It's no wonder we're seeing Mama branch out -- Cooking Mama spawned a ridiculous amount of love, even if it didn't break any sales records. The shining face of Mama (or the image of her fiery eyes) is fast becoming a staple in the gamer crafting and cosplay communities. Mama's out of the kitchen, so we're dedicating this week's Show and Tell to her!Take the guided tour by starting right here, or be reckless and jump right into the gallery below.%Gallery-35505% Show and Tell is all about fan stuff, so long as it's Nintendo-related. With Halloween on the way, it seemed like a good time to feature some cosplay in The DS Life! As you can likely guess, the most popular costumed gamers we've posted about so far were the cosplaying Link duo (see gallery below), who took their inspiration from The Legend of Zelda's Four Swords spin-off.We've picked out another group who've dressed themselves up as the colorful Link clones, and while they might not seem as "sensual" as the blondes we featured before, we think they better capture Four Swords' bouyant, playful feel.%Gallery-17571%

  • Design a Dead Space costume, get a head!

Final Update: And the Dead Space Costume Contest winner is ...Update: That's it folks! The entry period is over. Thanks for participating! They say in space, no one can hear you scream. Luckily, here on earth, they'll hear you loud and clear if you win this cache of Dead Space goodies. But this is no ordinary Joyswag giveaway, folks. Oh no, you're gonna have to work for this one. You're finally being called upon to put those hard-earned hours in front of Project Runway to the test! Here's the deal: You design the winning costume, send us a JPEG, and we'll give you the head. In this case, 1 of only 8 fully modeled, handmade Dead Space helmets created for EA (embiggened view). You'll also receive the Dead Space game (PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 version -- your choice) plus game guide, Downfall (the animated prequel), the graphic novel, and art book (with 3-D glasses!). (Approximate value of prize is $600.) So bust out the scissors, sewing machine, gorilla glue, severed limbs, duct tape, and whatever else you can scrounge up ... and remember, take some risks! (Read: We don't want a thousand pictures of you all wrapped in tin foil.) Have fun!Update: To answer some of your questions, yes, the costume can be totally original (or based on the game's design) -- either way, it should complement the helmet. It's like Voltron: you form the body, we form the head. So, the costume must be fully realized (not a drawing, painting, proposal in comments, etc.). Consider your Halloween dilemma solved!

Click to embiggen No one does it like Japan. No one takes cosplay more seriously than them. To the Japanese it's an art form or even a form of sport, if you will. Cosplay takes massive dedication – there's getting into shape to look the part, and then talk about those hours upon hours applying wax in one's hair to get that exact patented look down right to the point of copyright infringement. It's all about going the extra mile, and Japan has perfected the Zen-like disciplined lifestyle of the cosplayer. Of course, we're not knocking down other countries and their costume mimicry attempts; Americans are getting there, we're sure you can agree, but it still pales in comparison. This is still very much Japan's homecourt. See for yourselves ... our gallery awaits.%Gallery-34303%

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Amazing_Peach_Zero_Suit_Samus_cosplay'; It's been a while since we last checked in on Swedish/Japanese student Jenni Källberg, a.k.a Queen of Nintendo cosplay, but here are her two most recent creations: Zero Suit Samus (actually revealed last month), and her take on Princess Peach. What is it that elevates Jenni's cosplay above others? Simple: the outfits are obviously beautifully made, the props are brilliant (we really need a giant Goomba now, though yes, we know it isn't actually that size), and there's a sense of humor about her work. Well, Raccoon Mario's sudden appearance made us laugh, anyway.Oh, and who hasn't encountered this problem? Just looking at that picture frustrates us!%Gallery-32071% Want moar cosplay? We've seen creative folks dressing up to pay tribute to all sorts of DS games, including Nintendogs, Zelda, Professor Layton, Advance Wars, The World Ends With You, and even, um, Brain Training.

