp between the sheets with a lady friend, Ezio is shaken out of a peaceful cuddle. An attack on the town is in full swing and -- after a cannonball crashes through his bedroom, crushing his armor -- Ezio rushes out to find waves of enemy forces at his doorstep. Outside his home, Ezio's uncle explains that his status in the region as a legendary assassin has split factions and incites a war between families. To counteract the mass-scale attack, Ezio pushes toward defensive cannon emplacements scattered on the wall of Monteriggioni. It isn't a scene that will end in the assassin's favor; rest assured that Monteriggioni will fall. This is the beginning and the basis for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. %Gallery-95487%

Play.com (UK) has added a special edition version of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, continuing the franchise's tradition of rather elaborate "collector's editions." The box goes for a hefty £69.99 -- a full 75% more than the standard game! Are these features worth it?

During a pre-E3 Ubisoft event a few weeks ago, I checked out Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's multiplayer mode. The good news: it works. Ubisoft has successfully translated the running, jumping and stealth-kill gameplay of the single-player game into a functional multiplayer experience. The bad news: we only got to play one match, and it's not clear just how durable the gameplay is. But as a first time experience, it was quite impressive as a feat of multiplayer game design. %Gallery-95284%

Jack Tretton just announced during the Sony E3 press conference that Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood will not only receive exclusive content on the PS3, but will also receive exclusive access to the game's multiplayer beta. We're not sure what that content will feature, but if we were to wager a guess, we'd say "it includes more things you can stab."

Are you anxious to get back into the Animus and step in the shoes of everyone's favorite paisano assassin, Ezio Auditore da Firenze? Ubisoft has announced Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's release date: November 16. The news was slapped on the end of the game's E3 trailer, which emerged on YouTube earlier today. You can watch it past the break. Taking place years after the events of Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood tasks players with revitalizing Rome, circa 1503. Oh, and killing lots of dudes. It wouldn't be an Assassin's Creed game otherwise, right?

  • Assassin's Creed creative director Patrice Desilets leaves Ubisoft

Patrice Désilets, who is credited as creative director on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, both Assassin's Creed titles and a handful of other Ubisoft Montreal projects, has left the company for a "creative break from the industry," Ubisoft confirmed yesterday. The publisher explained to Game Informer that Désilets' role as creative lead on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is "essentially done," and that he's no longer involved with the completion of the game. The factors which contributed to Désilets' departure are still largely unknown. We'll try to find answers when we get some facetime with Ubisoft later this week at E3.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed during the Q&A section of the publisher's recent financial earnings call that the upcoming Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the first game to add a multiplayer component to the series, would undergo a period of beta testing. "We have not announced exactly the date yet," he said, "but yes, we will have a beta test." Guillemot promised that more specifics would be announced at E3. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is scheduled to arrive during Holiday 2010.

  • GameStop pre-orders of AC: Brotherhood include Harlequin bonus character

The description of the "GameStop exclusive" Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood pre-order bonus seems apt for the terrifying Harlequin character: "Behind the gaudy costume and twisted smile lies the soul of a merciless assassin. You call yourself the Harlequin. Your victims will call you a walking nightmare." Presumably the whole "walking nightmare" thing is because you're a "merciless assassin," but for us, the clown makeup is sufficiently horrifying in its own way. No details have been provided on what other retailers might give to pre-order customers, but if past Assassin's Creed "retailer exclusive" bonuses are any indication, the Harlequin will be available for all to play eventually (presumably for a few virtual bucks). We've dropped an additional image of the terrifying multiplayer character in our gallery below, should you be so inclined. Oh, and you can pre-order the game right here. %Gallery-92693%[Via IGN]

  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood announced and detailed by Ubisoft

Click to Colosseum-size This morning, Ubisoft officially announced Ezio's return to the Assassin's Creed franchise, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Though the game was outed and cursorily detailed in some placeholder box art last week, the official press release shared some specifics: the single-player campaign ("set in the living, breathing, unpredictable city of Rome") is expected to last 15 hours, and sees Ezio recruiting and training "promising young Assassins" for deployment across the historical capital. Rather than using money earned to bolster a villa, you'll fix up Rome itself, which will change Ezio's social standing, unlock missions and curry favor with various factions. The release promises collaboration with Da Vinci, Machiavelli, and Caterina Sforza, and describes new "secret weapons." Ubi is throwing in poison darts, parachutes, hidden blades and guns, not to mention an "advanced flying machine" -- which is presumably useful in more than a single mission this time. Multiplayer -- developed by Ubisoft Annecy, who created the online component of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory -- is said to feature "multiple authentic character classes" (presumably the characters seen in the gallery below) each of whom will use "signature weapons and killing moves." We'll look for more details and a more specific release date than "Holiday 2010" at E3, perhaps on a giant advertisement emblazoned on the side of the convention center. %Gallery-92693%

