Direct2Drive has the PC version of Dragon Age: Origins for $20 today err, yesterday. Update: Due to an East Coast vs. West Coast timey-wimey thing involving flipping of internet switches, the deal had left the building before this story made it to our front page. We apologize for the miscommunication. Today's deal is Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which ... does have some RPG elements in it! And rocket-propelled grenades.

A 500MB PC patch for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is ready to deploy tomorrow, June 30, at 1AM EST. Developer DICE states "all game servers" are going down for the four-hour maintenance update (we're trying to clarify if that includes PS3 and Xbox 360 servers). We've listed the full changelog after the break. Update: A super long-distance call on our mobile from DICE HQ informs us this shutdown only affects PC servers.

As part of his introductory post on the official Battlefield blog, the franchise's new community manager, "Bazajaytee," announced that the delayed Onslaught mode DLC for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will arrive in the Xbox Live Marketplace tomorrow, June 24, for 800 Microsoft points ($10). We're glad the delay wasn't, say, a week. Then we'd have probably shot someone -- in the game, of course.

Squad up for the Onslaught today -- if you're playing on a PS3. Battlefield: Bad Company 2's cooperative Onslaught mode has been "delayed" for Xbox Live, an EA representative has confirmed to Joystiq. The DLC will be available for $10 on PSN as soon as the weekly update occurs later today. We'll make sure to update if we receive any intel on a new date for the Xbox version -- or any date for the PC version, for that matter. President Hamilton would like you to check out our hands-on before exchanging him for this new mode. We've also placed a new trailer for Onslaught after the break. %Gallery-93433% [Thanks, Jack H.]

It'll be available that Tuesday for $10 on PSN and 800 on Xbox Live -- European PS3 owners will have to wait an extra day, until June 23. Has your propensity for keeping things old school prevented you from getting ahead in the ultra-competitive world of Battlefield: Bad Company 2? Specifically, have you been held back by the M1 Garand rifle's lack of stat-tracking? You won't have to change your ways in order to get the recognition you deserve -- a patch went live for the PS3 version of the game last night (the 360 version is coming soon!) which corrects this oversight, as well as a few other minor multiplayer bugs. In addition, you'll now get more points for securing team objectives, and will lose more points for killing your fellow team members. We love seeing such strong reinforcements of karmic ideals in our multiplayer shooters. Click past the jump to see the full list of changes included in the update. [Thanks, Fernando]

  • Hands-on: Battlefield: Bad Company 2's co-op Onslaught mode

Click for a screenshot onslaught. Being the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 fan that you are, you've no doubt read about the game's upcoming Onslaught mode DLC. If, for some reason, you haven't -- and didn't click on that link there -- here's the skinny: it will add up to four-player co-op to EA's latest military shooter, pitting human-folk against opposing A.I. foes in a rush to complete four different maps as quickly as possible. You'll want to do that because the mode will sport worldwide leaderboards for each of its four difficulty settings. I played the mode a couple of weeks back at EA HQ. Even on the lowest difficulty setting my three fellow players and I were absolutely humiliated within seconds of starting our first level. The A.I. is unforgiving. Our initial embarrassment had what I believe is the effect DICE is after with this mode: really making squads work together. You won't make it 50 feet if you don't -- and if you all die it's game over. %Gallery-93433%

  • New game sales up in GameStop's fiscal Q1

    05.20.2010

GameStop reported earnings for its fiscal first quarter (February–April). Sales are up five percent over the first quarter of 2009, to $2.08 billion. Some of that growth is no doubt due to strong sales of new games. The retailer announced that new software sales increased 13.3 percent in the quarter -- a trend that the GameStop should be happy to see, now that EA and THQ are taking aim at the used games business. The company identified five games in particular that drove revenue growth: Battlefield Bad Company 2, God of War 3, Final Fantasy XIII, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, and BioShock 2. We all love buying sequels at GameStop, apparently.

  • EA showing off 'marquee' title in 3D at this year's E3

[Image Credit: Frank Reese] Amidst the flurry of information in yesterday's investor call, EA COO John Schappert loosed a handful of interesting tidbits about his company's presence at this year's E3. Did you know that the publisher's sports arm will be showing off new titles across the board, as well as unveiling unannounced games "that make use of the new motion controllers from Sony and Microsoft" Neither did we! Okay, alright, we probably could've guessed that much. But we certainly didn't expect Mr. Schappert to say, "We will also show a marquee title in breathtaking 3D." Following up with him via email this afternoon, he told Joystiq, "We purposely didn't give more detail so we could keep the excitement up for E3 -- so you'll have to wait until then to find out!" We pressed on whether he meant Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (spotted running in 3D earlier this year at PAX East) or if he meant a new title, but were told that we'll just have to wait and see. What we can say with unflinching certainty, however, is that the company will be showing off the recently announced Hasbro Family Game Night 3 at its presser. Sorry, we're suckers for Clue. Did that not do it for you? [Via Videogamer]

  • DICE explains current lack of Onslaught in PC version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2

