  • New Bionic Commando trailer really swings

We've been so busy playing Bionic Commando Rearmed that we'd nearly forgotten a full-fledged 3D remake heading our way. Fortunately, the marketing folks at Capcom made sure to include a trailer for the new Bionic Commando inside of the Rearmed database. GameTrailers has taken the liberty of posting that trailer and we have to say it looks pretty hot. It details the evolution of the series, from the NES version to Rearmed to the upcoming retail Bionic Commando. The trailer showcases some of the new moves available in Bionic Commando and all of them look pretty slick, particularly the 360 degree bionic arm whip near the end. Also, if you keep your eyes peeled, you'll see the unlockable Radd Spencer character skin, which actually looks pretty good.

Hardcore gamers rejoice for Bionic Commando Rearmed is finally here! What's more, it's good. Definitely not for the faint of heart though, so take heed. We also get Fable II Pub Games, which are ... pub games. While they may look simple on the outside, make no mistake because they are very addictive. The only problem: no online multiplayer. That actually applies to Bionic Commando as well, though it does have offline co-op and versus multiplayer. Overall, we've got two solid games this week, and one of them is free if you pre-order Fable II. • Bionic Commando will have PSN exclusive challenge room

\ Ben Judd, a producer of Bionic Commando: Rearmed, has revealed to PlayStation.Blog the nature of the "VERY cool surprise" Capcom mentioned early last month for the PSN version of the game. It seems to be "an exclusive challenge room" that will "make for bragging rights" due to the difficult nature of the stage. The post also unveils another medal, called Faster than a Speeding Bullet. To achieve this medal, the player must block 100 projectiles using the Bionic Arm. Like the last medal revealed, these medals seem to correspond to this list of Achievements. Most likely, when the game is patched with Trophies, that list won't look too different. Finally, Capcom mentions that Street Fighter Alpha will also be available today on the PSN. For those of you who felt that this wasn't the Street Fighter surprise you were hoping for, there might be something else planned for us. "Some of you may be asking, 'Come on John D, was that's it?' Um, if I say more, the PR team will kick my a$$, so I'll leave it as a definitely, maybe." What could this mean? Oh, Capcom! You are such a tease!

  • Capcom 'contemplating' doing more Wii ports

Christian Svensson, VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development at Capcom, is a man of the people. When someone sends out a distress call, he quickly hops down from atop his mountain of unsold copies of Zack & Wiki and Okami to help out. He may not be wearing a cape and mask, but we think he's a super hero. Why all the Sven love? Because the dude gave us hope for some more Capcom support on the Wii. When Capcom fan John voiced his concern over a lack of Bionic Commando on the Wii, Christian stepped in to let John know that Capcom won't be forgetting about the console after Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop. "We are contemplating versions of one or two of the CEI titles you've mentioned on the Wii (not saying which), but we'd like to see how they do on their initial target systems before doubling down on additional SKUs." What titles could he be referring to? Siliconera speculates that it could be Flock, Age of Booty, Dark Void, and Street Fighter IV up for consideration, as these are Capcom Entertainment Incorporated ("CEI") projects. Flock seems like the natural choice, but we'd be lying if we said that the prospect of Dark Void or Street Fighter IV on the Wii was unappealing. That Dark Void game certainly looked cool at E3. We'd have liked to play it, but we were too busy playing games for you all. [Via Joystiq]

Much like Cher, Bionic Commando Rearmed has taken something old and freshened it up with the help of modern technology -- but much of the same ol' game is still there, caked under the cosmetic changes. The reviews are swinging in about the XBLA nip/tuck version of the classic '80s platformer and it appears -- for those who can put up with the unrelenting difficulty -- all systems are go: The remake is competent and won't give us the desire to turn back time* and play the original again. (A warning for many of you: Despite being on Xbox LIVE, Bionic Commando Rearmed's cooperative and multiplayer modes are both offline-only leading some of us here at Joystiq to dub it Moronic Commando or Bionic Command'oh -- take your pick. Seriously, Capcom. That's a deal breaker for a lot of us right there.) IGN (94/100): "The best elements of the original are back, but have been upgraded to be better than before. The new bosses add a more interesting challenge and the final level is one for the ages. And, of course, the visuals are brilliant. The remastered soundtrack is fantastic as well. From top to bottom, Bionic Commando Rearmed is an incredible game that's well worth owning." OXM UK (80/100): "[BCR] is unapologetically old-skool, from the inability to jump right through to the spiked pits that bounce you back a few feet minus a huge chunk of your health. Bosses have attack patterns, health pick-ups have to be earned and each level has been designed around blind leaps of faith and tiny margins of error." EuroGamer (80/100): "Between the multiplayer modes and the Challenge Rooms, there's more than enough innovation to make up for the minor irritations of the retro controls. Far from perfect, Bionic Commando Rearmed is still a much more complete and robust package than either 1942 Joint Strike or Commando 3 and another impressive addition to Capcom's download library." OXM (70/100): "Rearmed quickly wears out its welcome and devolves into a series of frustrations. Precision platforming is required for almost everything, and failure often leads to death. The latter half of the game is especially unforgiving, although ironically, the end-level bosses aren't nearly as bad as the path you took to get to them. We recommend bringing a friend along in the excellent new co-op mode."

