  • Japan scores 6 PSP Lite colors

America must be the land of the colorless, because Japan's launch of the new PSP will come with a color selection that outdoes our own. Six colors will debut at the Japanese PSP launch, including some metallic pastel colors that certainly look unique. Considering how the original PSP was region-free, we're expecting these to become hits with the import community as well.[Via Joystiq]

The new DS Lites have been released in Japan and have shown up on import shopping sites. That's right, for only $179 + shipping, you can have a DS Lite in one of the two new Japan-exclusive colors! You have your choice of Like the Regular DS Phat Color but on a Lite, or Like the Pink One but Shinier. Sure, you pay a premium, but it may be worth it to have a DS that looks somewhat different from other DS's in the immediate area. Depends on how you feel about the new colors! What do you think-- Gloss Silver or Gross Silver? Metallic Pink or Me-tacky Pink?

We usually tank posts on new handset colors – yes, folks, we do listen when you yell and cry out – but we're so fond of LG's Shine, that we couldn't resist this time. No reason to think they've packed any new goodies under the hood here, we're thinking it's purely a cosmetic refresh on an otherwise excellent handset. We do, however, wonder why the new palette didn't get applied to the entire handset, but are fairly sure it will find some admirers out there who appreciate the red gift-wrapping. No word on if a non-Korean version will land on our shores, but we'll be keeping our eyes peeled.[Via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

  • Xbox 360 Hot Rock Case changes color as temperature rises

As if your options when scouting a replacement Xbox 360 case weren't endless enough, here's yet another alternative to ponder. XCMLive's Hot Rock Case may not do much to actually cool your potentially toasty console, but the LED-infused enclosure sports a digital thermometer that informs users of just how warm things are getting within. Additionally, the internal lights change color depending on the temperature range, and if it gets beyond a certain point (118-degrees Fahrenheit), the obligatory "flashing red" will act as your cue to take a momentary break or submerge your console in dry ice. No word yet on pricing or availability, but be sure to check an alternate shot after the break.[Thanks, Bobb]

  • DS Daily: DS ... Liter?

It's almost (min)E3 time, and you know what that means -- wanton speculation. That's right, game fans, it's time to hop on the rumor train. So what's the story? You won't believe it. No, really. An all new DS. And no, we don't mean a new color. We here in America, we don't get new colors, because we apparently don't buy enough Brain Age. As rumors go, the idea of yet another DS redesign is not terribly un-possible. We saw several versions of the GBA, after all. But seriously, how small can we really go? Sometimes we already confuse it with the checkbook -- and our pals with larger hands occasionally complain of a little cramping as it is. And are bigger screens or a streamlined design necessary? Do we need a different (better?) DS? You decide.

  • Painted and sprinkled with fairy dust

We were galled to hear that Tinker Bell isn't technically a noblewoman, excluding the Peter Pan pixie from taking part in Disney's Princess Games, but it looks like she'll be making an appearance on the Wii anyway, despite her common fairy blood. AcidMods administrator CyberPyrot stenciled Tink's outline onto his console and coated its shell with flip flop paint to add a touch of fay magic. Depending on what angle you're viewing it from, the casing's color can appear as blue, green, or purple. There was an anxious moment, however, when a saboteur made a poisonous attempt to ruin the artwork. CyperPyrot held Tinker Bell's fading light in his trembling hands and turned to the audience, begging them to clap and yell out, "I do believe in fairies!" The viewers chanted the phrase over and over again, and wouldn't you know it, Tinker Bell was revived and cured! Think happy thoughts and take flight past the post break for more photos of the side panel project in-progress.

