  • PAX 07: Cosplay is why we bring cameras to conventions

This Peach cosplayer manages to look pretty elegant in the dress despite the backwards cap and dudeness. Seriously, I wanted to laugh at first, but-- at least within the context of PAX-- he's kind of pulling it off! I look a lot more awkward in this (and every) picture, and I'm totally wearing pants. Props to Casey the Peach cosplayer, and we hope he made it through the day without developing an aversion to cameras. After the break is an impressive Link cosplayer dressed for the icy depths of PAX Under the Sea.[Update: corrected Casey's name. Sorry-- I ran into too many Mikes, I think.]

  • Welcome to Cosplayer Crossing

GayGamer's Fruit Brute happened upon these three Animal Crossing cosplayers at Comic-Con, dressed as three of the franchise's most enduring and beloved characters: "Girl," Girl," and "Girl." He then persuaded them to allow him to take their picture, presumably by taking all of their borrowed glasses cases back to Hopper's house. It's the details, of course, that make these costumes work-- much like the actual game, all of the fun is in the items. The be-K.K. Slider-'d Girl is carrying one of Animal Crossing's ubiquitous Presents, and they actually presented Fruit Brute with an authentic Animal Crossing-style letter.

If you must dress up in costumes imitating those of video game characters, we would recommend mimicking a Phoenix Wright character. It is, of course, the natural progression from wearing a Phoenix Wright t-shirt. And if you're going to dress up in such a costume, why not do it for the benefit of the games' producer, Minae Matsukawa? Oh, right, because that would be really embarrassing. But that's us. Maybe you're bolder and more assertive than we are-- in fact, it's basically a given that you are. Since we're too meek to do it, you should go to the San Diego Comic-Con and compete in Capcom's official Ace Attorney Cosplay Contest, judged by Matsukawa. You should also-- and this is the most important part-- take lots of pictures for us.

  • Nintendo Short Cuts: Be the hero!

It must be hard, getting your friends together, making costumes, and getting props set up in under a week, if the story posted along with this video is true. Time constraints didn't prevent these Zelda fans from getting their send-up on film in time for the contest's deadline. The costuming looks pretty good, too, but we can't help but wonder if groups like this fight over who gets to be Link. Are they hiding bruises under those robes and tunics? We'll bet yes, but judging from the choreography of the fight scenes, it's likely no one got hurt too badly. Swing those swords like men, Zelda fans (or like angry women; we're all about equal opportunity swordsmanship around here)! But props on the setting, costumes, and music -- not bad for a rush job! Check out the video for yourself after the jump.

  • Nintendo Short Cuts entry is a thinly-veiled excuse for cosplay

Another entry for Nintendo's Short Cuts Showcase film contest has appeared on YouTube. You know, when we first read about this contest, we were expecting a lot of short films in different genres that cleverly integrated Nintendo elements into the storytelling-- conversations taking place during games of Mario Kart, a Clerks-style comedy set inside a game store, or something like that. But so far, the would-be Señor Spielbergos have all taken the direct, literal approach. This latest entry is the most direct yet-- a bunch of people dressed up like Zelda characters and adventured around on camera. It seems to follow Ocarina of Time, but then what Zelda fan works don't? Hey, even if they don't win, these kids were able to justify buying a Master Sword, so that's ... something.

Having broken out of the Mii channel's sterile confines, these characters were spotted at Canada's Anime North convention last May. One can only imagine what costumed horrors the blue-shirted Mii was subjected to that would leave his face in a permanent state of fright -- a heavyset guy with a ZZ Top beard dressed as Sailor Moon? Or a muscly Batman gyrating in a pair of speedos? Check past the post break for another photo of these two Miis hamming it up for the camera.

Awesome Ninja Gaiden cosplay from Tokyo Game Show 2006, as seen by kev:kev. • Bunnies don't like cosplay (or do they?)

We may not be diehard Xbox fans, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate it when they start dressing up like bunnies. A reader was kind enough to tip us off on this great competition on a German Xbox fansite that ended up with a couple of folks looking like extras from Rayman Raving Rabbids. We can totally get behind anything that produces pictures like these, especially when the Wiimote makes a cameo.[Thanks, Phillipp!]

