Creators of social robot Buddy need more money to finally launch
In 2015, Buddy the social robot first appeared on Indiegogo. Nearly four years and $657,000 later, the friendly robotic companion has yet to ship to any of its backers. Now the creators of Buddy, Blue Frog Robotics, are reaching out to backers to apologize for the extended delay and ask for more money to finally bring Buddy to fruition, with the ultimate goal of shipping by April 2020.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Instagram made it easy to invite a friend to view your live broadcasts on the photo sharing network. Unfortunately, the invitation was only one way. Instagram has fixed that, however, with a new option: you can now request to join your friend's live video.

If you've spent any time on Kickstarter, you've already seen those questionable rolling trashcan bots mixed among promising pieces of tech. You might even start thinking truly useful home-based robots have arrived. And, hey, it's about time! The first domestic robots started cropping up in the '80s. But, while the Hero-1 might have inspired a generation of roboticists, public perception of robots in the home hasn't changed much since the Reagan era. Now a whole slew of bots, like Jibo, Pepper and Kuri are trying to worm their way into our hearts. Nearly all have the ability to broadcast what their on-board camera sees to a companion app. Some can even be programmed to map rooms, execute commands when they 'see' certain actions or people, and even complete sentry patrols. We say it looks like a rolling trashcan with a disturbingly large eye, but for those looking for an IoT hub that's more mobile than Alexa, it could certainly work.
Pokémon Go is getting a buddy system
Despite its initial success, Pokémon Go has been struggling to maintain its popularity. The game's active users have shrunk by more than 10 million from its mid-July peak, which makes keeping the remaining players engaged that much more important for developer Niantic Labs. The studio is introducing a new feature in the form of a buddy system that might add an interesting dynamic to the game.
The Alpha 2 robot will dance its way into your house and your heart
The field of human-like household robots got a little more crowded today as Ubtech Robotics launched a crowdfunding campaign for its new Alpha 2 humanoid companion-bot. This diminutive domestic drone is designed on the same premise as today's smartphones -- that is, it offers a responsive, intuitive and attractive platform on which to build intelligent and useful functionality. As such, the Alpha 2 is fully programmable, operates on an open-source OS and offers cutting-edge sensory inputs including ultrasonic, touch and pressure sensors. And unlike Pepper and Buddy, Alpha 2 actually has legs. In fact, with more than 20 servos packed into its joints, this robot is surprisingly spry.
Buddy the robot wants to be your modern-day Rosie
Personal companion robots have been around for ages, but they've never really been able to live up to our expectations. Everybody wants Rosie from The Jetsons, but we seem to always wind up with Paulie's Robot from Rocky. While previous companion bots like the AIBO or NAO have found moderate acceptance among consumers, they've mainly been novelties: toys rather than tools. That disappointing streak could finally be at an end, though, thanks to Blue Frog Robotics' new mechanical companion, Buddy. This little guy has R2-D2's versatility but with Wall-E's emotive abilities. The BFR team recently stopped by Engadget's San Francisco office to show off an early version of the device. Despite a few quirks with the prototype they demoed, Buddy could soon find a place in your home and your heart.