  • Limited edition Pikachu DS Lite system to hit Japan

We all knew this one was just a matter of time, but it sounds like the Japanese faithful will finally have the opportunity to purchase a glaring yellow Pikachu DS Lite system in the not too distant future. Of course, this isn't the first time the infamous Pokemon has taken over a Nintendo handheld, but getting your palms around this machine will be even more difficult than those other hard-to-get hues. The limited edition machine will reportedly sport Pikachu's face on the bottom right corner of the cover, include a matching yellow stylus, and in order to procure one, you'll have to show up in person at the Japanese Pokemon Center and submit your name into a lottery system. Supposedly, the winners will be able to pay their ¥16,800 ($139) and walk out happy starting on July 20th, and afterwards, the rest of you can shell out small fortunes on various auction sites if you just can't do without.[Thanks, Mitch]

  • Colorful Wiimote rumor gets revived

It was two months (to the day, actually) ago that we first got wind of the possibility that Nintendo could have a trio of colorful Wiimotes planned for the UK market, and now we've got even more reason to believe that future Wii controllers could indeed sport a few different hues. Of course, we're still filing this away as a rumor for the time being, but a fairly convincing screen shot from an Argos internal system clearly shows that a blue Wiimote has a SKU in its inventory. Additionally, the UK-based poster also stated that a pink listing was also spotted, but had no idea if any were carefully hidden in the store's back room. Still, we've no idea if or when Nintendo ever plans on releasing the slightly more vivid Wiimotes on the world, but you can go ahead and color us sour if these end up a European exclusive.

Over on Silicon Knights' IGN space, Too Human's art director Carman Dix posted an interesting article on how color is used in their upcoming game. Dix talks about the role of color, what feelings are associated with each hue and how Too Human's environments are colored to invoke the mood they wish. It's an interesting read for those of us who like getting inside the heads of the people who are involved in game development. So now that you're in the "know", you can analyze a few Too Human videos to see what emotions Silicon Knights was going for. Hint: Becoming hungry is not an option.

While the rest of you suckers are out looking like chumps with mismatched AC adapters, the more fashionable among us are rocking an $18 third-party power cord in the same color as our DS Lite. We'll leave it to you to decide if, considering that Nintendo sells their official AC adapter for $9.95, it's worth the extra money to get extremely minor home decorating assistance from Toytech. On second thought, we won't leave it to you. It's probably not worth it.

  • Two new DS Lite colors ... for Japan

What, you didn't think we'd actually get a new DS Lite variant in the US, did you? If only. If only. On June 23rd, two new colors of DS Lite will be out of stock in Japan, to complement the five colors that are already consistently sold out. Silver is a whole new option for the DS Lite, and the sheer glossiness of these two new colors makes us wonder if we won't perhaps be seeing all new metallic spins of Ice Blue and Enamel Navy.Call out your sales predictions for the week of the 23rd. We should institute some sort of pool or something for this one. We're stating a firm 400,000 -- a good week, but not the best ever. After all, once you have five or six Lites, is Metallic Rose (like Noble Pink, but shiny) really necessary? We do like shiny things ....[Thanks, creamsugar!]

  • Adding some color to Game Boy emulation

Just as Technicolor added color to moving pictures, classic Game Boy gems await their colorized update. On the homebrew front, a new video from PSPHardwareHelp (after the cut) shows Super Mario Land running through an upcoming emulator for use on PSP. The notable difference between this and previous offerings is that this emulator converts black and white Game Boy classics into full color. It's certainly a remarkable achievement, one that Nintendo may want to capitalize on if they ever (wisely) bring Game Boy classics into the Wii Virtual Console.

  • Australia getting Ice Blue DS Lite [update 1]

Formerly exclusive to Japan, the Ice Blue DS Lite is coming to Australia at some unknown time, according to a Nintendo of Australia press announcement. Perhaps realizing that ice is quite rarely blue, the Australian unit will be called "Sky Blue." We can verify that yes, the sky is blue. There's no word on release date or price, but we'd expect it to be $A199.95 (US $165) like other DS's in Australia. You know, unless Nintendo of Australia is just a bunch of jerks. Oh, and speaking of jerks, there's still no sign of the lovely Ice/Sky Blue DS Lite being released in the U.S.Update: Go Nintendo is confirming that the handheld will be available come July 19th and retail for $199.95RRP. Also, it would seem this is going to be a one time limited release.[Via NeoGAF]

  • Xerox developing "natural language color editing"

    by
    Donald Melanson

    04.30.2007

Xerox's Geoffrey Woolfe seems to think he's found a way to make picking just the right color a bit easier, laying out his plans for so-called "natural language color editing" at the annual meeting of the Inter-Society Color Council (ISCC). While it's apparently still in the early stages, the system will supposedly let you adjust colors simply by describing them in natural langauge, using voice or typed commands like "make the sky a deeper blue" or "make the background carnation pink" -- the software then does all the rest of the work. Of course, Xerox isn't exactly giving any indication when that may happen, so you'll have to make do with the cumbersome point-and-click method of color-choosing we've somehow managed to get along with all these years for a little while longer.