Chances are, you probably won't find this upcoming fan-made film adaptation of Tekken to be as titilating as Maxim's Tekken girls photo shoot. This impressive-looking fan effort, entitled Tekken: King of Iron Fist, will feature some pretty accurate cosplaying, mixed with some action sequences. From the looks of things, this may be better than "official" Ewe Boll-produced film massacres.[Via Gamespot]

  • Fake Luigi invades Japanese Wii launch

During the Wii launch over the weekend at the Akiba Yodobashi, a Japanese store, an over-enthusiastic cosplayer was mistaken for an actual Nintendo employee. Dressed as a huge Luigi (pictured), which was excellently crafted if we say so, he was invited to take part in the festivities upon arrival, walking up to the stage and handing out the first Wii console to a happy customer. Shortly after, everyone realized this chap was not here on Nintendo's behalf and store employees gripped up the skinnier brother, ushering him out of the store. This was not before news crews had taken tons of footage featuring the cosplayer, which was featured on the local news. Someone took that broadcast and put it on You Tube, which we've embedded into the post past the jump.[Thanks Alex!]

No one knows where they come from, or what they want from us, but it seems a new breed of four-legged robots has invaded the streets of Japan, leaving nothing but death and destruction in its wake. Er, well, at least there was one of these things around Harajuku station in Tokyo the other day, and its passenger wasn't very talkative. Harajuku is a well known area for cosplay craziness, but this bot really takes the cake. Apparently the unit is agile enough to get up and down curbs easily, and has been seen navigating the crowds and traffic of Harajuku with two different operators. We're sure these invaders merely want peace. Either that, or our eternal servitude and unlimited access to our natural resources.

Oh no, PSP Fanboy is using sex to promote its site again! It's true... they say that sex sells, and the people behind Tekken know it. For a Maxim photo shoot, they had some models dress up (or down) as Tekken models. Taking some inspiration from Dead or Alive, the photographers then placed those models under running water. The following video won't disappoint you... unless you're at work and your boss realizes what kind of pevert you are. So, I'm giving this an EXTREMELY NOT SAFE FOR WORK notice. Enjoy![Update 2: New PSP-compatible video and newly hosted video after the cut. Sweet, huh? (Streaming video coming soon. Sorenson isn't working, drats!)]

Homebrew can be a little confusing and intimidating. So, I guess it's a little understandable when tons of confused people write comments in the blog, having absolutely no idea what the latest libtiff exploit does. Sure, they could've read the article, or even the helpful comments, but remember: I'm at your service. While I could explain again that the Hello World demo is just a demonstration of the potential of homebrew running on 2.0+ PSPs, I'll let this cosplaying pirate from PSP Hacking 101 explain it all. Arg, everybody likes pirates, matey! In other news, according to PSP Fanboy reader craig, a downgrader for 2.71 should be coming some time soon today or tomorrow. Check PSP Fanboy regularly to see the latest news![Via QJ]

  • Nintendo and DS in full force at Comic-Con

Nintendo is not without love for the comic geek, it would seem, as they plan to be out in full force at San Diego's Comic-Con 06 later on this month. While you would think they'd be on-hand with the Wii, attempting to get it as much exposure as possible before its launch later on this year, instead the company is looking to strengthen its already huge grip on gaming with the DS.That's right, no Wii and nothing but DS will be available to cosplaying comic fans in the southern California area during the ultimate show for comics. Those cosplaying as Nintendo characters will also get a chance to win prizes such as DS Lites, software, and other junk. Some of the titles available at Nintendo's booth are Mario Hoops: 3 on 3, Elite Beat Agents, Starfox Command, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. If you're a DS Fanboy reader attending the show and would like to send us some pictures, we guarantee you'll be *handsomely rewarded.*We're good at making people disappear.

  • Crazy Zelda cosplay

This collection of cosplay photos (roughly Zelda-themed, but with a liberal sprinkling of Mario) over at GAF runs the gamut from cute through to frightening. The capability of game fans to come up with inventive ways of making their favourite costumes is sometimes simply unbelievable. Many characters' costumes are lovingly designed by the original artists, and often overlooked in games, so it must be nice for the creators to see others appreciating their work like this. We hope the levels of "appreciation" don't scare the original designers as much as they scare us, though.[via 4cr]