Leaked T-Mobile roadmap outlines Ice Cream Sandwich updates, new myTouch devices
Looks like our friends over at TMoNews have unearthed a roadmap with some tasty morsels of info about what's coming down the pipe from T-Mobile USA in the next few months. Of course, none of this is set in stone or even confirmed, so take it with a grain of salt. Most interesting is a pair of dates for Ice Cream sandwich updates, with Magenta's Galaxy S II slated to receive Android 4.0 on May 14th, followed by the Sensation 4G and Amaze 4G getting ICS (with Sense 3.6, presumably) on June 16th. A bunch of device launches from Samsung and Huawei round up the list of dates, with no sign of HTC's One X, Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S III, or T-Mobile's rumored Galaxy Note variant. Sadness. Huawei Ascend G312 (U8680) lands at FCC, unsurprisingly sports T-Mobile myTouch moniker
It's far from a secret that T-Mobile has been cooking up its next myTouch handset with Huawei (also known as the Ascend G312), and now a phone bearing the same moniker has landed at the door of the FCC. According to the label location diagrams, it plays nice with HSPA, UMTS, GPRS, GSM and Edge, but there's no indication of whether this Huawei U8680 is the QWERTY variant we spotted at the company's headquarters. If you'll recall, Huawei has this 4-inch (WVGA) device pegged to ship with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, running atop a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255T SoC with 1GB of RAM that's supplemented by 4GB of on-board storage. Of course, this doesn't leave us with any more information about when T-Mobile will officially debut this next-gen myTouch, but for now, you can can view the currently available FCC documents at the source link below.
T-Mobile's next MyTouch: Huawei Ascend G312 QWERTY hands-on
First the leaked product shots, then the Mr. Blurrycam pictures, and now the real deal in our own hands! When we spotted this upcoming T-Mobile MyTouch slider, we just so happened to be chilling out at Huawei's headquarters in Shenzhen where the phone was displayed as the Ascend G312 QWERTY, or "Buddy" according to the "About phone" info ("MyTouch Buddy"?). We didn't see the non-QWERTY variant, but judging by the name, we don't doubt that there's also an Ascend G312 lurking somewhere.Anyhow, this new MyTouch packs a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255T chip, a 4-inch WVGA screen, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage and microSD expansion, along with features like DLNA connectivity and five-second fast boot. As for image capturing you get a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera plus a five-megapixel main camera (with 720p recording) on the back, and you'll find a handy camera button at the usual place as well. Interestingly, the spec sheet listed Ice Cream Sandwich while the demo unit was only running on Android 2.3.6, so we'll probably need to wait for T-Mobile's final say on this end.During our quick hands-on we were pretty satisfied by the phone's overall build quality, especially with its spring-loaded sliding mechanism and keyboard feedback. The screen isn't the best in class when it comes to viewing angle and contrast, but bearing in mind that this phone comes with a Snapdragon S2 processor, we expect it to be priced almost as sensibly as LG's MyTouch handsets -- stay tuned for the official announcement, of course. i-Station Z3D 7-inch 3D Android tablet requires glasses, how convenient
Come on, you knew it would come to this. In an industry obsessed with 3D as a means of boosting sales, somebody was bound to introduce a 3D tablet that requires glasses (polarized, no doubt). While other companies like Sharp have 3D tablet ambitions designed around its glassesless parallax barrier display technology, Korea's i-Station has bolted from the gate with a 7-inch (800x480) Z3D 3D tablet featuring the Android 2.1 OS, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, FM radio, 5000mAh high capacity battery, DMB television, either 32GB or 64GB or storage (depending upon model), and 1080p video support. And really, what could be more convenient than carrying around an extra pair of glasses just for viewing 3D content? A stylus perhaps? One can only hope. Of course, i-Station has plenty of tablet options to choose from including the similarly spec'd "i-Station Dude" and miniature "Buddy," all pictured above just for you pal. Expect the Z3D to launch in November for KRW600,000 or right around $500. A few more pics after the break.