  • Capcom's Judd on VC Bionic Commando: Nintendo 'told us no'

In this interview with 1UP, Capcom's Ben Judd tells the fascinating story of his start as the first Western-born producer at Capcom Japan and the origins of the new Bionic Commando games. But we don't care about that. (Professionally, anyway. It's a great story and we love Bionic Commando). Bionic Commando on the Virtual Console came up again, and Judd reiterated his earlier statement that the game just isn't happening on VC, but not because Capcom isn't interested. "We couldn't get it approved for the Virtual Console," he told 1UP. "I can't say why." He said last time that it wasn't the exploding heads, and he didn't answer the question in this interview about a possible problem with the Nazi content (such as the head that explodes).

  • Bionic Commando: Rearmed to get Trophies, Dead Rising hinted

Add one more to the growing list of Trophy-supported games. Capcom's Bionic Commando: Rearmed is coming out this week on the PSN, and while it won't support Trophies at launch, they will be patched in later at some point. For an idea of what the Trophies may look like, visit Xbox360Achievements.org to see the full list of Achievements. Looks like these Trophies may not be too difficult to get ... except for the one where you have to beat the game on Super Hard. Ouch! But that's not all -- Capcom's John Diamonon has been responding to every comment on the PS.blog and had this fun quip at a reader -- "You haven't seen the last of Dead Rising." ZOMG? Perhaps. But, as Diamonon wisely noted: "In general, it's always good to keep expectations low, lol, just so you don't get too dissapointed." Truer advice has never been spoken on the internet.[Thanks, Gambit07!]

Capcom has officially announced its release dates and pricing for Bionic Commando Rearmed and, except for two tiny issues, everything looks pretty good for next week's launch. Turns out the PC version, available August 14, will cost $15, which is $5 more than on Xbox 360 and PS3, for no apparent reason [update: apparently, "$14.99 represents an appropriate price for the platform," Capcom says -- full statement on Shacknews]. The other thing is that the European PSN has no release date scheduled at this time.PS3 owners in Japan, along with Xbox 360 owners worldwide, will be able to purchase BCR for $10 on August 13, US PS3 owners need to wait until the PSN updates the following day. We'll let you know when a European PSN release date is given.[Via Big Download, PS3 Fanboy]

Bionic Commando Rearmed, the upcoming remake of the classic 2D sidescrolling game, will be available next week ... so long as you're not playing on a PS3 in Europe. In spite of worldwide launches on both Xbox 360 and PC, the European PS3 version of Bionic Commando has mysteriously lost its release date. Perhaps SCEE dropped it somewhere? For the rest of you, expect the game in next Thursday's PSN update: $9.99 in the US, 1200yen in Japan.

  • Rumor: Konami trying its hands at retro revival

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Rumor_Konami_takes_cue_from_Capcom_doing_own_retro_revival'; This is a pretty juicy rumor. Apparently (as evidenced by the image to the right), Konami digs what Capcom's doing with reviving the retro. You know, Mega Man 9 and Bionic Commando: REarmed? Konami is all about it.So, the rumor goes (from the rumor section of the September 2008 issue of EGM) that they're thinking about doing a little bit of reviving to one of their older 2D franchises. Talk around Wii Fanboy HQ has us leaning toward three different franchises that could get the treatment: Rocket Knight Adventures, Zombies Ate my Neighbors and Legend of the Mystical Ninja (Ganbare Goemon). Of these three, we're pretty much leaning toward Rocket Knight Adventures, although some of us would like to see Ganbare Goemon get some love. What's your guess?

    07.29.2008

***Spoiler Alert -- Final Warning*** The original Bionic Commando ended with a battle against The Albatross warship and then Master-D. IGN tells us that Rearmed's ending is going to be a little different. The Albatross is now its own level, and apparently the longest level in the game, with challenging rooms that will require shutting down a security system to battle Master-D. Don't worry BC fans, we've been told before the original ending is still "historically accurate." Bionic Commando Rearmed will be available on August 13 -- be sure to check out videos of the new Albatross level after the break. %Gallery-14181%

After several months of delayed deployment, it looks like Bionic Commando Rearmed is finally getting a solid release date. That fateful day for the classic remake would be Thursday, August 14. It'll be available for download on the PS Store for 10 bucks. That price is practically a steal if the game comes with the awesome theme song playing in the trailer above. Also, just for your convenience, don't get this game mixed up with Bionic Commando; they're two different games. And yes, both look fantastic. %Gallery-14343%

Click for high-resolution image. Disclaimer: This preview is based on the Xbox 360 version of the game. Developers have told us the PS3 version will be identical to the Xbox 360 version. Within moments of picking up the controller, this thought will ring immediately in your mind: this isn't Spider-man. Capcom's upcoming Bionic Commando may have you swinging from place to place, but the effect is completely different from Activision's Spider-man games. Unlike those movie franchise titles, this title demands real skill out of players -- so much so, in fact, that it was difficult for us to come to grip with the game's unique controls (sorry for the pun). Don't expect to simply hold a trigger and jump around from place to place. You must actually aim where your bionic arm will extend to. You'll have an extra reticule on-screen which shows what you can and cannot attach to. What surprised us the most was how short the bionic arm actually is: don't expect to jump over large canyons in a single swing. %Gallery-9695%

When (and we're talking hypotheticals) you're in a Capcom meeting room and there just happens to be a gigantic replica Bionic Commando arm lying about (with working claw), what else is there to do but put it on and crush Yoon's head? Jem Alexander had to face that tough choice in real life, and he kept a cool enough head to make the smart move. Apparently, Bionic Commando producer (and voice of Phoenix Wright!) Ben Judd constructed this arm in his spare time ... when not working on Bionic Commando. It's amazing work (even if it doesn't shoot a grappling hook). %Gallery-24249%