  • Nintendo's Wiimote / Nunchucks to get colorful makeover?

    by

    04.06.2007

We'd highly suggest taking this one with a not-so-healthy does of salt, but according to "wholesale data" originating in the European market, colorful Wiimotes and Nunchucks could be on the horizon. If you'll recall, this isn't the first speculation that we've seen regarding the Big N and a rainbow selection, and unfortunately for everyone, none of those claims have yet to materialize. The data, however, suggests that Nintendo could be releasing Wiimotes / Nunchucks in silver, blue, and "pearl pink" flavors, and while pricing would likely be lower here in the States, Europeans would purportedly end up paying €40 (about $54) and €20 ($27), respectively. The completely unconfirmed distribution date is listed for June 29th, so unless Nintendo pulls one over on us and looses these early, we'll be waiting some time yet to see if this colorful hunch pans out.[Via Joystiq]

The washable-crayon-stylus hybrid thing seen here may still be a dream in our somewhat odd fanboy minds, but it is true that Crayola is bringing its unique brand of waxy, brittle pigment to the DS in electronic form. The company has made an agreement with publisher Crave to release a Crayola-themed DS game.Apparently, the game will be a minigame collection, with all of the minigames involving drawing and coloring with a wide selection of Crayola crayons. We're excited about this if only for the possibility that we may get to color a dinosaur. And because this way we won't lose 33 of our 64 colors within a week.

While there has been more than a few laptops that look pretty in pink, NEC is hoping to dish out a few blues with its latest in the LaVie lineup. The LaVie L LL550/HG sports a light blue coating on the lid that runs to the top of the keyboard, a 15.4-inch 1,280 x 800 resolution LCD, 1.8GHz AMD Sempron 3200+ processor, dual-layer DVD burner, 100GB hard drive, ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 graphics set, 1GB of RAM, and of course, Windows Vista Home Premium (and Office 2007) pre-installed. Additionally, you'll get 802.11a/b/g support, Ethernet, a flash card reader, and a dashing white keyboard that's sure to turn yellow before you even get it broke in good. Notably, the widescreen machine tips the scales at a heavier-than-expected 6.83-pounds, but those still digging the color scheme can pick this up now for ¥169,890 (or just under $1,400).[Via AkihabaraNews]

NDSCentral.com, which has long offered case-mod replacement shells for the DS and DS Lite, is getting ready to open up a new section for Wii case mods. Replacement shells for the Wiimote, nunchuck, and Wii unit itself are now available in black, red, yellow, blue, and translucent. Though the shells are covered in acrylic paint, as opposed to the high-gloss finish of the original units, the added color is just sure to go with your outfit. The shells for the accessories are quite cheap ($14.90 and $11.90 USD for the Wiimote and nunchuck, respectively), so if you're feeling iridescent, head on over.(Don't forget to pick up a tri-wing screwdriver to affix the mod!)[Thanks, Capt. • An Open Letter From Yellow to Apple

Apple has historically been - and to a certain point sill is - a pretty darn colorful company. True, Jobs and Ive seem to prefer to stick to grayscale for their flagship products (iMac, iPod, MacPro, MacBook/Pro, mini, etc), there is always a dash of color to be found somewhere in the Apple product lineup. All of the colors in the old logo (plus some extras) have graced the outside of at least one Apple device; all, that is, except for Yellow. As one would expect, Yellow isn't too thrilled that he's been left out of all of the fun, even if there were good reasons for doing so. As a way of expressing his distaste with the way things have been going, Yellow has published an open letter to Apple in which it makes arguments not only for itself being used in upcoming products, but a few of it's chromatic friends as well.