    05.12.2010

While the announcement of new DLC and a new mode for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was good news to many, it was perplexing to PC owners. See, the new Onslaught mode has only been announced for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Speaking on the Bad Company 2 forums, DICE associate producer Barrie Tingle explains why Onslaught is seemingly skipping the PC. "The problem we have on PC," says Tingle, "is that all our servers are dedicated with providers." As a result, Tingle says that changing a 32-player Conquest server into a 4-player Onslaught server adds up to a net loss of 28 player slots. He adds that DICE isn't "ruling out" the possibility of PC Onslaught, but the company is "researching how to bring it to PC without affecting players who don't have Onslaught or their own server to run it on." When reached for comment by Joystiq on the subject, an EA representative responded, simply, "We'll have more details about PC DLC at a later date." If only there were an awesome military shooter we could play while we wait .... [Via VG247]

  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 gains co-op 'Onslaught' mode soon

For those of you who like to play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in good company (FIRED - Ed.), EA just announced a new co-op mode for four players. Onslaught Mode, available "soon" on PS3 and Xbox 360, remixes the Valparaiso, Atacama Desert, Isla Inocentes, and Nelson Bay maps for use in co-op with new vehicle placements and different times of day. Players are asked to complete specific objectives in each map, with enemy AI attempting to prevent those goals. For example, the announcement specifies that "Vehicle warfare comes to the forefront in Atacama Desert while Nelson Bay focuses squarely on infantry assault." We're following up with EA about the price of this DLC, as well as the prospect of its release on PC.

  • Battlefield: BC, Mass Effect, Army of Two sequel sales all top 1 million; Dante's Inferno comes close in Q1 2010

Electronic Arts' high-profile sequels helped the publisher fight its way to some positive cash flow in the final quarter of an otherwise traumatic fiscal year. Overall, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 led the charge with over three million units sold in the quarter across Europe and North America, with five million units sold to date. Mass Effect 2 didn't do too shabby, selling 1.6 million units during the quarter in North America and Europe, while Army of Two: The 40th Day sold "over one million units worldwide in the quarter." It wasn't all sequel talk for the core titles,as Dante's Inferno got a mention too, having sold "almost one million units in the quarter" across Europe and North America. Oh, Dante, don't cry! It ain't easy for a new franchise in this world -- just ask EA's new IPs from last fiscal year.

Recons! Medics! Assaults! Lend us your Engineers! If you're still adhering to your nightly routine of playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2 until your eyes refuse to stay open any longer, you'll be pleased to hear about some upcoming changes coming to console versions of the game. Unless, of course, you actually like the game's unkillable, super overpowered deathcopters. In that case, you're about to be sorely disappointed. Changes coming in the update -- due out May 11 via Xbox Live and PSN -- include a few balance tweaks of most weapons, a slight nerfing of the attack helicopter and an increase in the velocity of tracer darts, making it easier to stick 'em to that aforementioned helicopter. Joy! Check out the full list of changes after the jump.

Has the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 disc ever gone for a spin inside your console? Well, you may have unlocked a spiffy new gun for Medal of Honor -- the game isn't out yet and you're already unlocking content for it? Man, you're awesome! The Battlefield blog breaks the news, detailing early access to the M24 Sniper rifle in multiplayer. Of course, there are a few caveats: You need an EA account and you must have registered a Battlefield: Bad Company 2 VIP code. If you haven't done either of those things, you have until March 31, 2011 to get it done -- PC players need to only have participated in an online match to be eligible for the unlock. If you purchased a VIP code through the Bad Company 2 store, sorry, you're not eligible. The other requirement is that you have to pick up a copy of Medal of Honor when it releases later this year. Yes, we're serious -- if you want the gun in the game, you're going to have to buy the game to get the gun. We know, it's totally not fair!

Microsoft's Major Nelson has released his weekly report of Xbox Live activity today, featuring Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 and Sega's After Burner Climax in the top spot. With one last activity update to be released before the Halo: Reach beta, we anticipate an upcoming fight in Xbox Live list's top three. Bungie's 2010 release Halo 3 secured second place for the sixteenth week in a row with EA's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 closing out this week's three-hole. On the Xbox Live Arcade list, the collective biomass of classic arcade titles solidified Game Room in second place for a second week in a row while Capcom's Final Fight: Double Impact closing out the top three. Other notable highlights include Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Conviction jumping from ninth spot to sixth and EA Sports' FIFA 10 overtaking Call of Duty: World at War for fourth spot. Look, we have a fairly refined and nuanced stance on how Battlefield: Bad Company 2 should be played: in Rush Mode. ... Yep, that's it. But, we recognize that some people just like to do things incorrectly and, lucky for them, so does developer DICE. Cue: VIP Map Pack 3. The latest free download for all VIP members adds maps to Squad Rush and Squad Deathmatch -- specifically, Laguna Alta will become available in Squad Rush mode and Nelson Bay will become available in Squad Deathmatch. Planet Battlefield was kind enough to point out the DLC that, as you can see above, is visible in the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 store. We'll let you know when you can download it. Update: Added clarification of source and removed the "sometime in April" quote, which never originated from DICE. Joystiq apologizes for the confusion and regrets the error. [Via BadCompanyTwo]
