  • Dalaran might be Alliance-only

Sorun is a rogue who loves his Horde-Alliance conflict. As he posted on the forums, he feels that every action and little quest in the World of Warcraft should reflect the reality of War that exists in that world, not the good old intra-faction get-together that Shattrath has turned out to be. If Dalaran is going to be a neutral city in Wrath of the Lich King, however, it could really mess up the lore and war-filled feeling of the game:Neutral Dalaran? How does that even make any sense when horde to this day have quests to go attack the ruins of dalaran and can and have been freely killing the wizzards [sic] all around that area. He's got a point there. What is Blizzard really going to do with Dalaran in the next expansion? Read on to see what Blizzard says about it.

Easy one today: what's your favorite city in the World of Warcraft? Even though I'm Horde through and through, I have to say I really love Darnassus. It was the first "big city" I encountered in the game, and at the time I didn't even know places like Stormwind, Orgrimmar, and Ironforge existed. It's fairly simple to navigate, and the huge buildings and floaty forest atmosphere-- especially the Temple of Elune-- make the whole place uniquely magical. It's a shame that it's off the beaten path, because it really is a great city. And while I know it's probably the first city a lot of people think of, Shattrath is a cool city, too. I don't think it's actually my favorite city, but on the first night I ever played Burning Crusade, I remember cresting the hill from Zangarmarsh, seeing that big pillar of light coming out of the center of Shattrath, and realizing I was finally playing something new in WoW. I can only hope that seeing Dalaran in Northrend lives up to the experience. And by city, I don't just mean huge metropolis, either-- I really like Sun Rock Retreat, and visiting Freewind Post at the top of Thousand Needles is always fun, too (in fact, Thunder Bluff is great for that sense of height as well). So where's your favorite settlement in the whole world (of Warcraft)?

Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a retro-speculative.Talking about the execrable Renegade last week put us in a Technos kind of mood. It's not really fair to Technos or to you to focus only on their one terrible NES game. Let's cleanse our palates together with a good Kunio game. River City Ransom EX is a Game Boy Advance remake of the NES River City Ransom, which is significantly improved in almost every respect-- except boxart, unfortunately.

Proving once and for all that virgin sacrifices to a multitude of shadowy deities does in fact yield results, a rather confused EA finally announced a stateside version of SimCity DS (based off of SimCity 3000), that lovable juego de ciudad from our long-forgotten youths. Some extra features that you may or may not have known about? It turns out you can put out fires by blowing into the mic of the DS (hardly a substitute for proper fire fighters, we think). You can "sign off" on various deeds and proclaimations with a whip of the stylus, and there will apparently be some form of wireless data exchange. Our guess is that players will able to "neighborize", by which one another's cities will become adjacent in the game's geography.City-snatching UFOs, here we come![Thanks, Tom!]

Siliconera was lucky enough to get a copy of EA's SimCity DS recently and spoke about the game mode they've been sinking most of their time into the game's "save the city" mode. This mode takes the player and tosses them into a pre-built city that has just suffered a catastrophe (such as the pictured giant ape attack). The player is then charged with rebuilding the city back up. Other scenarios include UFO attacks and fixing traffic problems. The more we see and read on this game, the more we must have it. We can't be alone, can we?

  • Raleigh officials envision "world's first" LED lit city

While it's no secret that LEDs light up the night in a more efficient (albeit expensive) manner, few locales have given the idea of lighting up the town en masse with LEDs any serious consideration. In a feat that would surely oust Brussles' Dexia Tower in terms of magnitude, city officials in Raleigh, North Carolina are hoping to make the Capital City the "world's first LED city." Reportedly envisioned by the mayor, officials are teaming up with RTP-based Cree, Inc. in order to "save money and help the environment," and in a pilot program completed late last year, a LED-equipped parking deck purportedly burned "40-percent less energy" than those with "standard lighting systems." Additionally, the quality and brightness of the lighting was said to have improved, which paved the way for LEDs to hit up street lights, architectural and accent lighting, and pedestrian and walkway lights over the next 18 months. If things go as planned, the entire city will "convert permanently to LED lighting," hopefully saving around $80,000 a year in parking deck utility bills alone -- and hey, if nobody in charge can figure out how to use an extra 80 large per year, there's a few potholes craters on Hillsborough Street that could use some attention.[Via TWW]

  • Gamecube for Wii credit, and tomorrow's chaos

Perhaps some of you are reading this article via your smartphone, waiting in bitter cold weather because you're sick and tired of not having a precious Nintendo Wii. We understand. Tomorrow's deluge of Wii's, which should be occurring at many nation-wide outlets (Best Buy, Target, and Circuit City all seem to be proper candidates), may make many people quite happy. It may make many people really, really pissed off. While you might be willing to spend whatever it takes, we have a bit of thrifty advice. First off, EB Games is taking your soon-to-be-completely-worthless Gamecube as fifty dollars of trade-in credit for a Wii. Normally, they only give twenty-five. While EBG and Gamestop have not been officially confirmed as having units available for tomorrow, it's worth a phone call (why would they advertise such a deal if it were impossible to use?). Also, it seems Tower Records is having a massive sale, with 25% off of pretty much everything, including games. Pick 'em up cheap! And good luck, troopers.[Thanks, Dave and Vincent!]