METROBuddy electric car debuts, kind of resembles a mail van
Looking from behind, one might assume that the METROBuddy is an electric car with style. Unfortunately, those hopes are dashed when peeking the whole whip from the side, as you suddenly become overwhelmed with hints of USPS mail van, garbage truck and a rather large protractor. Design gripes aside, our good pals over at AutoblogGreen were able to sneak a peek at the bantam automobile, which supposedly packs a range of around 50 to 75 miles on a full charge. There's been no mention yet of a price or global release (don't get your hopes up on the latter), but feel free to have a better look around in the vid just past the break.[Via AutoblogGreen]
10.2-inch Averatec Buddy now on sale for $450
Finally, a netbook with a name cute enough to fit the design. Averatec's 10.2-inch Buddy is now on sale after becoming official late last month, and it's in stock for shipment to boot. As a refresher, you'll get a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 802.11b/g WiFi, Ethernet, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, a WXGA panel, 4-in-1 multicard reader, three USB 2.0 ports and Windows XP Home running the show. Oh, and Averatec's own e-store asserts that this 10.2-inch machine has a 12.1-inch LCD, but you know better than that. Yours now for $449.99.[Via thegadgetsite]
Averatec's 10.2-inch netbook just wants to be your Buddy
We knew it was coming, and now Averatec's officially unveiled the Buddy, another 10.2-inch, Atom N270-based netbook. It's not straying far from that template laid down by the Eee 1000 and Wind, but the more recent photos we've dug up seem to show that it's not a straight up Wind rebadge as previously implied -- which could be a good or bad thing, depending on Averatec's attention to detail and / or OEM partner. The laptop manages 1GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD, Windows XP Home and WiFi for a reasonable $450, and should be hitting retail shelves and online stores soon.
sakku's Solar Buddy bag proves these things can be sexy
Yeah, Noon Solar's collection of sun-lovin' bags are pretty stylish, but outside of that, we haven't seen a single one we'd be caught dead (or alive) with... until now. sakku has introduced the Solar Buddy for those who just need something tossed over their shoulder, and while the solar panel is unmistakable, the bag still manages to go easy on the eyes. Reportedly, the knapsacks are constructed from recycled material, and while the "direct" model charges portable gadgetry directly (big shock, right?), the "akku" model actually includes a battery pack that can be juiced for use in darkened alleyways and the like. A tad steep at €175 ($271) / €245 ($380) in order of mention, but it's probably a design premium we'd be willing to pay.[Via Gizmodiva]

Unless you've been under a rock somewhere, or playing the single most awesome MMO to be released by any company at any time ever, you may have noticed that Age of Conan has recently launched. The immense tide of people wanting to join the Beta has been followed by a similarly vast number of people paying to get in, and on the heels of that, we have now have the gargantuan flood of people wanting to try it out for free with a Buddy Key. Given that the (now sold out) Collector's Edition included five of these delicious free tastes of Hyborian goodness, the impact of all the Buddy Keys being activated can be likened to a battlefield full of bellowing Spartans all piling on to the same bouncy castle.So, don't be surprised that the Buddy Keys aren't active yet. The Devs want to let the first wave of paying players get settled in, and give the servers a chance to catch their breath, have a nice cup of tea and a sit down before the next lot arrive. Will it be worth the wait? Absolutely.
MotorStorm gets friendlier
Last night's MotorStorm patch brought a much needed friends list to Evolution's off-road racer. A relief. And also an embarrassment. Whose call was it to put MotorStorm out there for two weeks without buddy compatibility?It may have been a minute inconvenience -- given that it was swiftly remedied -- but the haphazardness of the matter is indicative of the PlayStation Network. That's not to say Xbox Live titles aren't without their necessary patches and bug fixes; au contraire, online "updates" have become standard. But a friends list? Would enforcing some very basic PSN requirements really cost Sony its freedom?[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Intempo Digital's Buddy pink GPS
This one goes out to all the ladies and lovers of pink: feeling a little estranged by all the man-gadgets, or tiring of the unisex gray / black plastic or metal look? Intempo Digital's new Buddy (no, not the De La Soul kind of Buddy) is pink, and that's about it -- they're pretty shy with specs and any hard information on the unit, but from what we can tell, it does 2D and 3D maps, has the usual history and favorite locations, POIs, and is, um, pink. As you can probably tell, the selling point here is pink. Of course, we'd like to think the kinds of ladies who read Engadget wouldn't merely be wooed into buying anything due to its heteronormatively femmy color, but remember what a great gift the pink RAZR turned out to be, guys?[Via Shiny Shiny]
