  • Sorry, no trophies for 1942 or Bionic Commando [Update]

The upcoming 1942 and Bionic Commando PSN games are not going to support trophies, according to a statement by Capcom PR Manager Tim Ng. Many speculated after a recent PlayStation.Blog post that the upcoming downloadable Bionic Commando title would support PS3's Achievement-esque Trophy system. Considering how popular they are for Super Stardust HD, we really hoped Capcom would've been able to add these shiny accomplishments into their games. Perhaps they'll reconsider for future titles down the line.Update: Trophies may be patched into Bionic Commando: Rearmed at some point. However, this isn't guaranteed. According to John Diamonon from Capcom: "Medals are the equivalent to achievements. Basically doing the same things in either version will open up these medals. We are currently reviewing how much work it would take to retro tag save/clear data for trophy support. Certainly though, if it does not require a huge amount of programming time (I.e. money) then we will probably move forward with it." [Source][Photo Source]

Capcom has outline some of the "PSN specific" content in the upcoming remake Bionic Commando: Rearmed in a PlayStation.Blog post. There is DualShock 3 support, along with another confirmation of Remote Play support, and one "VERY cool surprise" which will be revealed later. An interesting feature disclosed is called Medals. There will be 12 to collect, with different types to suit different play styles, "from brawlers to thinkers." For example, a Pacifist Pride medal will be awarded when the player clears any area without firing your gun. Finally, the post highlights the character Haley, pictured above, and a weapon, the 13-gauge "Hagle Breaker" Assault Shotgun. You can even post questions in the comments section of the PlayStation.Blog post, and Capcom may give an answer in their next update. We think it is safe to say the biggest question on everyone's mind is, do Medals = trophies?

  • It's true, Bionic Commando's swinging controls are 'going to be tough' to use

If you believe Capcom's upcoming Bionic Commando (in 3D!) is going to be a one of those pick up and play, easy to master kind of games, we ask, what on Earth gave you that impression? Seriously, flinging your body around the jungle Spider-man style is no easy task and even Capcom admits that it's "going to be tough".Talking with GameVideos.com, Bionic Commando producer Ben Judd agrees that "the second you use the swing mechanic it is both very innovative and cool because of that, but it's also going to be something that requires a little more time to adapt to." Though the learning curve will not go unrewarded as Judd goes on to say "I still believe that once you master it, you're going to feel like the ultimate badass and you're going to really like that part of it. But it's just going to take more patience ..."Don't worry Mr. Judd, we'll give the game the time it needs to get the hang of the controls before we praise or disgrace its gaming existence. All because we care. Watch the full interview above to learn more about Bionic Commando's controls, locations and what goodies are unlocked when gamers own both it and its XBLA cousin Bionic Commando Rearmed.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Hands_on_with_Bionic_Commando'; Joystiq managed to get some serious play time with Capcom's upcoming remake of Bionic Commando (cleverly titled Bionic Commando). We're sure there are important details we should be discussing, but let's get one thing straight. The swinging is fun. According to Joystiq, it's damned fun. There really isn't much more you need to know about the game, but we still suggest you read Joystiq's full impressions of the game. You run along. We're going to sit here and bask in the relief for a while.

We didn't learn much about Bionic Commando's multiplayer modes at last week's Captivate 08 event, aside from the fact that you can expect deathmatches, capture the flag and some other modes that more specifically take advantage of the game's verticality. Also, there's extensive stat tracking through something called "The Swingers' Club."In fact, pretty much everything we know can be encapsulated in this trailer, which actually makes swing-filled deathmatches look kind of fun, even though it sounds like a total clusteryuck. What say you?

This new Bionic Commando trailer, shown at Capcom's Captivate 08 event, shows some of the game's multiplayer gameplay, It also reminds us of a mixture of Halo (what with the brightly colored armor) and Grand Theft Auto IV. An intriguingly bizarre combination, we're sure you agree. Joystiq got some hands on time with the title at the event and seem quite hyped. Once you're done watching this video, be sure to check out their impressions to see exactly what they thought.

click to enlarge var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Hands_on_with_Bionic_Commando'; Tell you what: Let's just pretend you all know that this is an updated version of the classic Bionic Commando, the latest salvo in Capcom's continuing effort to reach out to the North American audience. Let's just skip all of that and skip to what you want to hear: Let's talk about swinging. It's the first thing we were introduced to in our time with the game, so it feels right to get it out of the way first. So how is it? Fun. Really, really fun. There's a great sense of speed and it makes wandering through the desolate and dynamic Ascension City a real joy.But that glowing praise comes with a caveat: It's also not easy. In fact, we didn't feel like we really "got it" until about 20 minutes in. Some of the difficulty is derived from the amount of control you have. You have to know what you're swinging from, unlike in the Spider-Man series (the closest swinging competitor) where your webs will automatically find the nearest surface. No, you have to aim your arm. But once you get it, it's really satisfying.%Gallery-24249%

