  • Homebrew app Ocarina makes cheating that much easier

You've got to love the Homebrew community. They're constantly trying to cut corners and this latest app, Ocarina, is no different. Instead of spending time inputting button commands in-game, you can simply inject them, Game Genie or Action Replay-style, into the game. For example, in Twilight Princess, the Ocarina app allows the user to climb ladders super fast, have infinite bombs and use a variety of items underwater. Among other things, Link can also use the Spinner in a really imaginative way. [Thanks, RupeeClock!] The homebrew community has been hard at work creating wonderful experiences for you to enjoy with your Wii. Did you know about homebrew game Masteroids? Or how about the shmup OpenTyrian? Outside of games, people have been using the Balance Board to come up with some really neat stuff. Keep up with the homebrew scene by staying current with our Homebrew category!

  • Make short work of Mario Kart Wii's Grumble Volcano

This video demonstrates a totally cheap shortcut for jerks -- or if you're playing single-player, a really cool shortcut -- in Mario Kart Wii's Grumble Volcano track. With the judicious use of a mushroom, you can avoid the track altogether and rack up record-breaking lap times without being troubled by any of those obstacles or opponents that are always ruining your records. We really doubt this will give anyone a significant advantage online. In fact, it's going to be very funny to see entire groups of online players trying to crowd onto this tiny rock at the beginning of every race, leaving smart racers a wide-open track.%Gallery-23399%[Via GayGamer]

Liberty City can be a tough place to live. Trying to make an honest living in Grand Theft Auto IV as a hardened criminal just ain't as easy as it used to be. Sometimes you need to cheat. You play as a thief and a murderer, why not be a cheater, too. Oh dear, if only your mother could see how far you've fallen. Watch the video to see the cheats work their magic. To read up on the full list and how to do them, check that out after the break.[Thanks, Chris!]

Update: Comments for this story confirm that using some of these cheats will not allow you to unlock certain achievements.Having a tough time getting your revenge on in Liberty City? Thankfully Game Trailers user GhettoChild discovered the cheat codes in Grand Theft Auto IV for everything from restoring health to spawning an Annihilator helicopter. Using the in-game cell phone you dial the phone numbers to activate the code. While we haven't been able to confirm it, we assume using any cheats will no longer allow you to unlock any achievements and based on Rockstar's past with using codes, you may be unable to watch the final cinematic in the game.Don't say we didn't warn you. Codes after the jump.[Thanks, Chris]

  • New Call of Duty 4 cheat caught on tape

You can take the above video in two ways: one way is to see how these people pulled off a new cheat in Call of Duty 4 and replicate on your own time. The other way is to see what the cheat is so you can totally get people banned for using it in matches against you. The latter is much more fun, because you get to ruin people's fun for real instead of racking up points in a make-believe world. Still, it's entertaining to see, so enjoy.[via Digg]

  • Burning Legion server either exploits us.gorgonnash.info or is first to Phase 4

Apparently, the Burning Legion is either as deadly and implacable as the army they are named for, or as false and tricky. Us.gorgonnash.info is now reporting them as having come from behind to unlock Phase 4 the first of all servers. Given that they are a PvP server, this would be an especially amazing show of determination and server togetherness. However, given that, until only a few hours ago, they were only 37% according to the site, according to Trade chat on the Burning Legion server (Thanks, Zulama), and according to a poster on this thread, it seems more likely that someone tampered with their upload file to fool the site. It's honestly rather disappointing that someone has decided to tamper with a trustworthy group effort like the gorgonnash.info website. I know we're all better than that. So to all of you who've been faithfully uploading legitimate info to the site, and to all of you who have been working hard to help your servers unlock each phase, I say congratulations, and thank you. Hopefully, one jerk from the Burning Legion server doesn't dampen our spirits. %Gallery-19980% Edit: Thanks to Unagieater of the Burning Legion server for confirming via screenshot in the comments that this is a hoax. The server is only about 41% complete with Phase 3 as of this edit.

  • Spoiler Mario Galaxy: tons of secrets revealed

Since we've marked this Super Mario Galaxy video as containing SPOILERS, we're fairly certain that none of you will watch it. Therefore, we can tell you things about the video that may or may not be true, like that it features a heartfelt tribute to Clu Clu Land, and you won't know for certain if we're lying. Did you know that you can subscribe to Famitsu via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, just by jumping into a certain pipe? We won't say which one. Actually (and don't kill us if you watch it and disagree) we find most of the tricks highlighted in the video to be of the non-spoiler variety. There is the occasional secret here and there, but mostly we see glitches and a few helpful moves that should have been in the instruction manual. We also see a few extremely obvious things regarding Star Bits, which probably are in the instruction manual. Is your fear of being spoiled more powerful than your curiosity? [Via GayGamer]

  • The evolution of game extras

The Associated Press describes how cheat codes, Easter eggs, unlockables, and in-game advertising are converging as marketers try to create more money and drive more game sales. While the article takes a broad swipe at the topic, and it's just plain wrong at times -- Easter eggs are "brightly decorated circles or balls ... that [unlock] bonus points, monster-slaying swords, extra lives, or infinite health" -- it covers the evolution of cheats and Easter eggs. These tricks used to be added by programmers as a way to surprise gamers, but they've become co-opted by marketing departments that release the secrets on a schedule to raise interest in a game. With unlockable content, its transition to a for-pay service bothers us. We don't begrudge publishers the opportunity to change their business model to give gamers more options to buy a game; instead, the trend seems to be selling us the same game more than once. Where are the cheaper games with for-pay content?