  • New Sim City DS screens, no US announcement yet

Courtesy of NeoGAF, some new screens for the highly-desired Sim City DS, which is releasing in Japan next month, have hit the internet and caused many a DS Fanboy staff member to salivate uncontrollably. A game that is, in essence, just a port of Sim City 3000, we still find ourselves wishing for some city-building action on-the-go.What we cannot wrap our head around, however, is just why this game hasn't been officially announced for the states yet? Is it something we said, Japan? Perhaps we were too rough on you last night? We promise we'll be more gentle next time! It's just, we love you so much ...See also: Sim City DS screens and info New Sim City DS screens Will Wright in Sim City DS? [Via Joystiq]

While some lucky members of our staff are able to enjoy the Wii as we speak, most of us have to wait. We've been waiting for a long, long time. It's felt like agony at points, some ethereal event that would never really happen. We are seven days away, people, one lousy week. Get ready for the tents, the bitter cold, the local DS multiplayer, and the greasy fast food runs. Get ready for the lines, the excitement, the anticipation and the reward. With that in mind, we'd like to inform you that Nintendo Wii Fanboy will be on location in Times Square, New York for the official global launch party of the Nintendo Wii. We'll be doing live updates from the event (pending hot spot availability) and video coverage as well. If you live within reasonable distance, we encourage you to come ... it's gonna be one hell of a party.

We're not based in Kansas City, which isn't so much a bad thing, but it does keep us from receiving certain newspapers on a regular basis. One writer for the Kansas City Star had a few things to say about the DS Lite and a certain game for it known as Super Princess Peach. Stating that she "never thought I'd be one of those people who would choose a video game over a party," Jeneé Osterheldt has first-hand felt the fever we all so frequently fail from: Nintendo fever. So whether you want to consider her personal experience a downward spiral of self-loathing and disgust akin to how one gets hooked on, and subsequently dies from, drugs or a clever look at the appeal of gaming in the modern world, it's all an interesting read.[Via Go Nintendo]

In sitting down with ABC News, Reggie Fils-Aime does the usual PR thing to promote the Wii, talking up the innovative features of the console and the company's goals to bring their product to people in all walks of life, hardcore gamers and those who do not traditionally play games alike, but more interestingly reveals that he will be on-hand at Nintendo's store in New York city to hand out consoles during launch (he says "a store in NYC," but it's safe to assume it'll be at Nintendo's store). Obviously, he makes no mention of needing to kick your ass and/or take your name to get your hands on a Wii, so we assume you'll need your check card, or the good old cash standard. Some new Sim City DS screens have surfaced, and if we weren't dying for this game before, we're certainly in danger of perishing now. The DS just seems like such an incredible medium for this title, and the screens have a familiar, almost nostalgic feel that brings to mind the old SNES game Utopia, particularly in the shot to the right. Our (Google) translation isn't perfect, but it looks like this build of the game is not a port, but was designed specifically for the DS, so we can tentatively expect some really fantastic functionality. Further, there are changes to the game made specifically for the Japanese version. Once we get more detail on what those are, we'll let you know -- and that makes us very curious if English-language versions will feature similar additions.Check after the jump for a few more screens.

  • Wii news and how the DS was affected

    09.14.2006

Nintendo's US press event recently concluded and while all of your Wii information needs have probably been satisfied, nothing else was discussed about Wii-DS connectivity. We know that Iwata already said that the WiiConnect24 service could be used to download content to the DS, whether it be a demo or something else, and also that the DS could also be used as a controller through the Wii's menu interface, but this was not demonstrated at the event or further discussed there. So what does this mean? Probably nothing. We should still see Nintendo's handheld play a large role in the Wii's interactivity and extra content. We should still see the DS downloading demos from the WiiConnect24 service. We should still see the DS being used as a controller to navigate menus in the Wii's interface. Just because Nintendo didn't show any of the features you'll be able to access on the Wii through the DS doesn't mean they aren't coming. We should be seeing and hearing more on the two consoles interacting as the launch date for the Wii draws near.

We've already informed you of the contest and like the tough, determined reader you are, you've no doubt abducted your grandparent of choice from their nursing home or other place of residence and put them on a strict gaming regimen much like that of a fictitious boxer. We know you take these things seriously and look forward to winning those 2 DS Lites and 10 games. But, in case you decide you'd rather disappoint us, you could stop by for the 10% discount on all things purchased. Any of you readers planning on stopping by the event? Take some pictures and send them in. Maybe tell us how the competition went down?

  • RUMOR: Circuit City to sell Mitsubishi and JVC TVs

    by

    07.17.2006

We have some unconfirmed, but yet it comes from reliable sources, that Circuit City is going to announce sometime soon that they are going to start selling Mitsubishi and JVC HDTVs. So far all we know is that The City is going to sell Mitsubishi plasmas and LCDs; hopefully, they are going to sell their DLPs too. We don't know much about their role with JVC just yet, but we are hoping that this announcement is going to made soon so we can get more info. This could give the consumers a choice for different types of DLPs rather then Samsungs in Circuit City. It seems that Circuit City is really pushing the mid to high-end home CE market. This seems to be the opposite of what Best Buy is doing with making more in-house branded products. Case in point if these TVs do develop but also, Circuit City is also going to sell Denon and Boston Acoustics products as they are pushing out Harmon Kardon and Infinity. We will keep you updated on this as it hopefully move from a rumor to news.[thanks to everyone that sent this in]

  • Beware: PSP being used by kids to access porn

    06.02.2006

Apparently kids are getting together at schools and using their PSPs to access pornography "out of thin air." Based on the article, this was what a Minnesota resident by the name of Jeff Harris was doing, which garnished him with a grounding of a month and an in-school suspension. Supposedly, the kid used his PSP to tap into the school's wireless Internet access and then surfed some adult websites, boasting to his friends, no doubt, that his "haxxoring" was "teh l33tn3ss". Never mind that the school didn't have a WEP Key enabled network or that they're apparently fine with students bringing in distracting electronics period. Still, I guess everyone has a point, it's not like he was using his PSP for normal purposes like running over pedestrians and beating people to death in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.[Update: Took out the part about the hookers. Slight oversight on my part, I apologize.][Via Joystiq]
