Sure there's guns galore in this Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare launch trailer, but virtual Kevin Spacey overshadows all of them. Pre-ordering will get you 24 hour early access (along with double XP and a bunch of guns) but really, we just want more of that handsome man. Mmm. [Image: Activision]

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. "Better eight years late than never," PlayStation Network users probably said during this week's return of Vib-ribbon. Sure, we're not exactly in drought season, but what's stopping you from impulsively bailing on 2014's release calendar to revisit a 1999 cult classic? Beyond money and life's responsibilities, anyway. If Vib-ribbon is fair game for a 2014 appearance, can we go ahead and get our hopes for comparably-unlikely surprises? Sure, StarCraft: Ghost's indefinitely-on-hold status is probably irreversible at this point, but if Blizzard felt like continuing development in secret for years and launching it without warning, we wouldn't be upset. Valve, you're more than welcome to do the same with fresh installments in the Half Life or Left 4 Dead series. There was more to this week than feeble wishes though, including resolution news for Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Assassin's Creed: Unity, reviews for Driveclub and Neverending Nightmares, and previews for AC: Unity and Resident Evil: Revelations 2. All those and more are tidied up for you after the break!

If you buy downloadable versions of the upcoming Call of Duty on PS3 or Xbox 360, you can advance your warfare onto PS4 or Xbox One for free. That's the deal Activision's offering until March 31, 2015: customers who purchase a "Digital Edition" of the last-gen version of Advanced Warfare can upgrade to the current-gen version at no extra cost. So if you buy it on Xbox 360, you get the Xbox One version for nada and you still retain the 360 license, meaning the Xbox One version is essentially a bonus freebie. The deal is slightly different on PlayStation platforms in that the shooter is now a Cross-Buy game. That means the offer works in reverse. So if you buy Advanced Warfare on PSN for PS4, you can also download it on PS3, as well as vice-versa.

This latest Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare trailer does two things: It offers fans their first look at the game's four-player co-op Exo Survival gameplay mode, and it handily demonstrates that no amount of futuristic gunplay can overshadow Kevin Spacey when he's in full scenery-chewing supervillain mode. Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games bring to mind Respawn's Titanfall with the XS1 Goliath, a powerful suit of armor awaiting skilled players in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's multiplayer component. We've got some exclusive footage of the Goliath in action above. Players earn access to the Goliath via scorestreaks and other accomplishments while jetpacking around Advanced Warfare's multiplayer arenas. As was the case with Titanfall's Titans, players must mark an outdoor, unobstructed spot on the battlefield before dropping a Goliath capsule and wreaking armor-plated havoc. • The futuristic perks of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

When Call of Duty first leapt forward in time, barreling out of World War II and into a contemporary theater, we got a new benchmark for the shooter series. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare isn't just praised because it has better guns, newer cities and cell phones, however; it rises in memory because of a breakneck pace, sudden turns in the storyline and a well-constructed multiplayer suite. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare isn't the first game in the series to draw from far-fetched research and prototype weaponry, but it's already presented as a thunderous step into the future. In the hierarchy of vague subtitles, we're to understand that "advanced" is ahead of "modern." According to the marketing, the game has changed because your soldier is encased in powerful exoskeletal armor. But while Activision grafts the game to the front-loaded theme of power – your powerful guns, your powerful Exo Suit, your powerful POWER – the undressed reality is simple. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has the benefit of a three-year development cycle and a handful of fresh designs in multiplayer.

Sledgehammer Games sits down with Xbox Live's Major Nelson for the very first live stream of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's multiplayer. What does it look like when Call of Duty players slip back into the series' trademark shootouts sporting lasers and jetpacks like a bunch of GI Joe characters? It's going to look a whole lot like this. The stream starts at 1PM EST, so watch here! [Images: Activision]

If you've got an itchy trigger finger and that over-the-counter cream just isn't satisfying it, you might want to check out the GameStop Expo going on September 9 and September 10 at the Anaheim Convention Center. According to a news release from GameStop, it'll feature the first public, playable build of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in North America. So if you want to get a headstart on those killstreaks, this might be a way to go about it. Of course, if you're not particularly interested in Call of Duty: Kevin Spacey Edition Advanced Warfare, there will be plenty of other games at the show as well, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Alien: Isolation and of course, Video Game, Colon, Subtitle. Tickets for the expo can be purchased through GameStop's website. Until August 15, general admission tickets will cost $40, while a VIP pass will run $110. After August 15, the cost of general admission rises to $50, while the VIP jumps to $125. [Image: GameStop]