While driving around using the GPS system will get you some characters, the coolest ones have to be earned through the game. Or... through these cheats. • Extreme airtime in GTA:LCS

Weekends aren't usually filled with breaking news, so it's usually the time we look back and reflect on the cooler aspects of the PSP community. I'm not too interested in the musings of an illiterate fanboy, but I am totally awe-inspired by the crazy things that people have been doing in GTA:LCS. The cheat devices for GTA have come a long way since the first time PSP Fanboy reported on it. People are now defying all logic, performing gravity-defying tricks, riding on walls, spawning helicopters and even creating trick ramps for those that want Liberty City to be one giant level of Tony Hawk. Here's some of my favorites from the GTA cheats and trick community.

  • Griefing and self-governance in online games

    by

The Guardian has produced an excellent column that addresses the problem of "griefers", people that abuse, team-kill and cheat other players of online games, particularly MMOs. Griefing has always been a problem where real players compete against their peers, although with massively multiplayer online games the problem has become much more serious. Earning a battleship in Eve Online or crafting a special item in World of Warcraft can take weeks if not months of game time. On top of that, the recent trend for people to sell items on auction sites like eBay has meant that rare online items have a monetary value. The article cites several high profile situations where griefers have bent moral codes with the Guiding Hand Social Club's ruination of Ubiqua Seraph in Eve Online and the funeral crash in WoW being the two main examples. Solutions that companies have come up with to limit these types of situations from happening are also looked at with the Xbox Live points system and strong community measures (like guilds and friend lists) being top on the list of letting players self-govern the problem. Effective community governance is essential if companies want to keep players inside the game and so that the owners don't have to resort to more drastic measures, like Blizzard does with its periodic account banning binges.Update: fixed a couple of minor grammatical errors.

  • How to Spot a Bot Farmer

I'm not sure if this counts as racial profiling or not, but the official Blizzard forums have an interesting thread on ways to spot a bot farmer. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a bot farmer is a program, running without direct human control, used by lowdown, cheating gold farmers to collect money in the game without even having to actually play it.The thread lists several different, highly debatable (all alliance bots are Night Elf females?), criteria for spotting a bot , and even gives some screenshots & video examples to back them up. I don't know how close to the truth it actually is, but it's an interesting read. I've never knowingly come across a bot myself (although I probably have & didn't realize it), but I'll be keeping a curious eye out after reading this...

  • Blizzard Suspends Thousands of Accounts

Gold farmers beware: Blizzard has been cracking down hard on TOS violations since the 1.10 patch, and according to the official website, they have cancelled over 5,000 accounts & suspended another 10,000 for using third-party programs & other cheats in order to secure gold or items in the game.I, for one, applaud Blizzard's stance & tenacity on this subject...but I also think they're fully aware that those 15,000 or so people will just be plunking down another $50 for the game again soon, so it's win/win for the boys in blue. I still like the crucifixion idea, myself...

  • POLL: Do you buy gold?

Following today's trend of activities some find unethical, here's a head-scratcher for you. Many services have sprung up across the Internet offering in-game gold for real-world cash, marketed by gold farming corporations.  Scraping together enough for your mount may seem like a drudge at times, and especially for the casual player who hasn't the time to run thousands of instances, buying gold seems like an easy option to "catch up". What's your stance on buying gold?Sorry, this poll is now closed. Thanks for voting.View Results

  • An Interview With a WoW Bot Programmer

    by

One of the reasons I enjoy WoW is because of the human and social interaction built into it. Grouping, questing, and raiding is one of the more fun aspects of the game, despite sometimes running into some pretty annoying group members. So I've never been tempted to use one of the many bot programs available out there. Despite being explicitly prohibited by Blizzard, many people continue to use bots to level up their characters automatically, or to farm for gold, or to execute otherwise impossible maneuvers in the game. For instance, there's a hack that allows you to teleport to anywhere in the game, including normally off-limits areas and areas still under development.TG Daily has a pretty interesting interview with Mercury, the programmer for the bot called WoWGlider, which allows you to level up your character with minimal effort. The bot is programmed to fight monsters and mobs in the game by itself and collect the loot.I won't ever use a bot myself since I don't want to risk being banned by Blizzard, but I can understand why many people would be tempted.
