It's nothing new, it's always optional and Colin did a wonderful job discussing it. I don't have a problem with microtransactions, and haven't since I began actually learning how they affected online services and games. When Cryptic's games make more money, Atari is happier. When Atari is happier, Cryptic gets to hire more people and spend more time creating the things we love to play: MMOs.

Turbine has released twelve new screens for their revamp of Dungeons & Dragons Online, which will add the "Unlimited" modifier sometime after its current beta run. In our gallery, you'll find several looks at the various windows and interfaces in which the non-subscribing players will have the opportunity to purchase additional content piecemeal, while they play. It's pretty interesting to see a previously pure subscription style game go this direction, and we're very curious to see how it plays out for Turbine and the Dungeons & Dragons Online community. This business model shift could bring in a lot of new blood, and may in the long run bring about additional content that wouldn't have been possible to develop otherwise. If you really want to know more about the upcoming changes and exactly what they mean for DDO and its community, check out our interview with Turbine on the subject, our write-up on the topic by Massively's Colin Brennan or our recent Massively Speaking podcast with DDOCast host Jerry Snook. Can you tell we're interested in this one yet?%Gallery-66255%

  • One Shots: Honoring the Lightbringer

Before Burning Crusade came out, all World of Warcraft players had of Uther Lightbringer was lore and a grave in Andorhal. The addition of the Paladin class to the Horde with World of Warcraft's first expansion opened up the potential of giving both factions the chance to meet with the man (or at least his ghost) so crucial to the history of Azeroth. Today's One Shots comes to us from one of our very own Massively writers, Colin Brennan, who sent in this lovely shot he took honoring Uther. If you're playing a game we haven't seen in a while, why not send in a screenshot? We like to see everything from rolling landscape screens to the intense heat of battle. All you have to do is email it to us at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name, the game it's from, and a quick note about what we're seeing. We'll post it out here and give you credit for sending it in!%Gallery-9798%

Once a week our writers will give you a glimpse into their lives, to let you get to know them and the characters they play a little better. Click here to read more Meet the Team. What do you do for Massively.com? You probably know me as the opinionated guy who writes the Anti-Aliased column here on Massively, which covers the culture and dynamics of both developers and players in the MMO industry. Past that, I'm also one of the blogging staff, so you'll see a news post from me every now and then.%Gallery-33889%