  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood teased via Abstergo Industries e-mail

As promised, Ubisoft has started its marketing efforts for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. An e-mail from the game's Abstergo Industries barely attempts to extend the fiction into reality, linking to a Flash-filled Ubisoft promotional website. Presumably, the teaser site provides insight into some of the weapons that may be used in the sequel's new multiplayer component, including an axe, fan, syringe, dagger and claw. (Solve the puzzle on the website to unveil yet another weapon: the switch blade.) Some concept art (placed after the break) is buried in the site, possibly offering a clue as to how the story of Brotherhood will unfold. We're pretty certain these are rows of Animus machines waiting to be activated, but perhaps you can provide your own conspiracy theories.

  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood confirmed by Ubisoft

[Destructoid] Kotaku has been sent an image of the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's placeholder box art, presumably by a rogue GameStop employee. Ubisoft confirmed the image as legit, officially revealing the next title in the Assassin's Creed series starring Ezio Auditore de Firenze, and in turn confirming the veracity of a handful of details contained on the back of the temporary box art. The blurb reads, "Live and breathe as Ezio, now a legendary master assassin, in his struggle against the Templar order. Lead your own brotherhood of Assassins and strike at the heart of the enemy: Rome. And for the first time, take part in an innovative multiplayer layer allowing you to embody an assassin of your choosing and define their killing style." As you've likely guessed by now, this is the spinoff that Ubisoft revealed to be in production a few months back -- the same spinoff spotted in a domain name registration just two weeks ago (which lends more credibility to the possibility that the next Driver game will be based in San Francisco, we suppose). The tiny screenshots seen on the back of the placeholder art additionally boast "A never-before-seen online multiplayer experience" and the ability to "Lead your own brotherhood of assassins, as Ezio, and conquer Rome." As you can see on the right side, a pre-order sticker advertises the pre-order bonus of an "exclusive multiplayer character." Kotaku thinks it could be Altair, but we're gonna be rebels and hope for Renaissance-era Sam Fisher. That's synergy, baby! Update: A Ubisoft rep told Joystiq, "Ubisoft confirms the authenticity of this image and will provide more information next week."

  • Assassin's Creed viral message appears on Facebook

Those sneaky Templars, always threatening the world through Ubisoft-owned Facebook pages! Oh, is that a new development? Assassin's Creed series villain Dr. Vidic (we don't blame you if you don't remember who he is -- he's this guy) recently posted a sinister statement on Ubi's Assassin's Creed 2 Facebook page. "It is the time of our rising. A new age enters and a great battle looms. Templar destiny is at hand and waiting for you." Hey, at least he's not yelling at Lucy, right? After Ubisoft's reveal of a forthcoming AC "episode" with multiplayer functionality coming by April 2011, we're happy to break out our jump to conclusions mat for some good ol' fashioned speculation, but we can't be sure if "Vidic's" words hint at an upcoming reveal of said game ("a great battle looms") or not. A domain registration by Ubi for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood from earlier this year doesn't hurt our case either, but again, without the publisher's confirmation we're not sure exactly what the message means. But we are pretty sure that we're in for some not-so-exciting social media marketing. [Via Eurogamer]

  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Driver: San Francisco domains registered by Ubisoft

Thanks to a good catch by Superannuation, we may now know the title of Ubisoft's proposed follow-up to Assassin's Creed 2: "Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood." That's the name of a currently inactive domain registered by Ubisoft earlier this year. Additionally, the publisher has scooped up "driversanfranciscogame.com," which could be the name and location of the announced Driver reboot. "Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" would certainly be a suitable name for what's expected to be the first game in the series with "an online multiplayer mode" (not counting the iPhone game, of course). As for "Driver: San Francisco," what better place to jump start the drained franchise? Some of the world's greatest feats of driving have taken place in San Fran, after all. Ever seen the movie Bullit? Have you played San Francisco Rush? Don't tell us you missed San Francisco Rush 2049!