Developer Sledgehammer Games will introduce Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's multiplayer during Gamescom 2014. What's that, you say? Checking out of reality for a week to go play games in Germany is a bit infeasible? Well as long as you can get on Xbox Live, there's a consolation prize: Sledgehammer's trailer reveal will be broadcasted live on Xbox Live at 1 p.m. Eastern on August 11, with interviews also planned during the presentation. That Xbox locked in a multiplayer reveal on its own channels shouldn't be much of a surprise, considering that Advanced Warfare's DLC will arrive on Xbox One before any other platform. Hopefully Sledgehammer has some neat game modes in store for us – we can only entertain ourselves by fighting Kevin Spacey's army for so long. [Image: Activision]

Between the bang-bangs and the pew-pew-pews, developer Sledgehammer Games is using Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare to tell a story. The game's latest trailer proves as much. It seems terrorists have attacked nuclear power plants all over the globe in a show of unlikely coordination that causes the world's governments to topple. In the wake of this collapse, a private military corporation rises to restore order to humanity. Unfortunately, that corporation is lead by Kevin Spacey in full megalomaniac mode, and after cleaning up the streets he uses his company's military might to assume de facto control over the planet. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the planet from one of America's finest living actors? If you do, will any scenery remain unchewed? Find out on November 4 when Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare makes its official debut. [Image: Activision]

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare DLC will come to Xbox One first. "Xbox One owners will be the first to play the add-on content," Xbox head Phil Spencer said during Microsoft's E3 conference. Historically, Xbox receives Call of Duty DLC a few weeks before it hits Sony systems and PC. Microsoft demoed Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on-stage, and it features soldiers, skyscrapers and unmanned aerial drones.

Following a recent leak of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Activision has sent out new screenshots (found in the gallery below) and a claim that it is approaching this latest entry in the fan-favorite franchise "differently" than it has with prior releases. Not only does the game ignore traditional military forces in favor of Private Military Contractors (justified in their existence by the gravitas of Kevin Spacey playing antagonist, Jonathan Irons), it's also the first time developer Sledgehammer Games has lead a Call of Duty production. Activision has allotted the new developer a comparatively lengthy three-year development cycle to craft the shooter. Activision's announcement is light on plot specifics, but notes that players will assume the role of a technologically advanced soldier fighting as part of a PMC in 2054. Apparently humanity never quite figured out world peace, so expect typically over the top Call of Duty gunplay, augmented by new gadgets, like the exoskeleton seen in the trailer above. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is slated to debut on November 4 on Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4. [Image: Activision]

Update: Activision's posted the official trailer, confirming Destructoid's leak. The new Spacey-based shooter is Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and it's out on November 4, 2014. Earlier today, Destructoid said it learned through a "trusted source" the game centers on a mercenary group led by Kevin Spacey's character, and this renegade faction has the US government in its sights. That tallied with what Activision's teased, and the publisher's now released an official video ahead of the expected reveal on Sunday, May 4. The trailer showcases futuristic elements like soldiers clad in beefy-looking exoskeletons, and a whole bunch of hover-things including hover-bikes(!). We'll keep you updated on further details as they trickle out. [Image: Destructoid]

  • Activision registers several 'Call of Duty: _ Warfare' domains

    by
    JC Fletcher

    05.13.2010

Superannuation has spotted a series of domain names registered by Activision, for variations on the names "Call of Duty: Future Warfare," "Advanced Warfare," "Secret Warfare" and "Space Warfare," as well as those same names with "2" and "3" appended to the end. These don't all necessarily refer to future Call of Duty games. The fact that all of these were registered makes it likely that Activision is securing domains for potential future projects, even before those projects exist in any form, to avoid having to pay domain squatters later. Or, one of these could be a real game, and the rest a clever smokescreen by Activision, to prevent us from knowing which is real. It would be smart on Activision's part to use at least one of these -- after all, they all have most of the same words as "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare," which we understand to have been rather successful. Superannuation speculates that one of these could refer to Sledgehammer Games' new Call of Duty game, which kind of makes sense -- if it's apparently going to be a drastic change in genre, why not a more fantastic, futuristic setting?