  • Bionic Commando and the soundtrack you won't hear on the Wii

One of the many reasons we love Bionic Commando and want to see it on the Virtual Console so badly is for its awesome, 8-bit soundtrack. So, when Capcom released Simon Viklund's album for Bionic Commando Rearmed, which reworks the NES songs into a more modern-day sound, we had to have it.We know that Rearmed isn't coming to the Wii, despite Wii gamers' pleas and petitions. Still, there's no denying the NES roots in Viklund's music, and just because we're not getting the actual game doesn't mean we should deprive ourselves of some great tunes, does it?In fact, the folks at Capcom are releasing the soundtrack even though they think they'll lose money on it, simply because they love and believe in the music that much. After listening to it, we have to say that we can see why. If you're interested, you can get the full soundtrack on iTunes or at Sumthing Digital for $9.99 (or buy the tracks you like separately for $0.99).[Via Capcom's Blog]

So apparently Bionic Commando Rearmed won't be making it in time for its previously announced May release. As patched in to us via the official website's Communicator, the team working on the game has "run into a few problems in the closing stages." Despite this, the game is done. There are just a few things that need to be corrected before it's good to go. When exactly will the game be ready for deployment? We don't know, but we're assuming it won't be too long.[Via Joystiq]

We hope you're sitting own. The anticipated XBLA title, Bionic Commando Rearmed, has been delayed from its original May release. According to a classified communique found on the Bionic Commando blog, the game is complete but still requires some bug fixing, certification process before it's ready for release. No word on a new release for the title, which still plans to hit the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 simultaneously. • Wherefore art thou, Mega Man?

When Capcom said that we wouldn't be seeing Bionic Commando on the Wii, that wasn't entirely true. What is true is that the decision is completely up to Nintendo -- but that goes for all Capcom games, not just the retrospectively controversial Hitler-killing ones.According to Capcom's Public Relations Director Chris Kramer, the company licensed the rights to their games to Nintendo. It's therefore completely up to Nintendo whether and when Capcom titles get released on the Virtual Console -- Capcom no longer has any input in the decision. That's all fine and good, but at the same time, it makes us a little uneasy. One question we have -- where is the Mega Man series on North American consoles? Why is it taking so long for Nintendo of America to release even one game of the beloved series? Nintendo obviously has plenty of games on their plate that they'd like to release in a timely fashion, but when that stops us from playing some of our favorite Capcom classics, we can't say we're too happy about it.What about you? Are there any Capcom games that you wish Nintendo would just hurry up with?

Last week didn't see any kind of XBLA release due to the massive popularity of GTA IV, but now that that particular sales storm has passed, what is the next release for the Live Arcade? Common sense might say that it'd be Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm, given that it was pushed back into May. And that still might be possible as XBLA games can release in pairs. However the Australian site PALGN has Bionic Commando Rearmed set for a 05/07/2008 release, so if they're right we might be seeing that one sooner than we thought we would have. We certainly haven't heard anything else about this week's XBLA release ....

    04.28.2008

When we heard about the original Bionic Commando coming to Xbox Live and PSN, we couldn't help but hope that an announcement for the game on the VC would be soon to follow. Fast forward to four months later, and Capcom's Ben Judd recently stated in an interview with IGN that putting the NES version on the VC "couldn't happen." According to Christian Svensson, the Senior Director of Strategic Planning & Research for Capcom, this isn't the company's fault. Rather, Nintendo is the one to blame, as Capcom would like nothing more than to have the game on the Virtual Console. We've already done our own speculating as to why this game would be roadblocked by Nintendo, but to hear it confirmed is rather heartbreaking.[Via Siliconera]

Everything old is new again, right? Especially when it has new things. Capcom's upcoming PSN remake of the original Bionic Commando looks absolutely incredible, and not juts from a visual perspective. The addition of multiplayer makes this $10 M-rated downloadable title a bargain. With support up to four players in three different modes, we think this will be a blast for all you old-school gamers out there (that includes us!). For more videos, visit Joystiq. %Gallery-14343%

Bionic Commando Rearmed's website unleashed a pre-emptive strike, announcing the game received a Mature rating from the ESRB. The ESRB has not yet listed the game on its own site. Having had some hands-on time with the game ourselves, the only reason we could come up with the title receiving the M-rating was due to the final scene. *SPOILER ALERT* The site states in one of its "communications" that the M-rating means players will see the "historically accurate" scene where Hitler's Master D's head pops like a can of Pringles -- but now in glorious HD. The communication jokes it'll be the "best five seconds of [its] entire life." %Gallery-14181%

  • Bionic Commando Rearmed rated M, guess why

    04.15.2008

The official Bionic Commando website has revealed that Bionic Commando Rearmed -- that's the XBLA version -- has received an M rating from the ESRB. The rating was announced via a nifty communicator dialogue reminiscent of the original game (you can see a capture of it above). So, why would a game with no blood and extremely tame violence get an M rating? If you've ever played the original and completed it, we'll give you three guesses. Yes, the reason is that Bionic Commando Rearmed features a recreation of the climactic scene from the original game. You know the one. If by chance you don't know the one, you can find a video after the break (it occurs at 0:10). Be warned, it's spoilerific. And sploderific.