It's (sort of nearing) that time of year again, when cosplayers can pretend to be relatively normal people. Halloween brings with it the Atlus-O-Weenie costume contest! The beloved niche game developer/publisher wants you to dress up like an Atlus character for a chance at the fabulous prizes pictured above, including swag like signed Trauma Center, Persona 4 and Growlanser memorabilia, a copy of Dokapon Kingdom, and a "Large hardback promotional poster of an Atlus title of your choice."You'll be able to submit pictures from October 1 through November 3. Last year, the entries were entirely Persona-related. Surely a Wii Fanboy reader can buck the trend with, say, a Bonk or a Willy the Rockin' Kat!

In last week's edition of Show and Tell, we saw a little Zelda cosplay, and you know what? We see Zelda cosplay all the time. Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy -- while these series make for some great cosplay opportunities, frankly, they get old. The DS has a library rife with interesting characters who also happen to be from great games, and we want to see people dressing up like them. To that end, we scoured the 'net to find a few cosplay pics inspired by some of the best handheld games we've ever played. • Midna, Rosalina expertly cosplayed by Nintendo convert

Did you know that some people really like Nintendo games? It's true! Some people express their fandom by writing about Target Terror price drops, while others choose to imitate game characters at anime festivals. The Tanooki interviewed one such cosplayer, Andrea Zampella, and found that her Nintendo devotion is a new development! As it turns out, she grew up Segaist. It wasn't until Sonic the Hedgehog games began to show up on the GameCube that Andrea began to appreciate Nintendo consoles. Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games was the catalyst for her complete conversion, marking the end of the Sonic/Mario rivalry. "Plus," she said, "Super Mario Galaxy was the bomb, and so was Rosalina!"Check after the break for a picture of Andrea as Rosalina. More images of both the Rosalina and Midna costumes can be found at The Tanooki, along with the full interview.

  • The Daily Grind: Would your dress up as your MMO character?

    07.02.2008

As much as many of us probably have an invested amount of time and love in our in-game avatars, would any of you dress up as them? We don't mean dress up poorly, unless that's just your thing. We mean would you dress up as your avatar on a professional level? The whole nine yards with a custom tailored costume sparring no infinitesimal detail. If the answer is no, then we have to wonder what it would take for you to do such an unthinkable thing: Money, cookies, maybe death threats? This is all especially relevant due to the fact that Massively will be running the MMORPG costume contest this year at Dragon*Con. While we're on the topic of that, we should mention that there is an extreme lack of Warhammer Online costumes out there, so bring the waaagh! We certainly hope that some of you out there aren't too opposed to dressing up and puttin' da Gork in it!

Cosplayers are perpetual purveyors of entertainment. Die-hard fans never miss a chance to dress up, while some fans would rather die. Some do it so well that everyone becomes a fan, if only for a moment. Anyone grossly offended by the glory of cosplay should look away now (we're kidding, keep reading), as we present the new Guiness World Record for "Most Video Game Costumes in One Place."It is estimated over 600 fans showed up to A-Kon 2008 dressed in video game attire, easily besting the previous "record" of 80 Marios. Characters from all walks of Nintendo life were found at A-Kon, and we've gathered a few of the best to check out after the break. Cosplay done right looks rad.

Just to recap, let's see what has been announced: Fan art contest Machinima contest Actual gameplay contests, in Warcraft III, Starcraft, and WoW Hands-on play of Starcraft II and Wrath of the Lich King ...and now a costume contest. The fourth annual WWI will be held in Paris, on June 28th and 29th. • WiiMan is a human Wiimote

    by

    04.16.2008

While we're not adverse to posting completely kickass examples of cosplay, sometimes the hobby makes us speechless for all the wrong reasons. Take, for example, WiiMan -- the white fabric-clad manboy, with a Wiimote decal on the front of his costume. Oh, and let's not forget the cape. One cool thing about Wiiman, though, is that the Wiimote on his costume is wired to work like an actual Wiimote. Of course, that's one of those things that sounds better in theory than in practice, because feeling up some guy in a superhero costume (or watching him feel up himself) while playing Wii is something we tend to avoid.Still, we admire WiiMan's dedication. It's not everyday you see a man dressed as a functioning Wiimote, amirite?(Note: We know some circles won't consider this as official cosplay, but it's close enough for our standards.)[Via Gemaga]
