  • Splinter Cell, BioShock, GTA IV episodes exclusive for Xbox 360

Both BioShock and Splinter Cell Conviction (the suspected title for the post-Double Agent iteration) will be console-exclusive to the Xbox 360; BioShock will still be coming to the PC, while Splinter Cell can still be released for the PC and various portable console (DS, PSP). BioShock publisher Take-Two will also be providing "exclusive access to two downloadable, epic episodes of Grand Theft Auto IV via Xbox Live, each with hours of entirely new gameplay ." Ubisoft's Splinter Cell Conviction is the title found during their "accidental" leak earlier this month. The exclusivity of BioShock was predicted by GameSpot back in January after developer Irrational was bought by Take Two. The GTA IV episodes are a "complete exclusive," according to Scott Henson, Director of the Game Development Group at Microsoft, and will not showing up on the PlayStation 3 download service. The episodes will be available a few months after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV on October 17 and 19 in US and Europe, respectively. Microsoft hinted at exclusive GTA IV content as early as July. While BioShock may not affect the mass audience, the loss of Splinter Cell and some exclusive GTA IV content could hurt the PlayStation 3's image in North America and Europe. Then again, Sony does have Metal Gear Solid 4 to satiate its consumers, but what are the long-term ramifications of Microsoft's exclusive deals?

IGN scored 15 minutes of "exclusive" BioShock gameplay video with commentary by Creative Director Ken Levine. See creepy little girls harvest genetic material the hard way under the watchful eye of monsters wearing diving helmets. Hey, this is what the next generation is all about! Levine says Irrational Studios aims to avoid every FPS cliche with this long-awaited would-be masterpiece. According to him, that means no long hallways or waves of retarded enemies. What else do you hope doesn't show up in BioShock?

In an article from PC Gamer, Irrational boss Ken Levine had some pretty choice words for über publisher Electronic Arts and their relationship with the groundbreaking System Shock franchise. In reference to System Shock 3, Levine said: "One of the reasons I wasn't interested [in System Shock 3] is EA just didn't give a sh-t about that game. I think if EA were to do it, it would've been just a regular first-person shooter with a boss monster at the end. They [EA] didn't see it as big brand and I didn't want that uphill battle."Currently developing the heavily-anticipated BioShock, Levine says new publisher 2K Games is more of the nurturing type: "We have a publisher who cares about this game, and they believe in this kind of game. 2K Games is the company that helped reinvigorate Elder Scrolls [with The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion] and Civilization. They believe in core games."So, is this just bitterness talking or was EA more concerned with gettin' that paper and not unique games? Well, with games like Army of Two and Spore on the horizon, maybe bitterness is the answer.

GameSpy has some new screens from Irrational Games' BioShock, the sci-fi shooter-RPG filled with big daddies, little sisters, and splicers in the failed utopian undersea kingdom of Rapture. You can also check out GameSpot's demo impressions to learn more about the spooky inhabitants you'll encounter in this Unreal-powered adventure. They gave BioShock a Game of the Show award at E3 earlier this month.
